Yep. And a lot of suicides. There are studies that suggest sports curb suicide rates by a significant margin . We humans need a distraction to keep our heads in the game.

Yeah, that’s kinda sad and scary...and darkly cold.

It’s a dark road we’re going on right now.

I called (or rather grouped texted) my regular Saturday game at the CC. As the unofficial spiritual leader of the group I decided to unilaterally cancel golf for all of us (in the group) until further notice.

my wife is a level I trauma Emergency Room physician in Texas...an MD, FACEP....

we are currently on a vacation in Arizona and she and I went to a casino yesterday (it’s rained every day this week so we left our kindergartener with our awesome in-laws)..

this is not a commentary on the virus except she would not stick our daughter on a plane then go to a casino if she was worried about our health...no chance...

Again, this is our choice but she is a scientist, physician, wife and mother...her opinions are based upon the cdc, nih and viral behavior of corona...Her reasoning is too complex [for me] to explain

anyhow, don’t know the point Of my post but we will happily be on a fairly empty return flight home tomorrow without masks but maybe hand sanitizers..

i asked her how worried she was on a scale of ten and said “our little girl flew across the country and we went to a casino. I don’t have a number low enough to answer”

Surprised everyone is freaking out so hard over a bit of inconvenience. Bottom line is had officials acted decisively early none of this would even be on the table, but they didn't, so here we are.

You know why they put in protocols like this? Because you have people like the genius from Dartmouth who was positive for the virus then took himself out of quarantine because he didn't want to miss a mixer. There's not manpower to enforce what's needed unless we go to full marshal law everywhere, and so the best alternative is to cancel large gatherings until this is under control.

If people would just decide the good of all mattered more than their own desires this wouldn't be necessary, but considering many of the vectors have been the well-to-do jet setting from a hotspot and bringing it to distant shores it's clear we need to be protected from ourselves. I mean Tom Hanks and his wife Rita ended up with it because the world doesn't stop for the rich and famous.

We don't know the true morality rate of this yet, we don't fully know how long it survives in the air or on surfaces, and we don't know how long it will be until we have a vaccine. There's nothing wrong with being cautious and avoiding spreading it en masse rather than taking risks for the sake of a few sporting and music events.

It's ironic to see a number of people talking about overreaction while going on diatribes about how these events being called off is some end of the world horror on its own. The sooner outbreaks are contained the sooner things go back to normal. We are where we are because officials early on refused to acknowledge the severity of this and certain others were unwilling to be inconvenienced by a virus they were certain they too rich or too intelligent to get or spread.

Well, I guess people who know better than us decided to cancel the tournament. It's the way it goes sometimes. It will free up weekends to go play without having to watch. Outdoors, fresh air, social distancing. Win, win for everybody.

It’s nuts. You can’t get more open air and, if you choose, proximity averse than a golf course without fans. The pros were more at risk during the unnecessary press conferences than on the course. They will be more at risk on the trip home than on the course.

Meanwhile, we’ve apparently decided the key to our survival is toilet paper.

I don’t necessarily oppose the idea that cramming 10,000 people into a stadium is bad. Same with the Petri dish of the school environment...but if you can’t have players spread out over acres of open air, we might as well shut the planet down because every shop, market, office, restroom, plane, train and automobile is more dangerous than a golf course where you can literally keep your distance from every other human if you want.

All this point the main method of spreading the virus in the US is Costco.

I really hope they can find a way to play the masters without a crowd. I think it might be a unique experience to watch.

I don't think there's anything wrong with being prepared for the worst. if it doesn't come, great. I'm stocked up on soup for the next time I get a cold. But if you've noticed these viruses are happening regularly now. There's more and more people and if you're a hunter you know what happens to game populations when numbers get too high. Nature corrects. So even if this one is an overreaction - maybe the next one won't be and at least we'll have some practice.

I live in Asia where this has been going on for nearly 2 months now. At the end of Jan i thought the LPGA tournaments here would be cancelled and they were. I am surprised this has taken over US sports so fast. Partly from a culture standpoint and also from a population density difference (with many parts of the US).

The good news is the hysteria/panic will subside in a few weeks time, and most will be unaffected or have fully recovered.

That being said, I do think this is very serious for the population. For many, they can easily recover or won't even know they got it. But that doesn't mean it's just the flu. This virus is crushing the old / sick. You can be healthy, have it and show no symptoms, and then pass it on to someone that isn't as fortunate health wise. Unfortunately, most people only consider their own situation when forming their opinion here.

There will never be agreement on how much caution is the right amount. Some will say save a human life at any/all costs. Others believe there is a normal hazard rate for everything, and unfortunately some will be lost along the way. I tend to think this one warrants more caution / preventative measures to contain the situation.

Finally found something more divisive than whether you should play blades or GI clubs, golfers are just as athletic as other top sports. It's whether COVID-19 is actually a serious thing! Next we'll figure out who the anti-vaxxers are.
