Vijay - “Trash”

MattyO1984

I guess everybody sets their own threshold for things like "all time great", for me that includes Palmer, Hogan, Snead, Player, Nicklaus, Woods - those kind of guys. Billy Casper was an awesome player but not an all time great. But a legend. I look at Vijay the same way.

That comparison is different to Vijay. Here we have Vijay playing in an event he's earned the right to play in through career money earned. A title sponsor of a golf tournament can do what they want with their sponsor invites as they've put up $ to host an event. Romo was suppose to play last month in a KFT event, that was brand new to the schedule. If it wasn't for the title sponsor, that tournament most likely wouldn't have been on the schedule

Adding onto this, I'm not sure many people realize this but buying sponsor invites happens almost every week on the Korn Ferry Tour. Most players who have a big enough backing have their sponsor put up 15k-25k to play in an event. Last year there was a guy on the KFT who had about 7/8 sponsor invites, because whoever was backing him paid the cash to get him in there. He didn't make 1 cut and someone on twitter called him and the tour out about it. He was scheduled to play in an event and the week prior he was taken off the field as I'm sure the tour was getting some heat for allowing it to happen. So, I don't think fans can really get that upset with what a sponsor wants to their with their 5-8 invites they're given for putting up cash to sponsor an event.

Cejka recently won a couple Outlaw tour events here in Phoenix. Wonder if those kids were as outraged as Schneider?Tiger has over 20 lifetimes wins so can play nearly any event he wants at age 57. Same goes for VJ and why he can jump in this event. AK would need to get a sponsors exemption or past tour winner exemption and both of those are much further down the list**.

**don't flame me...yes I know the sponsors is given not earned...not certain if the past winner is for that particular event or having won any event. But that is so far down the exemption list it might not even get you into a KF event.

Oh, there were a few on twitter who moaned and groaned about Cejka winning, but he paid to play in that event so anyone was able to play. Now, the players who responded to said tweets from people who had no clue what they're talking about had nothing but good things to say about a seasoned pro playing in an event with them. There's no order of merit or right to play on the Outlaw Tour so its a different situation to what people are complaining about re: Vijay.

Past champions on the KF Tour are exempt for 3 years, and tournament winners (i think) are able to play the event they won for even a longer time period than the 3 years. Past champions in the 2-3 year range are one of the lower spots on the field list.

Calling people "trash" may be the cool thing on Twitter, but here in the real world it's antisocial behavior. The original author (who? never heard of the guy) should find a more respectful and reasonable way to convince VJ. On the other hand, if his goal is not to convince VJ to WD, but rather to incite Interent mobs, then he's done his job.

Language like this has no place in golf.

And some will whine about these guys in the Arizona Open. Hopefully more quietly than Shnell.

and a abut further down...not yet... further down.

#594 Cejka

Funny thing as I have thought before. There are about 750 MLB major league players. But if you’re in the majors most would say you’re pretty good. Same with football. Why is #594 at golf not considered that way?

Great points. If VJ does actually play in the event he will be playing out of KF Tour exemption category 19. It is way down on the KF Tour eligibility list. Any KF Tour player that are eligible to play out of categories 1-18 will have the opportunity before VJ. If VJ is eligible to play it's because enough currently exempt KF Tour players aren't playing in the current event. That's on the KF Tour players. 2020 Korn Ferry Tour eligibility ranking

Sounds like Brady Schnell needs to worry less about what other people are doing and more on what he is doing and playing his own game. If Vijay qualifies to play then it’s of no ones else’s concern what he does. If you don’t like the guy for personal reasons that’s on you. But the second you take to social media and put Vijay on blast calling him names and acting in a manner that makes others question your character and your professionalism doesn’t reflect well on you. Sadly Brady you are the one who looks like the jerk here and not Vijay.

