Well, I Played with/against Michelle down in Fla and up in the Burgh in 2012/2013, and while I wasn't in my "prime," as my best run was 1991-1999, when I floated tween +3.2 & +3.8 with back to back Clubs and a win over Duke Delcher(26 holes), 1997 Walker Cupper, in 1993 when he captained Oakmont's Inter Club team, in 2012 I was a solid and smarter +2.8 and upset Sean Knapp(2017 USGA Senior Am Champion & '18 Runner-Up, currently ranked 1146 in the world though in '12 he was ranked 478) in the semis of the Western PA Inter Club Match Play Championship(picture below) that autumn, and Michelle beat me by 1-3 shots a round as she Played the blacks/backs with us.

 

She hit the ball further than most Ams, including myself, taking it 3 bills+ 3-4 times a round when she swung for the fence. We Played 14 times and I beat her once by 1, we tied twice and she beat me every other time(11), twice when I was under par with 69's(Par 70) when she went 67, 68 and once over at Oakmont when I was even for the day(Par 70/Pro Par, member Par->71), Played much better than my +2.8 and she birdied 18 for a 69, lol. H*ll, two of those losses were at my club, where I went 69/70(Pro Par/70, members->71) from the BoBs(Back of Box, 7140-7150yds) and she went 68, 69, the first time that she ever saw or stepped on the course(We co-hosted 2003 US Am w/Oakmont).
 

As I stated earlier, Michelle always Played the same tees that we Played, including the US Open tees at Oakmont. A funny thing happened on the first tee over at Oakmont when a couple of guys were tryin to be chivalrous, as it was their first time meeting Michelle, and they offered her the Pro tees(blue), which at Oakmont are two boxes up from the Open tees, with black separating them. Without thinking, I blurted out, "are you guys f*ckin nuts???? She Playin back here with us,"😂😂😂." Though we had known each for a few years, Michelle didn't know me that well, however She cracked up and thanked them for their chivalry though said she was good with the back tees, lolol

 

Later addendum: As an add-on to the above Oakmont story, the one member was a good Bud and sometimes BB Partner, though I had met the other guy for the first time that day on the tee, with my reaction to his offering Michelle the Blue tees his first experience with my, well, my "on course" demeanor😂😂

 

He was a quieter, golf shirt collar turned up(which it was & I detest, lol), Docksiders/no socks kinda guy, lolol.  So after my comment, he saddled up to his fellow member and whispered, "he doesn't throw clubs does he?," 😂😂😂. Bobby assured him that I do not🤪, lol 
 

That said, Michelle ain't Lydia, haha

 

I'm thinkin MAYBE, if I Played above my cap, in my 2012 form and Lydia Played a "meh" or poor round, then I could get a win outa 10, MAYBE. If I Played with my 1990's game, yah, I'd take 2-3+ I believe. Someone like @isaacbm, if he's firin on all cylinders like he was last summer for a stretch, he splits with Lydia, getting 4-6, depending. The thing with guys like Isaac, they are that next level Plus, the "Elite" Plus, and I obviously put Duke, Sean and Nathan Smith at the level, and they have and always are capable of goin low, and I'm talkin big time low, 62-63, so he can put pressure on Lydia or Michelle, whereas with Plusses like I was before I got sick, they could Play Fairways & Greens, stickin some approaches, makin some putts, and they win. Well, Isaac and guys at his level, instead of Lydia Playin Fairways & Greens, she's gotta Play Fairways & Pins, you know what I'm talkin about Cards. That's a different game, takes it up a notch, and now she's got a lil pressure on her and she's gotta focus a lil bit, both with shots and putts. 

 

Anyone that's a competitive Plus, which You and I were, could get hot, though my later post circa 2000 game, I was more consistently solid than I was for throwing low numbers up. Obviously you know this from your first hand experience however most guys(98%+) cannot fathom not only how good a Tour Pro is, male or female, though more critical to this conversation, just how CONSISTENTLY GOOD that they are.

 

No one will beat a Pro with Pars, straight up or net, regardless of their cap!!! When they Play "meh" and even poorly, they Play Par golf, with the occasional one or two over. You gotta make birdies, whether natural or net, or you're goin home a loser. Did you guys hear me??? Pars ain't gonna get it done unless you're Playin with strokes, and you'd better at worst, par EVERY stroke hole!! EVERY SINGLE ONE!! No pressure there, huh😂😂??

 

Oh, you may get a hole or two here or there if they have a brain fart, however if you wanna beat ANY of these types of Tour Players, LPGA or LPGA, you've gotta make birdies, and quite a few of em, I don't care what your cap is.

