Almost Done For The Year??

Well I just broke out my winter shorts and polos. 😉 We pretty much measure our off-season in days or even hours rather than months.  In general we have 3 seasons: warm, hot, and very hot.  Just entered our warm season (mostly mid 70s to mid 80s).  We will get a handful of days with highs in the 40s and 50s, but otherwise it will be 60s, 70s, and 80s all "winter".

Also in PA, and can't wait for this time every year.  If it's above 30 and not windy, I'll play - and virtually no one else does.  Thermal underwear, layers, and a hot cup of tea on my push cart make for an enjoyable round.  And it's also damned cheap.  I only stop if snow stops me, though I do tend to play a little less than in the regular season.  Frankly, I don't think I'd want to live where you can play year-round in warmer weather, as I think I'd get bored and have to take a break at some point.  A season with no crowds and the course practically to yourself is much appreciated.

It was 77* F today, so I had to play. Only got nine in, course was packed. Had to park in the back 40. Had 7 pars, irons and putter were on. Putter was amazing! Had two really bad shots, but the rest were doable.

I could move right now somewhere to play year round. Two of my kids agree, one for golf and other for soccer.

Great round Saturday morning, few degrees above freezing, we were the first 2 out, walking, finished in 3:30 not rushing at all, and none of the cart driving groups behind us even came close to catching us. Wasn't windy, wasn't soggy, no mudballs or muddy feet. Perfect really.

2 and 3 fairways are a swamp. Glad I had a cart yesterday, but I was worried about getting stuck. I might play today, I want to while the sun is still out.

It is the wet season in Portland, so it's to be expected.

I'm in Chattanooga, TN. I played 18 in a cart on Sunday and walked 9 yesterday. Both days it was about 55-60 with a light constant breeze. I didn't mind the weather, especially because the sun was out. Just gotta remember some chapstick and layer up a bit.

The real issue is course conditions. The greens and tee boxes are still okay, but the fairways are about half dormant. When the Bermuda grass goes dormant the roots don't absorb any water, so there is a layer of mud along with the dry, wispy turf. It's far from ideal.

Around here most leagues and lowballs will swap to "winter rules" which include rolling the ball in the fairway to find a playable lie. Some will consider wet bunkers as unplayable and offer a free drop as long as the bunker stays between you and the green.

Pretty soon the temps will take another leg down and the wind will blow a lot more and there will be far fewer days when playing or practicing seems like an appealing idea.

In the Texas Panhandle, when it gets warm in the winter, it usually is windy.  Not amateur windy, but hardcore.  I'm 70, probably not going to make the tour, cold makes me hurt, so, it will take a special day.

I went to law school at Texas Tech and remember those winter's.  That wind seemed to last until the spring planting season and then it got worse!

I am playing every dry day I can this winter. The club owner said there were a few days last year where the snow was too much. But it's open year round, so I'm game. The drive is sketchy if it gets icey.

What part of PA you from?  Chambersburg here and I have a tough time finding hard core buddies.

I'm in Mechanicsburg.  I actually used to play with a few folks from Chambersburg (one of my wife's best friends lives there), but they get the tee time books and like to ride, and since I like to walk and am a senior, I don't get any benefit from those books, so I just started playing more around here.  Play quite a bit in the Carlisle area (barracks, Mayapple, Cumberland, Eagle's Crossing), and don't mind traveling from time to time (used to play a lot in Gettysburg when I played with the Chambersburg crew (actually playing Flatbush Friday)).  If you want to try to get together, drop me an email ([email protected]).

Wow, small world and glad I asked where your from in PA.  Carlisle is probably the sweet spot for us too.  I play all the same courses you meantioned and many more.  We usually play anywhere within an hour plus of Chambersburg.  As far West to Bedford, North to Lebonan, East to York and South to Fredrick.  We dipped into the Virginia and West Virginia courses when COVID shut PA & MD down.

A buddy and I just bought a membership at Gettysburg National formerly known as Mountain View yesterday.  They have an amazing deal goin on right now, 2 year membership for $398 plus tax.  Membership covers the green fees any day any time.  Cart fee is $14 for 18 holes anytime you want a cart.  Only time carts are required is on the weekends and holidays before 11am.

I’ll drop you an email with my cell number so we can try hooking up thru text.  I’m a working stiff yet so it’s pretty much weekends only for me until the days get longer.  Then I’ll be banging out weekday rounds at Gettysburg National trying to get my $398 worth of membership.  Still plan on playing the other courses on the weekends cause I love variety in my golf.

Just happened to be closing down for the night when your post came through.  Had no idea Mountain View changed it's name.  I enjoy that course but don't play it often, so probably wouldn't get my monies worth if I joined even though that is one tremendous deal.  I probably play the Carlisle Barracks the most because it's always in great shape and relatively inexpensive, especially since I worked for DOD.  Normally I'm not a big fan of weekend golf because of the extra expense and additional crowds, but this time of year, it might not be bad.  I typically like to walk and play from the whites (not because I'm any good, but because I just like the challenge more), but I'll play from any tees (I mean, I'm not looking to be known for my golf scores).  Will look for your email.

Carlisle Barracks is or at least was a hidden gem.  It’s starting to get more traffic but always in great shape like you said and totally walkable.  We might have actually played together already if your one of the two walking guys a buddy and I joined on hole 3 earlier in the year.  I recall the one guy saying he worked for the DOD so I’m betting it was you and we played together.

It's definitely getting a lot more play, so no longer hidden.  I can't recall joining up with anyone there this year, but that doesn't mean it didn't happen.  A lot of people who play there worked for DOD.

Played today, a little chilly out there this afternoon, but nothing unbearable if dressed appropriately.

Took a “short” bag, and carried. I usually use a push cart, but found carrying keeps me a bit more warm.