I am not positive on this...but am thinking I heard this. VJ has the lifetime exemption for over 20 wins. If there is not a corresponding PGA Tour event that week he can use it on KF tour. Or they could just as easily call it a sponsor exemption and no one could whine.

And that's what he would be doing. I listed above why/how he could be playing on the KF Tour from an eligibility standpoint. Eligibility category 19 for the KF Tour. Brady Schnell lashes out at Vijay Singh over potentially playing Korn Ferry openerSingh has lifetime status on the PGA Tour, and at age 57 he still competes regularly against players half his age while adding an occasional start on the PGA Tour Champions. But his status won't get him into Colonial, which typically has a restricted field and includes several unique exemption categories. Under the Tour's guidelines, any fully exempt player is allowed to play in a concurrent Korn Ferry tournament as long as he is not eligible for that week's PGA Tour event. One recent example of this phenomenon came in May 2018. Stephan Jaeger had a PGA Tour card but wasn't exempt into The Players, so he made his first Korn Ferry start of the year at the Knoxville Open and went on to win the event. That same bylaw has apparently opened the door for Singh, a player with more than $71 million in career earnings and indefinite exempt status, to potentially play in a Korn Ferry event that will include dozens of cash-hungry players who are vying for a handful of PGA Tour cards.

But, again like the Outlaw events all those guys paid their $700/$800 to play so they can do what they want. With both the PGA/KFT starting up again next month there should be no issue with these guys playing in a competitive golf tournament to get ready for next month. The slogan "play better" is used a lot by pros and it sticks here in this situation.

As far as the rankings go, good golf can come and go and we've all seen players fall off. However, with so many different players finishing in certain places every week the competition and world ranking fluctuate a lot. Anyone who is inside (I'd say) the top 700/800 in the world can win any week or any tour.

I think Schnell's point is that Singh is taking a spot that a fledgling pro may need to earn points/money. Therefore, while different, it is directly comparable to sponsor's exemptions.

I understand the differences but also the point that this guy is trying to make. After all, "apples and oranges" often ignores the fact that they are both still fruits.

Here are the categories below him...21. Reordered With Pts Finishers 2-5 Prev Years PGA TOUR LA/Can/China27. Korn Ferry Tour - Past Champions 2017 & 201828. International Tours 4-5/KFT Points List 76-100/Addl. Finishers QT

Looking at the list of players from these categories there are a bunch who lost their KFT status last year, had to go back to Q school, lost their PGA status, or have played well enough in the 6 events so far who have graduated from the 3 development tours below the KFT.

Vijay has earned his spot in the event based on his priority ranking (As a PGA tour member) as I posted above, he isn't breaking any rules or taking anything away from anyone. He is categorized as a player with better status compared to his peers in the rankings. The player who is currently first alternate doesnt have better status than him and therefore not currently in the field.

If there is anything or anyone to blame its the tour's fault for allowing the ranking

There is a total of 6 PGA tour pros (including Vijay) who are in the event because they aren't exempt into Colonial

Not much of a VJ fan, but I see nothing wrong with professionals playing a tournament just to keep sharp or because it’s a local tournament and they’re helping a sponsor get some attention for the event. I do have a problem with mouthy nobodies who delete their big, brave tweets when they get more attention than they bargained for. Maybe the lack of discipline is part of why he’s 132 on the KF points list.

Vijay will sell more tickets. No way the KFT survives on its own without the Big Tour propping it up. His tweet is a classic example of why one should tweet and drink."except". Smh

I mean, he isnt wrong. Playing on the KFT is probably below Vijay and he potentially taking a spot from some young kid or some struggling journeyman pro would could miss out on a chance that they desperately need. Even still, I think that Vijay is at a point in his career where he probaly dont really care what people think.

Vijay probably just wants to be able to write off a trip to the Bahamas as a business expense.

no one has ever been VJ's friend. there are probably reasons for that.

to expect VJ to be everyone's friend now is pretty naive. probably for moves just like this. dude don't care.
