How come so many golfers on here it driver 300yds +

The number 4.8 M is highly suspect. Comes from a trackman study that used 10,000 golfer that took the trackman combine - and resulted in 7% of them having club head speed of 106+ - and then assuming there are 60M golfers worldwide - the National Golf Foundations data has only 24M in the US that played a round on a course - 2.6M were first time golfers, 2.5M juniors, 5.7M female. So given 24M and 7% that would come to 1.7M in US alone - highly doubt this number. The USGA has handicap indexes for only around 2-3M golfers -and only 10% are 5 cappers or better (assuming 3M this is 300K - do all these folks hit it 300?) - so are we to think that the 20M or so golfer without indexes include some 1.4M+ folks that can hit it 300? Makes little sense.

No. We have had a Golftec facility in our store for 18 months and no one has consistently hit 300 yds. except one of the instructors. As a Master Fitter for the last 17 years, only five of my customers have hit that standard.

Carry? or carry+roll?

Those are very different numbers, obviously.

285 carry is a 300 yard drive on most courses in most conditions. Lots more good golfers can get to 285 carry than to 300 carry. 285 carry is like throwing 88 to 89 mph in baseball. Every high school has a couple kids that can do that. 300 carry is like a 94 - 95 mph fastball, and that's a very different animal. :-)

Carry and roll. The typical customer rarely gets over 90 mph swing speed and a smash factor of 1.39.

Fast, firm hole conditions help make long hitters. Lots of people hit the ball big, just can't find the ball. However, I am sure Golfwrx has more than it's fair share of big hitters and better golfers. When we look at big hitters quantitatively, there are not that many factoring legit handicapped golfers. Unfortunately, lots of people that experience an unusually big drive attribute that distance to be how far they hit it.

In 30+ years playing golf, excluding Pro-Am's, I can count on two hands the number of guys that I've actually played golf with that hit the ball over 300yds. (I took $$$ from five of them) The most memorable guy I played with was two years back. We played from back tees and he used his driver only one time during that round, 18th hole. On an elevated tee he carried the ball over 375yds, flew the green and it finished somewhere over 400 yards, never to be found. That same tee box I hit it 290yds to the middle with a wedge in; that's exceptionally huge for me, and that same course 2 iron 235yds; I love fast fairways. For an ole guy, I am still getting it out there, but only 240-250 in the middle.

When I talk about couple guys I play with, it is carry distance not carry+roll. One other guy that I used to play with often before he moved away. Look at his trackman specs. Those guys are strong with fast twitch muscles.

if your ball speed in in the 170’s it is not an issue in most conditions. I play mostly with geezers like myself these days and they all think 250+ carry is 300+. Currently there are a couple of younger players in our circle who hit 175+ ball speed, but one is a 12 index and the other is a 17. Plenty of folks blessed with speed who are not low cappers. I will agree that in the age 50 plus group, legitimate 300 yarders are rare without “help”.

So all you guys should find this funny. Played in a 2 person best ball today. Was playing the #1 handicap hole which is a 460 yard par 5 from the forward tees. Late in the round so I was hitting driver on holes I usually don't (we were behind). Wind was blowing around 20 mph over my right shoulder. I tagged one really well with a medium flight slight draw. It landed just on the down slope past a bunker left of the fairway bouncing madly down the firm fairway. These are south TX firm fairways. I had 112 yards left to a front pin. LOL. I have no idea whether the card is right. It probably can't be correct, but you can easily see how these stories of 300+ drives get started. It was a good poke, but not sure I covered 3 bills or not. To ensure your incredulity, remember I am a 58 year old fat lady!

Well, let's just say when the topic of golf comes up and the very first thing claimed is the ability to hit 300 yard drives, my BS detector starts flickering strong. It's when I take the conversation into another realm of golf that I'm then exposed to how little they know about the game. I think 'everyone' knows pro golfers hit 300 yard drives so that's the first and only thing a s**t-talker will claim to."if you are reasonably athletic, understand how to use your body, and have decent hand eye coordination."

Aaargh! You make it sound so simple, stop it!

I can admit that, unlike all the other clubs, I still have near zero feel with the driver. It's just a big, long, stupid mystery stick in my hands. I'm in total understanding of what I need to do with my body but there's nothing more frustrating than being unable to develop that feel. I don't even care about the yardage anymore, would just love to swing in tempo with a balanced finish more than 4 or 5 times a year. Evil club!

I have no problem with people bragging about hitting it 300. It’s fun, it’s fine, a bit of teasing may be in order.

However, the ones proud of hitting their PW 150 has got to go. There is no world long PW contest on espn, although that would be fun to watch, and golfers lose more shots coming up short and losing distance, trajectory and directional control because they don’t hit their wedges as far as they think and swing too hard.

Hey, I can hit my LW 150 yards! It takes bit of skill to blade it on purpose! :-)

But I do agree with you, golfers doesn't need to brag about nuking their short irons.

Bragging about hitting a big one is fine. But it's not good to take that "1" unusual drive and claim its yardage as "how far you hit driver." What's fun though is play golf with someone that claims to hit it big, yet not see him hit any drive within 50yds of his claim. After tell him what his average drive was and ask what happen. Be prepared for a litany of baloney by enjoying a dram of scotch and fine cigar.
I agree with @MonteScheinblum regarding PW yardage too. Nobody cares.

I was a disbeliever of the amateur 300+ drives, and still don't see too many guys capable of doing it, although I believe that if there is one place to find them, it's probably on this forum.

This shot cost me 20 bucks. 27 year old former hockey player... I bet he couldn't reach the green. Thought it was an easy 20 bucks.
