New Trend: music on the golf course

Recommended Posts

Playing music and playing music so loudly that other groups on other holes can hear it are very different things. My group generally plays music but we do so in a way that it isn't loud enough for anyone not standing near our cart to hear it.

When playing with someone we don't know we also ask them if it's okay to play it and when they are teeing off in an area where they can hear it we will turn it down even if they say it isn't necessary.

And here we have the “the way we do it is ok though” point of view.

Welcome to another episode of most divisible questions ever, where everyone thinks only their answer is right and everyone else is wrong.

I probably made these statements in a combination of every time this topic is started, but I'm bored at work so here we go.

My regular group 4-8 people listens to music. Is it too loud? I don't think so, no one has said anything from an adjacent hole or anything. On the note of playing music if we somehow just have a twosome and we get paired with another twosome we don't even ask we just don't play it, seems like common sense.

On the flip side if you're a single paired with us, majority rules.

Any type of official tournament or something no music at all.

Yeah i'm not sure why this is so divisive. The above is pretty basic courtesy and true of anything, not just golf. What about having a picnic in the middle of a park? Do you play music? Some people do, usually they try to keep the volume reasonable as to not bother other people. Unless you're blasting something and forcing it on people, i dont see what the issue is.

If you hear something in the distance you can barely make out like one time in a round, if this ruins your day, you probably have some soul searching to do

I don't see many people saying things like "I blast music super loud so everyone can hear and they better like it!

But...if they’re playing and you’re just standing there...

I guess it is their fault.  They should just leave you standing on the tee box while you pout.

I am saying when I am playing... Could not care less if they play it when they are playing.

Get rhythm when You get the blues

jc

don’t mind it when it fits my swing tempo.

But tired ash eensi-weensi speakers trying to be loud just doesn’t do it for me.  Also wouldn’t mind hearing a new thing or three. I keep hearing what sounds the soundtrack from FM.

I am 100% OK with it as long as you can't hear it when you're away from the cart (hitting on a tee or on a green) if you have it that loud I feel bad that your playing partners are so terrible you don't want to be able to talk to them.

My brother and I play 99% of our golf together, and I've had to have him adjust the volume of it to the point where we can talk in the cart without yelling, but if we're just chilling there are some tunes in the background.

I never said either way was okay or not okay but golf courses do not enforce it and we are respectful of others... I guess we will ban talking, drinking, smoking cigars, and everything else that might be a mild inconvenience or viewed as "not okay" by a small group of people. Blasting music loudly is not okay. Comparing what I said to blasting music is like comparing apples to oranges.

The problem with any debate like this are terms like "Blasting music loudly is not okay."

What is loudly? Loudly for you might not be loudly for me ... anytime you get opinions involved, you get trouble. That's why there are hard and fast rules.

As I've said before - I'm mostly against it because it's always godawful boring dad rock.

You're aware of the demographic of this game, right? Largely played by godawful boring dads?

Wait... I resemble that remark!

I’ve noticed it on golf course and also hiking trails in the Rockies. It’s annoying on the trails, but at least there it keeps the bears away...

I absolutely hate it on hiking trails. For the folks that play it, I wish it would ATTRACT the bears.

-------------------------

For the record, I do not play music on the course. I enjoy the serenity of the game, and probably would object if one of my regular playing partners tried to start that--it's hard enough to get one of them not to talk during another player's swing. But I can't say it would bother me much encountering the random group on an adjacent hole with tunes. It's their course too, and I'm not so fragile that I can't block it out for a swing or two.

How do you know they can't hear it?

I was wondering why they feel a need to turn it down on the tee box if “ no one can hear it outside the cart”.

Edited to add...thus must be the group at my club the other day. Felt like I was at a rock concert when we were putting on a green about 60 yards from their carts parked at a nearby tee box

People who play music on the course also tend to be the ones that park their carts on the tee. 😉

Everything just comes down to respecting other people. Some guys know how to do that and others don't. There's a lot of rude things people do that have nothing to do with music...

Bring my wife to the club for lunch only to hear the table of 20-somethings at the table next to us talk loudly about how they want to **** waitress and what a dumb B**** she must be, hey at least they aren't playing music that would be disrespectful to the other guests

Bring my daughter to the course and have people saying every curse word in the book 5 feet away from her. Again, thank god it's not barely audible music, that would be rude!

We're missing the forest for the trees here. People who are d*cks will find a way to be d*cks

What kills me is how many people seem to truly believe that everyone else shares their taste in music.

Liked that 'hit em back' with bagpipes comment from earlier in the thread.  Gotta look into that.

I recommend you also look into polka.

So side note -- What are dad tunes in 2021?

I'm 39 so i like all kinds of music. I'll listen to new music, like stuff that came out this year....I listen to Pink Floyd or The Beatles or Van Halen etc...I listen to 90s stuff, like rap and all that

So like, in 2021 what is "Dad music"?

Like the Wu-Tang Clan was 28 years ago now (Crazy!) , That could be dad music, though i wouldn't think of it like that. Nirvana could be dad music, also weird.

Pretty sure anything that isn’t this auto tuned scripted studio garbage that they are trying to pass as music.  Just my guess.

I play all of my casual rounds with music on. I've got a JBL that clips on my bag if I'm walking, and a bigger one I use in the cart if I'm riding. However, I'm definitely careful with the volume and keep it at a level where I can only hear it while in the cart. If I can't hear it when I'm teeing off or putting, I know other people in opposite fairways won't hear it either.

If music is important to you during golf, you're allowed to wear bluetooth ear goobers so everyone is happy.

Those playing music don't want the discomfort of ear buds, so they bring their "bigger JBL" and make everyone else uncomfortable.

Reminds of high school kids that would drive around town, alone, in a grossly under-powered 1982 Firebird with T-tops removed and the Pioneer Sound System cranked.
