Taylormade developed an amazing way, with speed foam to increase ball speed. But it was a reaction to the M irons faces caving in due to the tech overpowering the durability. They probably have many versions of it. In inner circles it’s known that it’s a pain in the butt to put something behind a face for speed or feel without slowing the face down. High face flex =crappy clacky feel. So taylormade, Callaway and pxg figured it out in irons. Most everyone else leaves the iron hollow or doesn’t make a hollow body. That issue isn’t a problem with huge driver faces which are easier to get to flex, which is why drivers are the only club with face speed restrictions. The other clubs due to being shorter, more lofted, spinnier, and smaller faces have to do a lot to get speed up. Drivers are a dead club, pretty much maxed out. Focus on the shaft dynamics, and settup to improve performance. Most players don’t settup behind or stay behind the ball enough to upswing it and release it properly.

Thanks for the info and opinions. Just to clarify, driver is not the only club with the COR restriction.

That anti- speed foam description came from TaylorMade’s rep himself. No egg nog here. It’s actual true. Wait until it comes out then your be eating crow.

Right. The foam is used to bring the face back down to legal CT. Slowing the ball speed down since, by itself, the face is too hot.

For anyone who’s wondering the new M5/M6 drivers will have a second face like plate behind the face to hold some kind of anti speed foam to slow down the sweet spot due to the whole face speeding up to increase power on off center hits. The red screws are to hold the plate in place. With all that weight up front they added more carbon fiber throughout the body to even out or not to reduce MOI. You all should expect all new products to incorporate their foam tech until they run out of ideas. Even if all those ideas are “ borrowed from previous inventions that weren’t developed well enough. Just like tha 10 year old KZG Gemini driver that had 2 faces vacuum sealed to increase face flex. Your welcome

So let me get this straight, Taylormade are using egg nog to speed up the face?

I agree that they should come up with a totally different name from speed foam. I can't imagine that the marketing people would let something like 'anti-speed foam' make it into the literature. Resin seems like the way to go. FWIW I'm excited to give this and the m5 fairway a run. I know I groused about the price tag of the m5 fairway... But man. Mid launch and ti face. Mmmmm.

You’re right. I think originally I remember that stated when .830 was introduced. The cobra and tm reps I talk to say they are at or close to the limit on fairway woods. Pardon the mistake

No prob

At least two companies have been at max COR for fairways for a good decade. Wishon has had irons and hybrids at .83 for nearly as long.

So basically a vertical line from the screws up to the crown is the boundary of the sweet spot now? And that entire area is really close to the same COR?

Balls are being hit all over the face and the ball speed is not changing much.

If it flat out performs, might just go with a tour spoon and use it as a driver replacement
