To paraphrase one of the golf writers on Twitter - if a guy can come along and just "take"..."your spot" - it was never yours to begin with, play better.

I'm no fan of his by any stretch but he's more than earned the right to play where and when he wants. And this other guy, whoever he is, I doubt I will ever hear his name again.

Not sure I agree with the "below him" comment. Vijay has three options to play in a PGA-type tourney, Champions, PGA Tour or KFT. KFT is apparently the only option available (if he even chooses to play it) to him that particular week.

The "below him" comment though, if Tiger elects the day he turns 50 to go play Champions Tour events and dominate would that be "below him" too? I could make the same argument that Vijay shouldn't be taking bread away from the likes of Dana Quigley, Marco Dawson and Doug Barron on the Champions Tour.

I always liked VJ, myself. I was at the Deutsche Bank tournament years ago at TPC Boston when he absolutely crushed a drive. The ball followed the dogleg like it was on a track, dead middle of the fairway, at least 300 yds. I found myself calling out, “Nice drive, Veej,” like I was a buddy. Lol. He turned to me, chuckled, and said, “Thank you very much.” No big deal, I know. But hard to not like the guy after that simple exchange.

he pointed at me many years ago at Avenel after he birdied the old 17th... he remembered me from the Benson and Hedges tournament in England.. I was well chuffed... it had been so many years... Good guy!

I agree with Phil and the other similar sentiment. Whoever called him out will learn quick you probably won't be too popular if you step onto the scene calling HOFers "trash".

No problem at all...sponsors are the reason the tourney exists. If they wanna make it 100% invitational that's their right, if the PGA Tour is good with it.

What a weak post to make, go get a real job if you can't hack it. VJ, get out there and tear these young kids a new ass,

VJ is amazing, I stood 10 feet from VJ (called the shot prior to him arriving at the ball) watched him years ago on the 5th hole @Poppy Hills during the ATT turn his 8 iron upside down & play it left handed (ball against a tree) play a 140 yard fade out of the trees over water ( water has since been filled in) to a tucked pin, simply amazing ball striker, if he could have putted he'd have dozens more victories.

So much for professional golf being highly competitive. Pout enough so an accomplished pro pulls out and you can "have" his spot? What happened to the go out and earn it dog eat dog world of pro sports? I'm kind of rooting for Vijay to pi#* off the snowflakes.

We can all 'want' something we haven't earned. It doesn't mean we should get it. Happens in every job/profession/career.

If anyone is to blame, it is the PGA tour qualifying requirements. Vijay qualified for the tournament and decided to play. It is his choice. It is like saying Tiger should not have played in lower level PGA tournaments and accept the money when he was rebuilding his game and was ranked 1199th in the world. The tours are supposed to be the best players in world who qualify.

Vijay can choose "except" the money if he wins any, whatever that means. ?

No matter who gets a sponsor's exemption there will always be someone whose feelings get hurt, but it is the right of that sponsor to use as they see fit. There are more guys on the sponsors wish list hoping for a spot and not having to go play in a Monday qualifier along with guys that have no status on any tour anywhere

I don't see why a HOF golfer should be playing in a minor league event. How many other touring pros are eligible to enter KFT events and what if they all decided to enter. Great for the tournament. Bad for the guys trying to earn their cards. Who has priority in those situations?

Surprised all the pro-VJ sentiment on here given all the anti-Romo sentiment when he was given a sponsor exemption.

For example a typical tournament has 144 starters....130 +/- are reserved for KFT members, another half dozen spots may be filled from a local qualifying event, a couple of other spots may go to the sectional PGA pros from the area, which leaves a handful of sponsor exemption spots. VJ would still have to get a release from the Champions Tour or maybe even the PGA Tour too if he is still fully exempt in order to play in the event..

I am actually kind of surprised this didnt happen in a larger scale because guys are looking for any place to play after the prolonged lay off, and may not be exempt on the big boys tour

To warm up ; )

Hes got Augusta coming and, make no mistake, a guy like VJ still thinks he can have that dream tournament, even at his age.

VJ clawed his way to the top.

“He had no money; and when I say no money I mean, no money,” Dyet says as he recalls paying £32 after Singh was refused the courtesy of the course at Gullane. Dyet funded new tyres for the jalopy. “But he was an excellent guy, no problem at all. He told me everything, no secrets. And he was totally dedicated to his golf.”

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2020/may/05/vijay-singh-complicated-relationship-with-the-world-of-golf

I can’t imagine VJ can empathize with the tweeter whining of this guy.

The only reason VJ "might" play the KF Tour event is that he is not eligible for the PGA Tour event at Colonial that same week. He or any other Champions Tour player doesn't need any release from the Champions Tour to play any other PGA Tour event he is exempt for. If VJ was exempt for Colonial he would not be able to play the KF Tour event. As was noted earlier in this thread the eligibility category that VJ could play the KF Tour event is well down on the eligibility list (Category 19). For it to get down to that category means that many many currently exempt KF Tour regulars have decided not to play. Here is a list of the KF Tour eligibility for their events. Plenty of currently exempt KF Tour players have decided not to play this event. That's on them and not VJ. As Creedo77 noted in this thread there are other players that will be playing this event that are ranked lower out of the same category VJ got in on. https://www.pgatour.com/korn-ferry-tour/news/2020/eligibility-ranking-player-priority-reshuffle-categories.html

The KF Tour players have the priority in the situation you described. The reason VJ is playing this event is that many currently exempt KF Tour players are skipping this event for whatever reasons. VJ is not taking a spot for a currently exempt KF Tour player. Enough exempt players are skipping the event that the KF Tour has to reach further down their eligibility lists to fill the field. Here is the eligibility listing. Please take a look at it. 2020 Korn Ferry Tour eligibility ranking
