Yesterday my course was doing a lot of maintenance getting ready for winter. Back nine was completely closed. The front was open to play but only the most forward tee boxes and the crew put all three tee markers together (blue, white, and red). My buddy and I played the front twice and the course plays really short from up there but who cares as winter is going to be here soon, good to just be playing. We normally play blue 69.7/129. Talking to my friend today at the range he mentioned that yesterday was his best score differential wise all season. He posted his score from the blue tees. I said no that he should have used the forward tees (65/107) for yesterday as we were playing an almost 600 yard shorter course. He was befuddled as to why I thought that way. He said if the blue tees were up there he was playing the blue tees and had no control over how or where the course decided to put the blues. Out of curiosity, who is right?

LOL. You are.  The course is rated not by the color of the marker but by the yardage of the marker.

That’s what I thought but I wasn’t 100% sure. Mostly not sure because between the middle and back tee boxes the white/blue tees could be moved as much as 80-90 yards depending on where they were placed. I’ve never given it any thought before today.

LOL ouch! Your buddy effectively posted a penalty score on himself.

You were right, and his index is going to hurt if he is playing any net games. Ouch!

He shot a 97 and I have no idea what that translates to differential wise but his cap floats around 25 so not sure how much that will drop it. And he only plays for fun or the occasional soda not in any events.

Shouldn't post it, but course staff should have removed the back tees as well.

Your mate who posted did he post 2x9 hole scores?

He only hurt himself.

Doesn’t play in club matches or any tournaments ever. Only started playing at 55 during pandemic. Handicap is included in membership so he uses it as a way to see if he’s improving. He had absolutely no malice of intent and truly had no idea what he was doing wasn’t proper. I only asked the question because I could understand how he viewed it…we normally play blue tees no matter where they are placed and there is a ton of space on the tee boxes to move them back or forward. That day they just happened to be way up.

While I agree with you I gotta ask….how many tees have to be moved up for you to use a different tee for posting than what you played?

Let’s say you’re playing blues but a few tees are up.  Do you post as up tees?  I would think one tee you certainly post as a blue score. But 5? 10?

A month or so back, I faced a similar condition.  The course had all tee blocks on the gold ole man tees, about 5700yds, which is easy.  I normally play the Blue tees.  However, afterward posted my score to the Gold tee yardage.  The round was made fun using only irons.

Posting to the Blue tees would be incorrect.  Right or wrong???

From the Handicap Manual:

The front of a teeing area, as defined in the Rules of Golf, should not be placed more than 10 yards (10 metres) in front of, or behind, the relevant permanent distance marker on each hole. Overall, the golf course should not be shortened (or lengthened) by more than 100 yards (100 metres) from its measured length, to ensure accurate application of the Course Rating and Slope Rating in the calculation of players’ Score Differentials.

This was in essence our exact situation. I posted from the forward tees and courtesy of @rogolf it appears we made the right decision.

As posted by ROGOLF, if enough of the tees are moved up, or back, to create more than 100 yards of length in difference from the tees your posting on, THEN you’d look to see if you should post from a different set.

But if they move one tee up 20 yards on a par 3, then back 15 yards on a par 5, that’s only a net of 5 yards different from the OG tee markers.

Many times when I see our regular (white) tees in different positions on a day, I would pace them from the permanent white markers, noting the shorter and longer ( + or -).  If the total was greater or less than 100 yards, I would remind the GM of the handicap system requirements so he could pass the message to the greens staff.

I believe @ThinkingPlus gave you the laughing emoji because not all grounds crew can handle that capably.  I asked our greenkeeper if you could have a little variety with the tee boxes but keep the total yardage about right. Like move one back 20 yards and move a couple up 10 yards to balance.

He just replied….”they’re not that smart”.😏

edit to add…..she can correct me if I’m wrong.

That is correct. Most ground crews can't spell golf. You are way ahead of the game if you can get tee markers put back on the tee boxes after mowing. They get a gold star if the tee markers are straight across from each other. Placing the markers in such a way they will be compliant with WHS requirements is about 3 bridges too far. It just isn't going to happen except possibly places that pay a good wage for grounds staff and can hire higher quality folks.

Our super is so obsessed with “score card yardage” that everyday, if it’s a back pin, tees are up. Front pin, tees are back. And since the rotation stays the same there is zero variation. In our Wednesday night league, the par threes play the same yardage every single week.

I’ve pleaded with them to change it up once in awhile. Move one to the white box (one up) and the other to the black (back). Still holding to that sacred scorecard yardage, but maybe get to hit a different club once in a while.

Yeah, I hate hate hate that “if the tee is up the pin is back etc” nonsense that some suggest. Virtually every hole would play the same yardage every day.

That is exactly how it is.

I played one of my customary 3 hole rounds last night (#’s 8,9, &11, I’m a bouncer late in the day. Find an opening!). Anyway. Pulled up to #9 tee, saw the box in the middle. Didn’t even have to go up and look for the flag. Knew where it would be and what club I needed.

We played a small men’s league event a couple weeks ago and played for the white tees. Man it was fun hitting some different clubs.

I just don’t get it. I’ve been here almost five years now and it drives me nuts. I can’t imagine the guys who have been playing it for as long as the guy as been there.
