How often do you change your putter?

Saltydawg15

Recommended Posts

Depends on the person, some haven't changed their putter in over a decade, some change yearly, some are putter hoe's and swap every round. No written rule, if you have confidence roll it, if you want variety do it, everything is up to you.

I have been using only my Toulon LV for all of last season and starting this season....which is a personal record for me.   I remember when the EXO 7s came out and I bought it start of the season, by buddy said "It will be in my bag before the Masters" and he was right, changed putters early in the season and he bought it LOL

I usually putt with the same putter for about 10 years.  It then takes me about 2 years to get used to a new putter. I only change putters when the current one has “worn out” which usually means that it has been bent, a very noticeable worn spot on the face, etc.

What putters do you use to wear out the face? Tiger said he hit literally millions of putts with his putter, and in the same spot, made a spot where everyone can see but it still gets used. I haven’t had a putter in the bad long enough to wear out a grip, never mind the face lol

I'm assuming inserts as they can wear quicker but a solid milled putter should be good for the average player and could even remill the face but you'll lose some weight doing that.

Only one, but it was a Taylormade Daytona Rosa with an ASGI+ metal grooved face. I finally wore a spot in the grooves.

Beginning in 1994, I have not really switched putters very often.

1994-2005 - Ping Scottsdale Anser (still have it)

2005-2015 - Daytona Rossa- wore the spot in the face and it took me 2 years and 3 different putters before finding the next one.

2017-present - Scotty Cameron - has a spot in the face, but not to where it cannot be played. The spot actually gives me confidence.

My current putter just celebrated its second consecutive month in the bag. That that’s a note worthy event pretty much says it all.

9 years with my gamer.. I take the button back out now and then, but my black mist gamer is starting it's 9th season.. I've only used 2 others before that starting in 1995..  I'll switch irons in the middle of a round.. but not putters...

I used a 1999 Newport Pro Platinum Mid Slant for probably 7 or 8 years, then embarked on a bit of a putter-ho adventure (compared to my usual habits) where I tried a 2012 Newport 2 (Black Mist) and a 2016 Newport 2 Notchback for about a year each because I preferred the longer and more squared shape and I did like the black finish. I actually most liked the head shape of the Notchback, it's what I had always wanted (a Newport 2 with extended bumpers), but I just couldn't get along with the bent shaft neck compared to the plumbing necks I was so used to.

Then the T22 lineup was announced and I snatched up a T22 Newport 2 that I've been using ever since they released. My Grandpa had an original Teryllium putter I always loved the feel of, but he's a lefty so I never rolled it anywhere but on a putting mat indoors. Now I've got the feel I love, a black finish, and the more square head shape I prefer so I'll probably keep using this putter for another 5+ years to match the tenure of the Pro Platinum that was my first "real" putter (one that didn't come bundled with a set of junior's clubs). The only change I can currently anticipate is if I ever found a deal of a lifetime on a CT T22, Super Rat II, or a Timeless. That said, the odds of something like that happening are slim and I'm quite happy with my putter for the foreseeable long-term future.

To often according to the Wife.

I admit to trying to solve my putting streaks with equipment and it always works, til the honeymoon ends.

An old Red X was added to the bag last week.   This putter has altered things from my old setup so the putter sits square.  Working really well at the moment, may windup being my forever putter.

I just switched at the turn today..

I got a new putter with one of those fat, big, bulky grips and decided to try it. I never liked those grips, but this was the biggest, fattest model (Super Stroke 5.0).

I couldn't get used to the feel, or lack of feel. It also got stuck going in and out of the bag, it drove me nuts.

I stopped by the car on the way to the 10th tee and swapped putters, one putted the 10th and 11th..

I had the original white hot two ball and after five years of playing four times a week the paint on the middle of the insert cracked and flaked off, but the rest of it was ok. The good news was it told me I’d been hitting the middle of the putter but the bad news then became it never felt right if it wasn’t dead centre and putts would go off at funny angles once the paint had broken.

Think this is a more common issue with insert putters as I’ve not had the same issue with my seven year old fastback.

Whatever is in the bag that day. Never have changed at the turn but wanted to a million times. All my putters have a short leash. They have been in "timeout" numerous times. But they are never abused and a 5-8 rd run is  average I'd say.

Funny thing is I roll it decent (6 cap) just superstitious I guess.

Every 1-2 years. Had the same putter in the bag from Fall 2018 through 2019 then switched to a different putter for all of 2020 that's still in the bag now, but not sure how long it will end up lasting.

I've read of a couple of pros that play Odyssey putters that have sent them in to have the inserts replaced as they developed slight depressions.   Of course those guys hit it in the same spot every time.

Those guys get it replaced, doesnt seem to be an option odyssey offers to the public.  There might be some businesses that specialize that could do it.

I'll add last year I acquired a lot of putters and to play them all I'd play a different putter every 9 holes or even a putter every 6 holes (I did this once) and at the end of the day I was never really more than 3 putt difference with every putter.