 

The other thing that a lot of these guys don't realize or take into consideration is their mental state and frame of mind standing on the same tee next to a Lydia or Michelle Wie, especially if they've got potentially $1000+ on the table as Michelle did in four of those rounds in Pgh when she Played in our SWATs. This is not some sh*ts 'n giggles game for a 4~, even though it is for Lydia and Michelle, even with money on the table as it's not like standing next to your Buds or some other guy/Gal from the club, playin in the flight Championship or  playin for beers at the 19th. This will probably be THE most pressure filled round that 98%+ of any scratch to 4~ will play in their life time, so I'm thinking that that 4~ cap is more fantasy than reality, lolol🤪. For those used to Playing competitively against Elite competition, be they Am and/or Pro, even if they get their *sses handed to em like I did and guys at my level normally do(I'd get the occasional victory against a Delcher or a Knapp to keep me comin back, lol), it's no biggie, though as I said, for 98%+, it'd be the game of their life time. We're talkin elevated blood pressure, shallow erratic breathing, muscle tightness and twitching, yada yada yada and that club face moves just a smidgeon, and wala, bad things start to happen 😂😂😂.
 

Pressure will do that to a guy.

OK I’ll answer this for fun as long as no one holds it against me !  Damn you Richard! 
 

I think there was a time when I could compete with the top 10 players in the world at the LPGA level but not anymore. My current handicap range is all over the place...  I still shoot under 66 a few times a year. but also 76. I shot  62 in men’s league three years ago from 6600/72/137 so it’s hiding in there still but it rarely comes out. I also had a stretch last year where I couldn’t break 73 for 10 rounds in a row. lol ! 
 I think if all I was doing was golfing and not running a  business I could likely keep my card on the LPGA tour. But I wouldn’t be top 10 likely. But to be clear, that would mean getting back in the gym, practicing 2 to 4 hours a day and playing six days a week.  That’s what I was doing when  I was playing professionally. Or maybe I’m wrong and I’ll never be better than a +2 again.  All of this is purely hypothetical... 

 

Its funny how often I hear people talk about the advantage that a guy has over the women because of their distance.  At my current ability, If we were to play from 6000 yards my chances of winning would go up dramatically not down! From 7000 yards I think Lydia and I would be closer.

But that’s because I’ve always had a freakishly good wedge/short game . from 6000 yards I’d have 10 wedges a day and 4  par fives that I was getting to in two shots. 
     

  In 2013 I played four days in a row starting the day after the Dinah shore at the tournament course. We played the same tees under the same conditions. I was 7 under. The winner the week before was 15 under.  Granted it’s not apples to apples.  
At the time I was a steady +4.5.

now I’m closer to +1.

that’s why I’ve maintained that the best women in the world are probably between +4 and +5 handicaps (if they were ranked as men I mean not as women)

 

As far as playing for money goes though, most of the people I know with experience like myself play better for money not worse. That’s the biggest difference between a plus one that used to be a +6 and a plus one that used to be a 6. I’d take the former as my partner every time.

Right now I’d be pretty hard pressed but a few years ago I’d say maybe 40% of the time.

I personally know at least six members on this site who are div one college golfers whos handicaps would be close to plus  7 quite literally.

 

There’s another guy on this site to has won 10 professional mini tour events in the last two years. 
 

so I’d say there’s definitely a few people on here who I’d put against her.

I know some of these threads are written tongue in cheek, however, the premise here is absolutely preposterous! Not only that, it’s insulting to the talent, drive, and determination of one of best female players in the world. While many have been critical of her continual changes, those same folks, in all probability, have never competed in anything on a very serious level. Through all the struggles and changes, challenges, and spotlight/critical attention, this young lady has shown class and strength of will many will never understand. I was reading DJs average index between 2016-2020 would be +6.5. With a high of +8.2 and a low of +4.3 in that time frame.

I remember one year Bubba was 53 under the course rating for the week in one event. That’s four days in a row averaging 13 under. How could he possibly only be a +6?

Because he doesn’t do that every week?

 

I would be willing to bet that the +5’s presented by some posters do not have anywhere near as good an anti handicap that Ko would have. I believe I recall @Obeementioning this in some threads as well.

 

The very elite D1 would no doubt win a share but I believe Ko would hold her own.  Her scoring average has been below 71 every year going back to 2014…with half the seasons sub 70…..keep in mind she is only 24 now. When the D1 guys were in high school she was already averaging 69 point something professionally.

This is my exact point. Slope changed the way handicap is calculated. It’s a good idea when trying to balance out a 2 handicap playing against a 12  handicap in the club matchplay. It isn’t a good way of comparing how good a tour pro is versus a scratch golfer though. 
 

edit: What I mean is that obviously adding the slope system is a better way to create a fair match between players of different handicaps.

I just think as a general rule trying  to assign a handicap to a tour pro is often irrelevant.  At that level what is most important is their ability to shoot 4  low scores in a row.  That’s what really separates them from club players with a low handicap. 
    It’s better to shoot 69 4times in a row (week after week) then it is to shoot 76,69,62,76The  guy who shoots the latter 4  scores will actually have a lower handicap even though he can’t make a cut.
