Since this is an invitational with no alternates, no Monday qualifying, etc - if he had not played I think there simply would have been one less player in the field, the “spot” would not have gone to anyone else, right?

the Masters is also an invitational event and many players have a lifetime exemption but are no longer capable of posting. a decent score....just because you can doesnt always mean you should

Yeah not necessarily disagreeing with that, but when talking about “waste of a spot” that doesn’t really apply if the spot isn’t going to anyone else. Hence my question about this event - if Gamez had stayed home would someone else have played?  I don’t think so but I’m not sure, so I asked.

Yea, but I mean I dont know the "rules" for the tourney regarding if Gamez didn't play does someone else get in; but the ppl running the tournament could have invited someone else if he didn't play. They make their own rules, just give someone else the spot. They won't get arrested. They already "wasted" a couple other spots on some guys who prob shouldn't be there (Kamaiu Johnson, John Augenstein, heck Rod Perry got as a past champion I believe), why not give it to a local kid or college kid or something. Maybe Gamez needed some cash?
