for chip or pitch shots do you choke down always?

I don't on a pitch, I like to feel the weight of the clubhead, I will if the ball is above my feet sometimes.  .  For low running chips where I am using a lower lofted club I will choke down some and use more of a putting stroke.

Sorry going to re post.... Bought an ES14 during the whole COVID lockdown,  came up with a personal method and been using it with GREAT success.

3-9 swing (shaft parallel) ,  LW to PW (so 4 clubs)

Ball middle of stance - Full Grip

LW - 40y

SW - 50y

GW - 60y

PW - 70y

Ball middle of stance - Grip down to steel (minus) - 20y

LW - 20y

SW - 30y

GW - 40y

PW - 50y

For me, with a middle ball position,  Changing the grip position changes the distance about 20y.  consistently.  Now say I wanted a 5 yard gap, I would move ball position around. forward of stance or back stance,  forward of stance would just increase loft and launch reducing spin a little. ball back of stance would decrease loft and launch adding a little more spin.

I now have a 3-9 swing with 4 clubs and basically 15y all the way up to 55y covered, in 5 yard increments with a single swing.  Just changing grip position and ball position.  I also now have different trajectories and spin reactions based on the above swing I dont have to swing different at all. So its a simple method to hit specific distances.

This is how I use choking up on a club to my advantage.

Very interesting.

I'll have to try your approach.

I’m not a big believer in choking down.  Causes posture problems in a lot of golfers.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

I probably grip down an inch for chips & pitches but no more really.

I want to feel like there's enough room to turn the body & release the club through the ball, I lose this feel completely gripping down the club

I don’t think I consciously choke down. Maybe only for really short swings or if the contour and stance dictates it.

Chipping and pitching is so feel based. I would rehearse practice swings behind the ball to get my low point and bounce right for the shot. Whatever stance and grip gets me to barely brush the ground behind or at the ball is what I will step into the shot with.

Typically, I have always choked down to the bottom of the grip for chipping or short pitches. As I am analyzing my chipping shanks that have recently reared it's head, I realized I was choking down too far and addressing the ball to close. My hands were almost touching my legs which gave little room to come back through the ball on the downswing. Because of this, I was bringing the hosel closer to the ball at impact. I think choking down about an inch may be my sweet spot.

Yes but not always. It's more of a distance control or uneven lie sort of thing.

Same here.  Always situational for me as well.

Normally, I grip the club about 1/2" down from butt and use the align feature for full shots.  However, my shot plan dictates where I grip the club, which might be down as much as 1-2", even how I may grip the club.

How = two "2" different grips.  Full-shots I use Vardon grip.  But for a shot where I want to control trajectory, and most pitches and all Chips and putting, I use the Reverse Overlap grip.

Tidbit: the best way to control little pitch shots and chip shots, regardless of club, is identifying where you want to land the ball, read the undulations from there to the cup.  Then, the nature of the Reverse Overlap grip is, it makes the right hand dominate.  Then imagine throwing the golf ball to your target landing spot underhanded.  It also takes the flippy, weak wrist out of the shot.
