Any news on the Next Titleist Driver???

For those that say they spin too much. Can you at least tell us a little bit about your game?

 

I really don't want to hear a 15 handicap tell us that they can't "game" a Titleist because it spins too much.

I find their drivers "clicky".....

 

I've hit some of my longest drives with a D3. After finding the right shaft and weight.

 

The reason I play a Taylor made now is the no charge shaft selection they had in '16.

I have very high hopes for the new drivers and I'm eager to learn more when things leak! Hard to deny they offer the best adaptor hands down. For me it goes...Ping...Titleist...repeat. BB

From the mouth of one of their fitters I was told the following:

 

- Possibly 3 drivers in 919 series

- one may be glued hosel which may mean a lower priced less adjustable option but he wasn’t 100% it would priced this way. It could be higher priced with options to order specific lie angles

- SP700 TI face to give higher ball speeds across more of the face

 

Carbon crowns weren’t in the discussion but I’m surprised they couldn’t of developed 909 Comp...assuming carbon crowns are all they’ve cracked up to be??

I'm hoping for something great. Haven't been able to beat Titleist drivers with anything else. Hitting 917D2 now and excited about next release. Not too high spinning for me.

Spoke with a friend who works for titleist as a travelling fitter for clubs in canada.

 

Said he saw a couple sketches and notes, the look is your typical titleist driver but its going to be marketed much differently this year. They are experimenting with a much thinner face and the driver will be focused more on distance/ball speed than a “players club” like before. He says he expects it to keep up with M3/M4/epic/etc in terms of ball speed, titleist has been listening to the comments saying they have been lagging behind in the distance category. This years driver will be much less focused on look/feel and more on performance/speed.

 

He also said he saw nothing about any composite in the sketches and notes, so expect the classic all titanium titleist build. Players on tour will have it in the bag in july.

Would be cool to see them develop something with some firepower but not at the cost of feel. If they aren't the longest, they have often been one of the best feeling out there, personally I'd rather have that and be a few yards shorter but we will see. I keep trying others but will gravitate towards Titleist again at some point.

Love the D2, but wouldn’t be opposed to them adding a D1 head similar in profile to PING’s larger looking Driver profile. Keep the D3 obviously as well.

Has anyone mentioned that there is already a driver named 919, and it’s not a Titleist?

 

I was going to bring this up. Wishon has had the 919THI on the market for a long time now and I wonder if there will be any issues with the naming or not. The "THI" part might be just enough difference.

 

Also wanted to state that I wouldn't be surprised if Titleist used their "cheetah" technology that they are using in Japanese VG3 line of drivers. This is similar to the waffle crown that is on the underside of the Mizuno drivers' crowns where they are saving weight from the crown to be used elsewhere. The underside of the crown looks like it has spots all over it (like a Cheetah) and is covered by a carbon sheet. It won't save as much as a full carbon crown but could free up some to lower the CG and maybe reduce spin. As someone else said they could also add in the SP700 titanium that they had in the C16 driver to try and boost ballspeed a little bit.

Now that I think of it, I believe Wishon had a 915 driver, so maybe it's a non-issue. Or maybe as you said, the suffixes make it okay, like THI, D2, etc.

I've had the D3 8.5 since Dec 16 and I have a 3.3 handicap. On a launch monitor it has a higher spin rate for me than the M1, M2, M3, and Epic. I can't hit the hit Epic, M1, or M2 straight consistently with any shaft/head combo. Don't really know why, except just mental predisposition. I also prefer the way the 917 looks at address and sounds and feels at impact. I might lose a couple yards with the 917, but I am in the fairway far more often than I would be otherwise and that's the best way for me to score. In changing/selecting clubs, perceived confidence is my number one "metric" when choosing the one. I am never going to gain enough from one 2018 driver to another to pick based on trackman data and ignore feel.

It's probably more than mental disposition. More backspin makes for a more predictable flight. Think about the knuckleball in baseball. It has essentially no spin, and no one knows where it is going. So there has to be a sweet spot for each golfer, not necessarily the lowest spin at the right launch angle.

Look forward to the release. After trying an epic sz, rogue sz and cobra F8 I went back to 917 D2. I put an atmos black shaft in and this setup is my favorite based on feel/results. I find more fairways and have been at or longer distance then the three I tried. I think it just comes down to fit, feel and preference.

Im a 4 I would say Titleist Drivers spin to much for me with the no up-charge shaft offerings. Main Reason why I go with TM no up-charge hzrdus black

2 things I'd love to see from the next Titleist...a weight kit included in the purchase of a driver and them ditching the stupid diamana shafts and getting some new options previously not offered (like the new proforce v2, hzrdus, etc) without an upcharge. $500 is enough for a driver, it's ridiculous what a weight kit and shaft upcharge can bring the total to.

 

Maybe a third model, a hybrid of the d3 and d2, could be fun also.

Have to admit, for the price point and the ABILITY to mess with the weight set up, it is more than a little irritating that the weight kits are so expensive.

 

I Agree completely that if you want to charge 5 bills for a driver with a stock shaft you should be able to throw in a damn weight kit as a nice freebie. At a minimum they should be FAR more affordable. It’s completely negating the point of the adjustability feature of the head if almost no one actually uses it.

 

I have a 9.5 and a 10.5 D3 and I mess with the weight using a combination of hot melt and lead tape.

 

.....and I happen to love them. I need to enjoy looking at a driver. They are pretty. And with 10 grams of hot melt in them they sound wonderful. More muted and solid sounding than Stock.

 

I’ve never actually been on a launch monitor with them and don’t care much about spin. This website is utterly freaking obsessed with spin. It’s weird. Bordering on psychotic. They look good, they sound good, the flight is good, I can work them both ways, and I’m longer than 99% of the people Ive played with in the last 18 months since I’ve had them. They go 300+ in the summer when the fairways are running fast. Good enough for me.

 

Although I will be first in line to buy the new one if it still stays pretty and gets solid reviews. Stick my KKDC 70TX on it and be good for 2 more years.

That shaft has been incredible for me. I’ve got two 70’s and a 60tx.

Hzrdus T1100 vs Tensei Pro White..Pretty sure the T1100 is a much lower spinning shaft....Epic(higher spin of Callaway Models) vs D3(lowest spin of Titleist Models)

 

No Doubt if fit properly with an unlimited Budget you can get Titleist to spin around what you want.

Idiocy. 45+” drivers. The worst thing to happen to the weekend warrior in the entire history of Golf equipment.

 

There Should be a law that you can’t have a driver longer than 44” without a certified professional fitting to prove that it will actually benefit you. Like a doctors prescription.

 

Played just yesterday with a mid handicapper with a brand spanking new ‘17 M1. Noticed he was choked up 2.5 inches. Asked him why. Said he couldn’t hit the damn thing to save his life if he didn’t choke up. Hahahaha. Imagine that. So sad.

If you are familiar with Toll Bros shaft review, the T1100 spun about 200 RPM's less than the Tensei Pro White. Just like the D3 head probably spins about 200 RPM's lower than the D2. I think we get caught up in spin way too much. Given equal launch conditions and a ball speed of 165 mph on FlightScope optimizer, a ball that spins 2k RPM's is 3 yards longer than one that spins 2,500 RPM's. Very negligible.
