2024 Season Opener - The Sentry at Kapalua **NO LIVery Tomfoolery**

You gotta be long to win this one. I can't recall a past winner who wasn't a top 10 in driving.

So guys like Morikawa, Harman, Kim - all deselected. Same with Homa and probably Im.

I'm looking at Scheffler and Hovland. Shocking I know. Love Aberg, but he's never beaten competition like this. Too young.

I think Finau's odds are the best value in the field bc he crushes it off the tee and he's actually a good putter.

Cantlay and Fitz are both sneaky long, so who knows, but Fitz isn't as good an approach player as someone like Scheffler who bores you to death with birdie looks.

I want to pick Hovland, but there's a reason Scheffler is favored.

Friday night before, the field is finalized.  Rory is the only qualifier who declined.

Wife and I heading to Napa/Sonoma tomorrow for our niece's 21st b-day so I added a side trip to Maui on Southwest ($129 each way and wife flies for free on my companion pass).  We get to Maui on THUR, haven't booked lodging yet, waiting as airbnb and booking.com rates drop.  Also waiting for golf tickets to get cheaper on Stubhub.  Any tips while we're there?

Normally I would...but with the fire in Lahaina, I'm not sure how everything has changed on West Maui.   The rest of the Island I'd imagine is a lot less impacted.

Also, $150-200 for a gallery pass is nuts.   There are dozens of things I'd rather do on Maui for that price, and even more that cost nothing!

I normally would say I like Hideki in the Hawaii events - but given his string of aches and pains, I doubt this is a good start for him.

Maybe at the Sony Open, if he truly has recovered from all his neck, back, etc injuries.

At least the field this week is "watchable" for a PGA event that's been "diluted" relative to past years.

Morikawa should have won last year but he choked it away on the back 9.  Both Homa and Kim finished top 5

Cam Smith and Harris English are 2 recent winners and both are below average in driving distance.

This is a birdie fest course, whoever has a hot putter can win.

I guess you're not wrong. I wouldn't call Cam short, but between English and Reed and 2012 Zach and Stricker, I guess it's possible to be less long and win.

I  still think it's a real advantage though.

Yeah it's largely dependant on the wind. If benign conditions, this course is a joke.

The Sentry is the 2024 season’s first Signature Event and includes PGA TOUR winners from the previous calendar year as well as the top 50 players from the 2022-23 FedExCup Points List through the TOUR Championship (i.e., those who qualify for the BMW Championship, the second FedExCup Playoffs event).

The PGA TOUR who's who will be there minus the tourament's defending champion.

Purse is $20m with 700 FedEx Cup points up for grabs.

Viewing will be on NBC, Peacock, ESPN+ and Golf Channel in no specific order.  Good luck finding your watching access.

Who's your favorite to take this one?  Picking Rory McIlroy myself.

Thanks for the post and the heads up! It’s a stacked opener. Should be a great watch.

Spieth?  JT?  Anyone from Texas.

Not sure I'd put JT on any putting list, also he's not in the field. Scottie should be up there on striking alone, needs to be above average on the greens. I'd expect Xander to contend as well.
