How do you choose your grips?

Solidstrike

Recommended Posts

There are so many grips to choose from these days. It used to be standard or jumbo, regular or cord, then Winn came along and mixed it up. Then along came various materials and now various taper options. It can be confusing to stare at a wall of so many options.

How do you choose your grips? Do you stick do a staple like the tour velvets? Are they all good enough and does it really matter?

I got used to the Tour Velvet (logo down) and the grip still feels "right". I've tried and am still currently gaming multi compounds on my irons, but will replace them with the Tour Velvet as soon as I can set aside the time to do so.

For me I go by how the club feels in my hands in regards to choosing a grip.

I'm the same way, I went to the New Decade MultiCompound grips this past offseason (including a +4 on my driver). I really like the multicompounds on my wedges and woods/hybrids but for lack of a better word I missed the feel of the Tour Velvets on my irons. When I got the MP-64's they had the Tour Velvets logo down on them and instantly just felt "right".

It matters hugely what grip you use IMO. It's really trial an error. I suggest investing a small amount of money in an air compressor so that you can buy a bunch of grips and try them all out quickly.

For me, I always stick to regular sized grips but I kind of go back and forth between cord and compound grips. Current grips I use are either Lamkin player's cord or Superstroke S-Tech.

I use ONLY wrap style grips because I don't wear a glove.

They're very similar to the leather grips with which I learned the game decades ago...only better imo.

Either Winn Excel or Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G is just fine.

It just has to be a wrap. I re-grip anything that doesn't come with a wrap grip.

Except for putters although I have wrap grip putters as well__particularly my hickory shafted ones.

Out of the 13 clubs in my bag (excluding my driver), I have...6 different grips.

Driver: MCC Plus 4

3 Wood: Winn Excel Wrap Standard

2 iron: Stock TaylorMade branded Tour Velvet

3 iron: Pure Pro Standard

4-PW: NDMC

Wedges: Golf Pride Z Grip

I also have 3 different putters that I rotate in & out of my bag...and all 3 have different brand, style, and sized grips.

I just get whatever I find on sale/for cheap. Or I just look for a specific color. I'm not very picky at all with what grips I use.

I learned a lot about grips by experimenting with different types over a period of several months. It was well worth the (relatively modest) investment of time and effort. The two things that helped the most were:

(1) Learning to change grips myself, meaning that I could quickly and inexpensively change a grip or two whenever I wanted to try something different.

(2) Going to big box stores that had a decent selection of used clubs, allowing me to put my hands on a much wider selection of grips that have been installed onto actual clubs (most of which I could hit on a sim at the store if I wished) without making the investment myself.

After some time I have settled on the following.

MCC on any clubs that are adjustable and my 56* and 60* wedges that I might play shots in the open position. I have a huge supply of the black/black version. I love the feel of these grips and they seem to last much better for me.

Tour Velvet Align on all fixed clubs. Irons and 50* wedge as I like the reminder rib type grip for playing drawings and fades.

Flat Cat Tak standard size putter grip on all putters. It's like a large putter grip in the ol Pingman type rubber.

Not choosing - Golf Pride Tour Velvet BCT with the Golf Pride logo on underneath and that is me. Has been for so long now that I can't even remember. I did try MC's, thought that they were horrible.

Comfort and grip/ traction. I like the NDMC grips typically with the Plus 4 version on my wedges (helps with chip shots, etc.). I also have several with Lamkins Z5 grips on them as I am looking for something that's less expensive than the NDMC grips which are getting really expensive. Recently got a Max driver with the Tour Velvet grip installed and I like it much more than I expected. Overall I like the cord grips for weather extremes (cold, humid, etc.).

I used wraps,ndmc,ndmc+4,Lamkin full cord, z cord, tour velvet, and ace 3gen. What I found to be the best was going up a size to midsize on the irons with the 2 g wrap and stkick with the ndmc+4 standard on driver and fairways. I used to play with a stronger than normal double overlap grip and entirely too firm grip pressure. After correcting both of those the midsize iron grip reminds me not to strangle the club. I typically play without a glove and have no issue playing in humid conditions with or without cord. In a perfect world the midsize full cords would come to retail and I would use those. The only grips I refuse to play with are Winn, for they would not hold up to the abuse.

If anything can go right, it might!

Tour velvet for 20 plus years. I decided to give MCC PLUS 4 a try on the new set of irons, they felt great when I was testing irons but, after 30 + rounds I'm thinking otherwise.

Color then texture. Loving the new decade multi's because I like it soft on my bottom hand and then rough and easier to grip up top. I found a single GP x Calaway neon yellow one (I think they came out in '14 based on http://www.golfwrx.c...ies-exoticsmcc/) in the leftover bin at the store here, been trying to find the same ones online so I can swap all my clubs

The main for me is to make sure I've got something that doesn't bring any extra attention to the grip--I've got more important things to think about while taking the swing! First, you have to make some basic decisions like soft vs. hard and standard size vs. else, then hone in from there. Those basic decisions will eliminate most of the things that bring undue attention to the grip (like the grip is too soft, too big, etc.). After that it's a bit of trial and error until you find the perfect match. When you find it, stick with it!

I've played GolfPride pretty exclusively, starting with the Tour Velvet for a long time then recently switching to the NDMC white/black, logos down for the past 3 years and love them. They've helped me lighten my grip pressure since. The only downside is that they're quite hard and less responsive than the velvets.

When I was learning about clubmaking back in the 80s, one of the things I found most intriguing was grip size and tape manipulation. You can do anything you want to a standard grip with buildup tape. I toyed around with a lot of different diameters and tapers until I found what worked best for me. I then took my calipers and took measurements for every inch from butt to collar. I use the same diameter and taper to this day. There is a proper size for everyone, you just have to find it.
