How to dampen sound of G425

Just got fitted for the g425 LST with AD IZ shaft. I really despise the deep, clunky sound of this head, and it’s pretty loud. Is there anyway I can suppress the sound a little without adding too much weight? Maybe removing the 26g weight and adding 2 lighter weights? Hot melt? Any suggestions?

Have you hit the driver outside on the course or just in a hitting bay?  I think it sounds fine outside and I was playing a Mavrik Max before this. The results outweigh the sound.

Hot melt it and use a smaller back weight.  IIRC, people have said hotmelting right on top of the ping logo on the sole is the way to go....but you might try to verify that info yourself.

You could also cotton ball it, or yarn or whatever.  Easy way to kinda kill the loud sounds of the driver, and you can take it out if you don't like the sound.

Put in ear plugs. If you are having trouble with a hook, put a heavier ear plug in your right ear to slow closure of clubface.

I've hotmelted a ton of G425's in my shop which takes care of the high pitch.  If you don't have anyone local that uses real hotmelt I'm happy to help.

I’m wondering if just plugging up another one of those 3 holes with a lighter weight will make a difference? Like have 2 weights that add up to 26g.

It sounds worse with hot melt to me. It's like a softball bat

Not a fan of the muffled drivers like TM M6 or SIM, or the Mavrik. Had a Mizuno JPX 900 and didn’t like the high pitched sound. I love my Tour Edge EXS 220, powerful but not ear-piercing. Matter of taste. 
 

I almost tried cotton balls with the Mizuno but was afraid I wouldn’t like it and be stuck with it. No way back that I’m aware of, so rather don’t screw with it.

If you are doing a custom build through ping, you can order it with factory hotmelt and they will adjust the weights to get the SW back to spec

Yes, but they can order a new club custom from ping and request the hot melt.

It may be a difference in hearing but I do not know---- My M6 does not sound muted to me but I will admit it is not as loud as that old G1X Homna I have been playing the last 3 years. I will put this out there I know some balls depending on what someone is playing sound different. I have been hitting the Srixon Q Stars or Q Star tours with this driver. Have only been playing the M6 for a few weeks now.

I just kinda shove it through the screw holes where the weight connects (how I did it on the G410, I assume its the same on the G425).  The cotton ball you have to tear into smaller bits and kinda jab it through the hole piece by piece.

Stuff a cotton ball inside the screw port. It'll stick to the glue bad already in the head. I used to put them in my 2007 Burner TP drivers.

If you use yarn, how difficult is it to get out if you aren’t happy with the resulting sound?

Do not use cotton or yarn.

Dont use cotton if you can avoid it. Get polyfill (pillow stuffing) from a craft store the cotton balls can clump up and absorb moisture.

Apparently makes the head illegal in competition and just sounds like a band aid fix. I’m gonna experiment with cotton balls in my old driver for fun but when I order my g425 I’ll probably just get the hot melt and offset with lighter head weight.

Good point, by the point I get to putting something in the driver head its not a strong contender for getting much play anyways lol.

Cotton balls do make a difference. Put a link for reference. Remember the balls go into the weight port. They do on a Maltby driver I have.

Actually works but you have to go to a smaller ball mark.

I stuffed about 40 ft of $1.99 Walmart yarn into my G425 to get the s/w up to D5, it also helped muffle the alum bat sound a bit. After 2 rounds I didn't like the heavy s/w & used a thin piece of wire & bent a small hook to fish out about 25 ft to get the s/w down to D3.  Prefer the lighter s/w & it still sounds better than with no yarn at all.

 

Take a Hex key or Allen key & remove the plastic screw next to the shaft & stuff away, just don't get too carried away your also adding s/w to the head. 

 

The second pic is my garage engineered custom yarn stuffing tool, piece of solid strand wire with 1/8" covering removed, makes stuffing fast & easy.

Seriously though, a few reasons.  1. You miss an opportunity to dial in your driver and make it better by adding weight in a concentrated area instead of being limited by OEM weight ports. 2. USGA deems it illegal for play.  If those two things don't bother you then have at it.
