I sure did butcher this question from the get go!!! Shouldn't have typed it out on my phone.

I wasn't really counting an xtra set of clubs as a "back up" set even though I guess it technically is. For example...someone likes their M2 driver so well that they go buy the exact same driver as a back up! As well as the same iron set, wedges, putter etc.

I have a back-up driver and 3-wood, exact specs of my gamers, TEE E8 Beta and CB Pro Limited Edition, respectively.

I'm a 4 hdcp and my average drive prior to my TEE was 260 yds. This after going through numerous drivers over the years, but one day while killing some time at the PGA SS, I grabbed an E8 off the rack and was hitting it 270 with a few at 275. Went to Callaway, Titleist, and TM to see if I was just "on" that day, but I was back to 260 yds. Purchased the E9 on the spot and never looked back. Fast forward 12 months, they were on sale for $169, so couldn't resist the opportunity of having a back-up at that price. Once it arrived at my door step, I immediately went to the range in hopes my gamer wasn't a unicorn, and it wasn't, I hit it just as far.

My 3-wood is a similiar story, as in it was the longest/straightest 3-wood I have ever hit, until the face cracked. Contacted TE, but they no longer made the CB Pro Limited Edition and didn't have any in stock. Scoured e-bay and finally found one to the exact specs/shaft of my gamer. Once again, took it to the range right after delivery, and the world was right again. Not wanting to take another chance of a cracked face, I kept searching for a back-up. I finally found a brand new one online, so I thought. After a few weeks of not hearing anything, I contacted the vendor for status. They said it's on order with TE, but it's the F2 version as they no longer make the original. Duh, I knew that and your website specifically showed the original with the Speeder 757. I asked for a refund, but the vendor asked me to give them another chance to find one. Somehow TE was able to locate one and built it to my original specs. Again, took it the range agaist my replacement gamer I got off e-bay, and all is good.

Not sure what it is about the TE setups, but they fit my swing to a T, or should I say TEE :>)

Not sure how you could have played golf for a living and not had a second set of clubs but stranger things I guess...

I've always had at least one set of backups. They're always an identical set so they are still the ones I play and practice with. Gear wears out, gets broken, gets lost, needs repairs and gets stolen. It would be like making a living with your car and driving around without a spare tire. To each his own. :-)

I have plenty of clubs. Iron sets, drivers, putters, wedges etc. I could prob throw sets together in 15 minutes. Ive given away more clubs than ive kept. I'm talking about going out and buying a club strictly as a back up club!

I should have made that clear in my first post.

Well if I'm going to have a backup set, it's going to be the exact same set. Otherwise it's not a backup set, it's just another set.

If my living is on the line, and I need to go to the back upset then it and needs to be a seamless transition. I can tell you that has happened more than once.

My back up sets (yes, sets), it's one in FL at my sister's house of all stuff bought used, at, what I thought at that moment, decently low priced & stuff that I had previously bought & used & moved to something else, so that I wouldn't have to be flying w/a set back & forth every time I went to visit her. The 2nd set is just stuff that used to be in my "gamer" bag & have gotten something else to replace it/them... this 2nd set is at home, to be used for when I get family/friends when they visit me.

What does that make me?] I currently have 5 full sets of recent clubs. Two I intend to sell, one for visitors, and two I game regularly

I think it makes you a person who has two sets too many.

Rarely such a thing is ever needed......if you have 2 residencies in different states possibly.......main reason is people like to buy stuff, and this is how they justify another set of clubs, lol

Have never once since i been playing have had a need for "backup" set....

I buy alot of stuff as well.....I settled for one set of irons, have multiple putters, wedges, drivers......

I am way past justifications, i just buy it

New rule from the USGA next year: A player shall only own 14 clubs at a time. If a player damages a club during play, he must be refitted, then wait 4-6 weeks for the replacement club to arrive.

I have a backup set at my parents' house in FL. I bought the set off eBay and they're old and used so they're actually cheaper then checking into luggage every time I visit. I can't stand using the clunky rental sets that are typically available.

ETA: they're duplicates of my recently benched primary clubs.

I've worked really hard to avoid having complete backup sets, on purpose. Space is a factor as would be my indecision on which set to play....unless of course it was a complete duplicate of the main set.

I'm more of an "option" guy vs a backup set. When I say option I'm referring to having two 3 woods to pick based on course condition as well as a few other clubs. Plus, living in Canada we don't play a huge amount during the summer. I rarely fly with my clubs either. Nobody is going to break into my igloo during the winter to grab my golf gear so I settle on one set.

Hockey sticks; now that's a different story. I've broken my main total one this year as well as the backup. I may need to adopt a 3-stick strategy soon.

I like having different sets, I keep one in my Florida condo, one in my Myrle beach condo, one set in my car, one set in my local club and a bunch in my house. They are all fitted and I like to rotate them in and out based on course conditions and what I feel like playing that day.

I think I have four full sets now and getting fit for T-MB irons as the fifth one

- s55's .. use this most of the time

- x-proto blades

- j15 mb's

- rapture J's

The woods are not identical but very very close to each other

One goes to my brother's house in Myrtle Beach and spends the winter

The sad part is I have 30 odd 3 and 4 woods and about the same in wedges. Putters, haven't caught the bug yet ... only about 12

Trust and paranoia. We trust clubs we’ve gamed for a while but are always “looking” for more, better, newer, longer, straighter. New clubs might disappoint so we keep sets in reserve just in case. I “only” have five sets of irons but soon I will thin the herd to two. Keep reducing offset (latest Ping S55 are doing the trick).

I can always understand having "options" lying around but I've also always questioned why so many people seem to have an identical "back up bag". Unless you like to leave your bag at the bag drop while you have a few rounds with your buddies, I don't understand the need for a copy and paste set of clubs.

If you travel someplace often enough, it's more convenient and cheaper to leave a back up set at the location than lugging it to the airport and paying to check it back and forth.

I also keep multiple backups of my favorite driver because they don't make it anymore and I freaking love it. Costs generally less than 50 bucks at the 2nd hand golf shop i frequent or eBay. I keep backups of it just in case something happens to the clubhead... bad paint chip, these little elements on the bottom have fallen out, cracked clubface, etc. I just like knowing I have an exact replacement if something were to happen

more like fall back set. Some convince themselves, Hey I'm a 15 capper and this week I played like a single digit I think I'll buy some blades but I'll keep my G I irons for a fall back set in case......

This is 100% exactly what I was trying to say. I get the collectors and the people that have 2 or 3 homes. I even understand the junkies that are always looking for the latest and greatest. I just didn't understand the guy that bought my epic and didn't even want to try 2nd it was going to be strictly a "back-up" club.

I have two other sets of clubs. One set for me, in-case my current set is stolen. The other set with standard "S" shafts for guests that may want to play when in town.
