Here’s the thing about change.

When you change things to make other demographics like it or buy it in this case. You’re changing what your core customer wants. So you have to ask. “ can I attract more youth than I have 63 and up now “? Answer is certainly no chance. Not even a small chance. at Some point the thing you’re changing to suit others ceases to be the thing that is was. And that’s where change fails.

Your essentially accusing the base of being dumb enough to not notice , while you take the product they’ve loved for years and re-fit it to attract new customers .

Weve already seen it fail in nascar. The sport is in decline , they selll less tickets than ever and now constantly come up with new gimmicks to try to keep the youths short attention span. It’s a terrible long term corner to paint yourself into.

What you should do is accept the steady Growth or retention , for the real product that’s been loved for 70 years or so. Teach kids who are interested in golf , the history and tradition , and forget about the ones who aren’t interested.

In other words. Stop trying to make chocolate cake taste like strawberry to attract more buyers. All you’ll end up with is a customer base full of strawberry cake lovers. Which will force you to then sell strawberry cake.

I completely agree with this statement. You have to maintain some level of values. Now, going back to what this topic is about. I do not believe that hiring Wie is an assault on those values. I do not believe there is a huge market need right now for a minority female color commentator. I do not see that bringing in viewers that are not already tuning in. She is not going to change golf popularity by this.

I do however welcome this change. She is popular, was very skilled, and has been around the game her whole life. So may have something positive to add. Along with that there are sooooo many things that you can do to improve the golf viewing experience. Less shots of people putting, more shot tracer, more of what the masters did this year. etc. I am not expecting it to turn into the super bowl. But show more stinking golf, not just putting.

Good luck Wie!!

Agreed. This single event isn't going to change anything by itself and it isn't going to do much in terms of boosting viewership at the Masters (Tiger's performance alone will have a far greater impact), but it is still a change, not the same ol same o,l let's stick with the status quo, etc etc, which is clearly no longer working.

We all live in different areas, at my club the majority of female youth golfers are not white (same with the boys), so the market need/impact of a female minority commentator can easily vary by demographic/area.

Blade,

I do not see this as trying to market golf as something it's not, the sport itself is the same, I see this as golf culture changing. Gfore/Malbon/Nike/Puma/Linksoul/etc are all clearly steering their marketing away from the traditional 60+ CC member demographic, and instead are trying to make the sport and lifestyle as a whole more attractive to those dreaded lazy entitled millennial's the so called boomers like to gripe about. I'm sure the suit and tie generation griped just as much about the over sized polo and pleated khaki generation as much as the over-sized polo and pleated khaki generation now gripes about joggers and jordans.

If you want to talk about nonsense, let's talk about those tour van only forged vokeys you and only you claim to exist. You boast that you are some insightful insider, yet can only back it up with lip service and petty insults. Either way, I'm done with you and your dillusions.

Can't wait for the Masters! Will be interesting to see how Wie is worked into the coverage. Tiger, Brooks, Rory and Wie are all Nike contracted athletes, I wonder if this move was partially done to leverage that relationship.

well said... the words inclusiveness and openness are cancerous as they are empty meaningless virtue signalling. I teach junior clinics to make extra money for my tourneys and mini tours stops.I dont see any more diversity today then i saw 25 years ago on the course. Golf is a niche sport. The only demographic Ive personally seen and the #s show are growing are younger women playing. Pandering to people who will never watch while telling the people who do watch FU always ends badly. Work the hell out of social media accounts and hope enough young people see cool shots that they are then inspired to go and re enact. The masters is the best broadcast of the year.almost no commercials, professional hole by hole analysis. Fans behave because theyre scared to death to get lifetime bans. The course is the star. The masters website and mobile apps are the best, second to none.Just because i think Wie has no business on that telecast doesnt mean i dont embrace "change" or "diversity". Shes vapid and empty.

Says that guy insisting that tour players play disguised forged Vokeys. Did you ever give any proof of that or did you just abandon that thread, I can't remember. ?

Not what you stated at all in previous thread. In addition, Vokeys released to Japan have not always been forged, rather, were a more common release (instead of limited release like in US) in that market due to preference for forged product.status.

ANGC had a lot to do with this as they want to appeal to women and increase their equality platform. First they host a women's international amateur event the week before, now an Asian female is part of the broadcast. This is a long overdue move from as old school of an organization as there is ANGC. If Hottie was still alive, they would still be in the dark ages. Women can broadcast golf just as well as men, although I like the takes of former players to be able to talk through a situation, like Johnny Miller lite perhaps.

You're trying to pivot your argument to something defensible. What you said verbatim was:

"Vokey wedges for consumers in the US are cast. Tour players are usually using Vokey heads from Japan, which are forged."

When asked to prove this, you said you lived in Japan for 25 years and that all Vokeys there are forged, which is not what was asked. You were asked to prove that TOUR PLAYERS are using are using these forged heads, which you can't, so you've changed the argument.

Vokey forged vs not has WHAT to do with Michelle Wie becoming a broadcaster?

Please take that argument elsewhere.

Lol. Then why does anyone disagree that that demographic is now and will always be the driving force. I’m not in that boat and I see it. Weekends aren’t any younger. Just a sprinkling of youth here or there.
