Costco Putters are in... (MOD EDIT - NO CORONAVIRUS, POLITICS, BUY/SELL/TRADE POSTS)

Maybe I missed it, but I haven't seen anything that indicates the manufacture of the Kirkland putter owns the CNC milling machines. If I'm wrong, I apologize, but I think this is an assumption you are coming up with that isn't supported by what I've seen.

I was responding to itsPinHigh who wrote, "It’s a legit putter made by a well named manufacturer. But I am not allowed to say."

I'm just pointing out that if it's CNC milled (and Costco says it is) I'm not sure you could say it's "made" by (insert OEM name here) if they subcontracted the CNC work, they aren't selling it, and their name is not on the putter.

But I guess it goes to what you consider the word "made" to mean.

Got it. Toe-may-toe, toe-mah-toe. I thought maybe you had read something specific that I had missed, which I would have been interested in. Maybe the proper thing for him to have said is that Costco is purchasing the putters from a well-known manufacturer (or, the putters are being provided by a well-known manufacturer). But, I get your point.

It's UNS grade 303, a machinable stainless steel. Looking around putter makers like Scotty use the same thing. There are only so many stainless grades that one can use because they are ridiculously hard and difficult to machine otherwise.

Cleveland uses 304 stainless in their Huntington Beach line and thats a slightly harder/less machinable grade, but the two are very similar.

I think the main takeaway is the Costco is made from the same stuff as the top shelf. I don't think there is a tremendous feel difference between those two metals (it's all metal after all) but it appears they aren't cutting any corners in materials

Appreciate the response. I don’t have much experience with a true fully milled putter with no insert, outside of rolling a few at a golf retailer. And the fact that it was highlighted in the article made me ponder. so I was definitely interested if there’s a difference in feel between different types of steel they’re using, that an average amateur could feel a difference.

Thanks.

regardless, if I can get my hands on one, 100% I’ll give it a try.

Credible source told me Toulon gave them the design and set them up with the manufacturing in a straight up exchange for all you can eat free lunch at the Carlsbad Costco food court.

Reason they had to push the release date back till June is because The pandemic closed down HQ and he can’t take advantage of his end of the deal until it re-opens.

Dan from third period science told me during study hall that these are actually secretly forged by Miura from soft carbon that was aged 30 years (triple aged) in old Japanese whiskey barrels, then the faces are milled using a retired coin milling machine used for the edges of 1970’s silver dollars from the US Treasury Mint in Denver, CO. There will be an option for a leather grip made from only the finest Swiss bullhides raised in non-barbwire fencing. The upgraded headcover option is made of recycled pleather from Charlie Murphy’s old coach. And the paintfill is hand-applied by Andy Warhol’s grandson.

I look at this way, it should help drop the price on the new putters coming out. I can understand a one of a kind, custom made for having a high price tag but an off the rack putter price's have gotten out of control.

According to that article, the weight set is going to be sold online, while the putter will be sold in stores. Hints, implying the weight kit won't be included with the putter.

Total deal breaker for me....okay, okay, I wasn't going to buy it in the first place...

Looking forward to seeing flippers trying to sell on BST, having it backfire and them just returning it to costco.

BST: BNIP KSIG putter! Willing to trade for high end scotty cameron, bettinardi, even Tyson Lamb. Need to add cash on your end.

I like the argument that Costco making what looks like a high end putter will exert some downward pressure on prices across the board, but I wouldn't expect too much, as the bespoke and big OEM's still have engineering costs to try to recoup, Costco does not.

Personally, I don't get what the fascination with trying new putters is with low handicap golfers. My index is in the high 20's. If the rest of my game was as "on par" as my putting, my average score would be a 68. Putting is the only easy part of this difficult game we're all obsessed with.

I'll stick with my ($10 on eBay) Model 400 until I'm convinced that a missed putt is the fault of the equipment and not my read.

Don't think having a low handicap means we don't have putting struggles. Last sunday I hit 15 of 18 greens in regulation and only had 1 one putt. 5 weeks ago I had 9 putts on 9 holes. I'm seeking that putter that gives me the most consistency and I'm not going to stop looking until I find it.

And to agree with you, yes, it is mostly the read and the guy holding the putter that determines the outcome.
