Brands You Won't Play

Taylormade, Callaway, Nike, Cobra, Cleveland, probably some more I’m forgetting.

Not sure why, I just really dislike some brands for arguably no good reason. And I love others. I’m a Titleist fanboy for sure. I don’t game a bag full of their stuff but it’s the only brand where I’d be absolutely happy to do so. Also like Ping, Mizuno, and Bridgestone. Add in any small boutique type shop and those are the only clubs I really consider.

Alright everyone!

We all know if you're a true WRX'er, you have a favorite brand. Your "ride or die" brand. Maybe it was because of a club you had years ago. Maybe it's because they made something you didn't own but always sought after. Maybe it's their tech or just appearance.

Now let's talk about about those OTHER brands...the brands you just don't even look at when you're online or in a shop. The brand that even if they threw a sponsorship, you'd say "ehhhh lemme think about that...". I know it's hard to not get too emotional but let's try to keep this nice and friendly.

Personally, I'm not a fan of Cobra. All started back with the 440sz. Not sure why I didn't like it and why I'm not a fan of their stuff but just doesn't rev my engine. Another brand would be Ogio. It all started when they came out with those Woode bags. I was caddying for a year when those came out. So many golfers at my course got them!!! The thought process behind putting the woods in that way just made no sense to me. Plus some golfers put their woods in the side slots as they designed the bag for but then others didn't follow that way. Not to mention, the straps were garbage and that bag was always heavy even empty.

Lemme know what brand you aren't a fan of and the reasons why you're not a fan of them!

The only real brand I have an aversion to is Callaway due to having one of their irons break after using them twice.

Recently, I have grown on Ping offerings and am drifting away from Taylormade. I find it best to find the best brands for certain clubs. For me it goes like this:

Driver/Fairway Woods - Ping G400 range is amazing (replaced all taylormad equipment from the last two years)

Irons - Big fan of Mizuno. No matter what set you get it is quality and no up charge for shafts and grips

Wedges - Titleist and Mizuno

Putters - Right now, love the taylormade spider but Odyssey putters are usually always solid and not overpriced (i know, its callaway)

Being in the marketing field this is a very fascinating thread as I definitely have profiles for all the brands in the market

PING, feel like they try really hard to make their clubs look "different" and hate the way they look (specifically their irons and current driver)

TM M4 3 wood

, Mizuno wasn’t as friendly to lefties as it is now, Nike didn’t like the look. Yonex wasn’t easy to find in our parts. Other than that I’ve played about every brand that you can buy easily.

Ping does try really hard to make their clubs look different, thatʻs part of the reason theyʻre popular, besides performance.

I have never considered using anything made by Mizuno or Nike over the years, Nike because their Nike and Mizuno because one of my old baseball coaches was always giving me grief because i gamed Rawlings gloves instead.

Now i really like the looks of the Nike Vapor Fly line but canʻt do the swoosh.

Last thing.... if an extra few thousand $$$ landed in my lap iʻd definately check out the PXG lineup and i bet half the guys on here clowning them would too. j m o

It used to always be TaylorMade but they would always seem to find a way into my bag and is one of my favorite clubs. I only played Cleveland driver, wedges and hybrids never their irons as I have no desire to go with Cleveland now, not sure why. I've played Cobra in the past and liked in the past before they started going with all the fancy color badges so Cobra is another brand I don't bother checking out anymore. I think its because out of those 2 brands I would not play a full set from driver to putter as Im not sure if either make putters anymore.

Originally I would never try anything Taylormade, with their white crowns and 100+ gimmick driver settings. However, more recently I have become more fond of their wood and iron offerings with their more subtle and subdued looks. Nowadays, Cobra's brash colour schemes and vibrant looks upset my inner purest and I pray that the S9-1 Pro and Pro CB/MB days return to Cobra so I can put some of their equipment back in the bag!

I was the exact same for a long time about Mizuno as well! Played baseball growing up and thought it was weird Mizuno made golf clubs for awhile.

I had a poor CS experience with Taylormade with my M1 440, so at least for a while Taylormade is on my will not buy or consider list. If I did not struggle with 3 wood so horribly, the R15 would get replaced as well.

Was it a warranty replacement issue? My buddy is 3 weeks out from sending his in to get it replaced. Sucks to be without your driver that long in the middle of the season. At this point, he plans on trading it in as soon as it comes back. Vows to not play another TM club.

I had a TM M1 440 have to go in as I cracked the face on it earlier this year. Knowing the turnaround time could get long I picked up a deal on a Ping G30 LST to play while it was away. I end up selling the 440 when it come back as I liked the G30 LST better. LOL

I just cannot believe that TM will not work with customers directly like Callaway does. I have had to have a few warranty claims with Callaway in the past and they have always been willing to send me a replacement first (after taking my CC info for collateral). Callaway is king in customer service in my book. And, as such, I tend to stick with them when it comes to clubs that have the biggest potential for failure (driver and fairways). In this day and age of maxing distance, failures are just going to happen, it's almost impossible to avoid. How you handle them speaks strongly about how much a company values it's customer base.

I'll play any brand. I guess the only brand that I'm usually turned off by quickly is Callaway. Never have liked the looks of their irons nor woods at address, at least those that I have picked up. Assuming performance and price are similar amongst clubs I'm comparing, I guess I lean towards Titleist or PING (now that Nike is dead).

Every time I get fit for a new club I try anything from any brand and I try hard not to be biased. The last few times I've bought clubs the only brands I like the feel of enough to buy are Cobra and Titleist (and since Cobra is usually better priced, that tends to be my go to). I prefer steering clear of Callaway and Taylormade because they just pump out product so fast, having multiple new club lines a year makes you wonder how much the technology is really improving or how much they are just trying to print money. I've played Callaway irons before and they were okay but felt no-where near as nice as my Cobra's do. I tried the Taylormade M2 driver and M3 irons recently and while the irons impressed me neither product felt good enough to buy. I have nothing against Ping as well but I've never hit any Ping product that impressed me even in the slightest. I think Ping and Taylormade are probably the ones I try to avoid the most but if they ever prove me wrong in the fitting process I'd give em a run.
