Brands You Won't Play

Least favorite brand would be Callaway. I've never liked the way their woods look or their cavity back irons. They make really good blades and wedges though, but their marketing campaign the last few years has been somewhat of a turnoff. To each their own.

I'll never say never, growing up on components and being a serious ho, OEM,s were never much in the cards, but.they have crept in the bag-

P- yes 12 Sandy

So this opens things up a bit. I never see myself playing pxg, Parsons irritates me and the price tag, which is more limiting than the former. And then there is JDM, nice and pretty and all but no thx, plus I'm not into tiny blades, and if I want soft/forged, Golfworks will do me just fine. Next, friggin Scotty, gawd I wanna throw up. Lol at the cost for a silly headcover! Overriding theme is pricetag, but then there is the exclusivity of certain brands that rubs me the wrong way, but I'll never say never.

I try to keep an open mind, and will try things even from companies I don't like, but the companies I tend to shy away from are:

TaylorMade- make great woods, and a great golf ball, but most everything else is blah. And as a golf course/pro shop operator, they burnt me numerous times long ago on the insane product cycling and leaving me holding $$$ in inventory that was then "outdated". I have come around and do exclusively play the TPx ball, even though it's the only ball I actually have to pay for.

Nike- aside from shoes, I just can't get with anything else they've tried in golf. Apparel is too out there, and they never knew how to make/sell clubs that appealed to the majority of buyers

Titleist- decent ball, but way overpriced for what it is. Don't like their woods performance, even though I do like the look. Don't like the irons. Some of the worst feeling forgings I've ever hit.

S. Cameron-ok putters, just can't stand the hype. Many artisan makers make putters at least as well, if not better than Cameron.

PXG for me...a company run by a narcissistic billionaire that peddles overpriced clubs.

Titleist. Clubs, balls, won't touch them.

Completely baffled by the whole thing. Find them to be smoke and mirrors, a follower that has somehow marketed themselves enough to obscure that for some/many. Almost a cult.

For years, I wouldn't touch a TaylorMade stick. Wasn't impressed by the moveable weight thing when it appeared, and so on. Then I tried an R11S at a demo day. And one owned by a friend. Not bad. But what really struck me was the plug-n-play aspect to shaft swapping. The ability to control face angle, for those who required something outside the norm.

*And* I realized the MWT I'd largely ignored could be used to create my preferred swingweight at shorter than offered club lengths, without adding copious amounts of lead tape.

So I'll use TM these days. SuperDeep, SLDR, Stage2 Tour fwys and hybrids are all an option these days...

Won't play Callaway. Had a set of XR Irons when I first started and the face cracked in my 4 Iron. Ever since then I see them spending more time on marketing than their products.

I also don't like PXG Strictly because of their commercials.

TM Woods, Mizuno Irons/Wedges, and Putter is all feel. Thats how my bag is currently built.

Driver and wood - Titleist. Better options out there; TM, Cally, Cobra.

Irons - TM. Sorry but I just can't.

Wedges - Ping and Cobra. Prefer Cleveland or Cally.

Putter - SC. Cannot justify the price for what it is.

Most importantly, I can play ANYTHING if they pay me to bag it.

For some reason Cobra never did much for me but their more recent efforts look better.

Nike and Taylormade!

One particular player who just returned to the game is the reason. I know that is a stupid reason! I wouldn't play something because a professional uses it because it has to work for me. But, I will shun away from what someone uses for some reason?

Titileist. Ping. Callaway.

1: Don't like their logos. If callaway was just their chevron, I wouldn't mind them. Titleist and ping have no true logo that I can think of. It's just their name in A specific font. That's it. Boring.

2: Just like they're logo is boring, the stereotype I think of when I see those brands are a bit snobby and stuck in old tradition - not the people that play the stuff, the company themselves.

3: they don't really have any colors in their schemes. Give me some flash!!!

Nike had flash. HAD flash. Substance wins out over style.

Still not touching titleist, Ping or Callaway. I'll play pxg before those boring traditional companies.

I fail to understand what's so bad about Titleist? I give them top marks because they stick with what good players look for: no offset and thin toplines. This is not to say all their clubs have no offset because they do make clubs for high-handicappers. I am talking here about their premium sticks.

Their woods I also praise for traditional shape and zero face angle, most notably 983K, 905R and a few others.

How can you not like these clubs? Do you really need the bells and whistles?

For me it's Tayormade I had an R7 425 driver in high school and loved it, but I just haven't been crazy about any of their products. They will get to the back then it's just like I want it out so I can play the under dog equipment. I guess I enjoy not having any of the same clubs in the bag as the people I play with locally. Will some guys have Ping glides because they play all ping sure, but usually when something stays in the bag it's because it is unique, feels right and performs.

Interesting to read the description. For whatever reason i've never liked Wilson staff clubs. From all accounts, they are great performers and are well priced. Perhaps its a throwback to when I first started out as a kid and Wilson clubs were the ones you got in a box from Wal-Mart, whereas other brands were the ones you paid lots of money for at the pro shop. Irrational, illogical I know, but I like having nice gear and I can't get this stigma out of my head when looking for new stuff.

I really don't like Callaway. I've never really hit their clubs well, and the pro at one of our courses loves them so he carries little else. I don't like him very much, so that probably doesn't help. Also, PXG is cost-prohibitive, and I don't really like that elite-type attitude. Also, have never been a fan of Wilson. Other than that, I'll try just about anything.

I'll play anything that works and is affordable

My sentiments exactly. I have no hate for any company. I could give 2 hoots less about their marketing strategies , product cycles or who owns them or what they may have or may have not done or for that matter who is on their tour staff

Northwestern clubs :busted_cop:

Too darn funny I spit tobacco and coffee all over my keyboard and screen-- even though I will truthfully admit I did carry a little Northwestern laminate 6 wood back in the day and I did have a Northwestern blade 3 iron I could mortally kill until the face split wide open hitting a ball one day no joke :taunt:
