Tommy Fleetwood to TaylorMade

Recommended Posts

Is it possible to think he signed a 4-5 year club deal with Nike that will finalize at the end of 2020.  Tommy may have been enjoying the extra payday with the freedom to experiment.

Who's their big name English staffer right now? Do they have a top level european tour player currently?

Wonder if fleetwood's deal includes any backend dollars on product sales increases in Europe.

Anyone remember the deal baddeley got with McGregor way back in the day? IIRC, he had exclusive distribution rights for product into Australia. Not saying TM and fleetwood did anything close to that. Just reminiscing on how old I am that I remember that stuff.

Met badds in my gym here in Orlando back around 2003ish. Looked at him and said "badds.com huh?". He smiled and said "you a goalfer?".

Anyway, so, Fleetwood and TM, pretty cool huh?

Abraham Ancer had a similar deal with Miura in Mexico

When I think of Tommy Fleetwood, I always think of Matthew Fitzpatrick.  Fitzpatrick is 3 years younger than Tommy but they both have 5 European Tour wins.  Tommy is a strong player, but in terms of marketability and visibility, Tommy did himself a great favor growing a beard and letting his hair grow out.  Sponsors are paying players for the amount of time they can be on screen, which is why Michelle Wie got paid A+ bucks with a C+ playing resume.  But I sometimes wonder if Tommy were to shave, cut his hair off and play the same way, would his price go down?

I seriously think you may be on to something there

Spot on man. I think of Tommy Fleetwood as the English Ricky Fowler. High level of visibility due likeable personalities and great hair. Both have single digit pro wins, a handful of 2nd place finishes at majors. Both are very particular about their clubs and always have interesting WITBs. Great players in their own right, but rare for guys to get camera time and media attention without being at the top of the leader board and/or a dominant resume. If Tommy were to cut his hair and shave he would be running on personality alone. Plus nobody would recognize him.......

Tommy is a pretty smart guy. It also helps to have one of the nicest looking swings on tour.

Fleetwood by all accounts is a super nice guy however I don’t see him as a high profile player. His tournament results don’t put him in the same bracket as Rahm.

I talked with Fleetwood at the British Masters years ago during a weather delay. Just a regular guy. Not up himself. Fantastic personality and a great player. Just needs a major to make him a worldwide household name.

Matthew Fitzpatrick is the "poor man's" Tommy Fleetwood 🙂. His swing and ball striking are not as attractive as Tommy's.  But Matthew gets the job done in terms of winning.

Good point, everyone needs their “angle” to make themselves marketable. And if Fleetwood cut his hair, would he still be able to walk on water hazards?

As reported by TheEquipmentJunkie on Instagram who broke the Rahm to Callaway news. TaylorMade has signed Fleetwood to their roster.

Of course the did.  They have his clubs.  The P7-TW is a Nike VR Pro knock off.  Wish TM would make their blades in lefty!!!!!

Any idea what Tommy's upcoming schedule is?

Maybe he has some time off to test and get comfortable with new equipment, but I just found it really weird to announce this literally one day after he was playing Titleist's driver, woods, and ball, Callaway wedges, and an Odyssey putter. The only TM clubs in his bag were a set of blades that surely won't be publicly sold (and maybe a 7W?). That is a lot of change coming.

If we take his current bag setup, my guess is we'll see Fleetwood rock:

Driver: SIM 2.0 or at least his old SIM until he gets dialed in

Fairways: His trusty M6's until he gets dialed into the new SIM 2.0 range

Irons #1: 4/5 P7MC perhaps, though the MC doesn't have the forgiveness his Srixon's did and wouldn't blend as well into the TW irons.

Irons #2: 6-9 still in the P7TF. Maybe we'll see him in the P7MB's since the MC's will blend better for his longer irons. But he also doesn't seem to care too much about what blends or not given his Srixon/TM combo

Wedges: MG2 48/52/56/60, maybe even TW's in the 56/60. Doubt we'll see him use any Hi-Toe wedges.

Putter: Probably contractually obligated to try the Soto/Juno in a similar slant/flow neck for a while instead of continuing to the rock the Odyssey. It'll be one made for him, in black, with a white sight line. Should have no trouble transitioning IMO.

If I remember right when Nike scrapped golf clubs they honored the remainder of everyone's contracts to keep them in Nike clothing. No pay cuts for anyone even though the deals were originally for clubs and apparel...even Rory's $220 million jack pot. That's why a lot of those guys took the opportunity to be free agents from a club standpoint(Koepka, Reed, Fleetwood, etc.). I don't see Nike dropping any of these guys either considering their performance and visibility still being top notch in the golf world.
