I agree that the list remains the same and predictable. I've always preferred the annual evaluations in Golf Magazine, but they changed somewhat last year. I'll be interested to see what they do this year, given the recent overhaul of the magazine.

I am sure that it's just coincidence that the companies that spend the most on marketing and advertising in say certain golf related publications seem to get the best reviews on the Hot List.

For the majority of people in this forum this list means nothing anyways...however for the average golfer who might have received subscription to this from the weird aunt - I'm sure this list helps move more product than other reviews, etc. Seems like people would catch on at some point though, when they realize that Golf Digest seems to think Taylormade has never not put out the best club of the year in every category

It's basically a catalogue of equipment these days... the "hot list" has no data behind it other than looking at marketing, so inevitably the big names win all the awards. You have to look at unbiased testing to get a real idea. The site that cannot be named, but involve "golf espionage" is great for that. Some youtubers are really good too, but even some of them seem biased.

 

I like Shiels reviews, he gives great data, but he likes click bait titles and seems a bit brand biased at times. TXG makes great review videos, possibly the best.

 

For me, I still peak at the hot list, it gives me a quick overview of what's out, but I put zero credit in their awards.

The fundamental flaw on this list is that it factors in demand as heavily as it does performance. In most cases the difference between a club getting gold or silver is due solely to the "demand" factor being low.

It should just be retitled to the Best Seller list. It’s why most years TM’s cheaper driver always rates better than their flagship model. And why clubs like Wishon or KZG get silver or honorable mentions.

I agree, but it is easy to remake the list yourself by removing the demand portion. I seriously have never paid any mind to it. I look to the three other categories, which have historically been spot on.

 

This is the biggest flaw with this list But, also the easiest to remove the b.s. Not directed at you, but why does everyone get bent out of shape over something that could easily be valuable in the three classes that matter?

Would be so much better if it was a stat list. So at the end of the year it had how many units of each driver was sold, iron set etc. Everything claims #1 on tour but would love to know what #1 in the real world is.
