Stricter Dress Code Coming For LPGA

Recommended Posts

It's in the interest of "growing the game" and appealing to the younger generation to get into golf ....... seems to me a thinly veiled puritanical lashing out by the powers that be, who are all probably over the age of 50 ... what or who is this in reaction to? that'd be interesting to know .. there's been nothing in the public domain..

Hey...I'm well over 50 and approve of the current rules for LPGA fashion.

I agree. I would like to see a more professional type of dress code, as the men have.

Keep in mind what constitutes as "professional" is not written in stone, it changes with time.

Once upon a time IBM was the gold standard of American tech companies. It had a strict dress code for its engineers, who must wear shirts and ties. Then came some hippies in the silicon valley, who ditched those codes.

These days, some of the brightest minds in the world go to their offices every day at Google, Apple, Facebook, in their flip flops and shorts.

John T. Malloy..."Dress for Success." As a young person in the Bell System 40 years ago, you could wear Navy or Grey suits, white shirts and red/blue ties. People were sent home for going outside the dress code.

Keep in mind professional and acceptable have different meanings too. While it certainly is progressive and cool that modern workplaces find it acceptable for employees to dress casual that does not make it professional.

Lots of speculation going in the absence of real information so I might as well add to the total. What if this is a pre-emptive strike against the golf clothing folks sponsoring LPGA players? The tour is younger than ever. Maybe setting standards is a way of protecting young players from exploitation and might prevent the LPGA from becoming the target of litigation somewhere down the line. Probably just paranoia on my part with this speculation, but crazier things have happened.

I feel like most of this is directed at Michelle Wie and even though I feel like she is dressed more for the gym lately than the golf course, it's going to be hard to enforce some of this stuff. If skirts are a problem, players will just wear extremely short and form fitting shorts. I remember I saw Anna Rawson wearing spandex workout shorts on the golf course one time, haha. I doubt the LPGA is killing it with viewership. They should be focused on other things to help grow the tour.

Typical reaction on golfwrx.

Everyone acts like the people who make these kind of decisions haven't taken the time to adequately think the issue through.

Everyone acts like they are smarter than the people who get paid to make these kinds of decisions.

LOL - Rather common occurrence on Golfwrx. Opinionated experts with no experience.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that the LPGA plays a lot of events in "conservative" countries. Clothing that barely raises an eyebrow in the U.S. may be a bigger issue in Thailand, Malaysia, China, or Singapore. You can't really have an asterisk on the current dress code that says try to not show your butt in the following countries... so you just tighten it up overall.

If there's going to be a change to a tour's dress code, I'd rather the PGA Tour passed a "Dustin Johnson must wear a cup" rule.

Well when it comes to the House and the Senate they probably are.

Here's my take: a slight course correction is not the end of the world. In the tournament prior to the US Open, Jaye Marie Green was wearing what appeared to be to be volleyball shorts and a tee shirt. Amy Yang wears yoga pants/ tights. The length of some of the player's shorts is, TBH, really short. Apparently things have loosened up at the pro-am parties also.

LPGA wants to keep a good thing going. Young girls will push it (most dads will tell you this:) unless they get a reality check. So the LPGA felt it was time to tighten it up. I have no problem with it. They have a tour board and player input governance model.

Amy Yang? Seriously? She wears the same stretchy capris as Brooke. If they're worried about them, they're really stretching it.

They don't look the same. One is below the calf and one is above the calf. One is skin tight and the other is loose fitting.

I think looking/dressing professional and classy in any profession is important however that statement quite poorly written. I'm not somebody who really ever watches the LPGA but from what I've seen there isn't an issue. I would prefer if Michelle Wie kept the chokers for the bedroom but to each their own I guess.....

I'm certain the LPGA didn't want this to get out, and I'm also certain they aren't trying to get people to simply cover up more. It's less nefarious than some people want to believe, but I understand people reading it that way.

That said, this is the same organization that benefited greatly, and was quite happy, when Jan Stephenson took that photo in the bath tub. Hard not to see this as a little hypocritical.

They ain't complaining about Lexi Thompson showing part of her bazoongas off on a magazine cover. "But at pro-am dinners and on the course this is about being professional ladies". Puh-leeze.

On GC this morning, they were discussing this. Sounds like the decision was spurred by what was being worn on the Symetra Tour, particularly by the younger players "seeking Instagram fame".

I think golf viewership on both the LPGA and PGA is driven by what the leaderboard looks like. "Popular" players on both tours are going to garner more viewers. Popular can be golf game, appearance, controversy etc. My guess is the women's U.S. Open and Men's John Deere leaderboards don't appear to have any big draws for the weekend. Michelle Wie has always pushed the limits apparel wise, but more recently she has been interesting to watch because of the stances she uses to hit her shots. I can't imagine how she is able to move in the morning after playing a round. Can't imagine the pain she must have in her hips, neck, ankles...

Just have a standard uniform for the LPGA almost like the PGA has. Ban shorts, the PGA can't wear them. Have them all dress like Brooke Henderson..

Obviously the person most often on camera that has pushed the envelope is Michelle with very short skorts and minimal tops. Obviously someone has said something to her as the last couple of times she has been wearing those ridiculous looking sleeves that look like someone chopped the top off a long sleeved tee shirt. Must have to do this as Nike must not have any other outfits that comply for her to wear..

^ Then feminists will complain because women should be able to "express" (?) themselves via wearing a skort, etc. Trying to justify something a women does "because that's how the men do it" is asking for trouble.

Yesterday at the Open, Lexi was one of the very few ones even wearing a skort. Almost all the ladies had full pants on. Today and tomorrow will be different I assume because it's going to be fairly humid and in the 80s. Caddies can wear shorts in the PGA.... It's honestly just an antiquated rule that's purely because of tradition. Go out on a hot summer day at almost any club, private or public and I'd like 9/10 guys have shorts on. Shorts are appropriate golfing attire, because if they weren't they wouldn't be allowed on regular golf courses.

What is the LPGA afraid of - with how the ladies are currently dressing...or might dress in the future? They're afraid of something - but what?

Maybe so, but they are still the ones making decisions on your work. I have employees that try and convenience me they are right... yet, NOT one of them has ever put their financial butts on the line to test their beliefs, much less a large payroll. They want me fund their learning, so if it turns out a loser, I lose, not them. :beach:

That's the thing probably 98% of the outfits worn are acceptable under this dress code. It's the few pushing the envelope. Probably just don't want any Paige Spiranac's on the course.
