They would have played the event last year instead of cancelling it if that is there stance even with international travel being greatly restricted at that time & the R&A would still have got good crowd numbers for the week. With having one of the highest levels of cumulative excess mortality rates across Europe last year from the deadly pandemic it's not too much to ask for these cautionary measures to be put in place this year if it means the event can go ahead. If it adds additional pressures of a being called 'Champion Golfer of the Year' then so be it. I'll applaud the guy that handles the challenge best, no matter where they're from.

Very interesting read, thanks for finding that.

Fellow posters,

Please get off the Covid stuff. I have my opinions about what the R and A is doing, and what Her Majesty's Government is doing, but I care about the tournament more than this. If US and other foreign players complain and try to change things great, let them try. If they decide not to show up, fine, its being played anyway.

And yes, the players have a point when players and fans at the same outside venue are treated quite differently. So if it is that big a deal don't go and let the tournament be played with who is there.

I'm tired of covid getting snuck into every part of my existence that I care about.

Your whole post bout covid, yo!

🤣

No avoiding the discussion, event hasn’t started and this is all the media (and players) have jumped on so far.

It will settle down, I hope the players shut up about it but them complaining is the reason it’s out front.

Keep young Andy away from it.

What is the ticket protocol for the Barbasol?  I may entertain coming up to watch.

I don't see any restrictions on their website for tickets to the tournament in terms of numbers they are selling.  As someone in the education field, I was able to get two free tickets so I can take my dad with me on Saturday (not going Sunday because of the Open) and then I bought a day pass on Thursday.  Thursday/Fri tickets are like $30 each, Sat/Sunday are $40 each, and a week pass is $100.

For me, the big wild card is weather.  Every year they've hosted so far has had some bad thunderstorms.  If I remember correctly, they had to do a Monday finish their first year and then the last time it was held the tournament was shortened to 54 holes.  The early forecasts call for more storms every day after Thursday, so I'm hoping that will not occur but it is a concern.

If they show up and play the Scottish Open do they requirements lessen or at least be easier to handle going into The Open?

You’d think but honestly, over the past few weeks, trying to follow the requirements and what you should or should not be doing over here has become ever more complicated. The only thing you can guarantee is that whatever it is we are supposed to be doing this week, it won’t be the same in two weeks time.

Don't blame me, yo! I didn't start it, hopefully I finished it, since there are no covid complaints since my post.

On their YouTube channel, The Open has posted some videos about guys looking to qualify for the Open through qualifying. The first four videos have certainly given a pretty interesting perspective (albeit by the fourth video, it does become a bit repetitive). Pretty cool that one of the guys in the series made it through.

Absolutely! Thankfully, they had the good grace to only include Peter Finch and not Rick Shiels 😂

After the Open not being played last year (first time since WW2) it will be nice to see major golf back on UK soil. The weather will be a factor either way. It's has been really hot in recent weeks and this is a cool week but is picking up again by the weekend so either way its going to be a proper test.

As for the restrictions - Players have been warned about the strict protocols and from the R&A (But thats enough of that)

For picks I'm hoping for a English winner of course perhaps Westwood, or Casey's best chance. Bryson might try his power game so that is always a risk when OB comes into play on most Links style courses.

pardon the pun but I think it will be a real open tournament. Praying Tiger can recover so he'll be at St.Andrews next year only time will tell 🙂

really only one ob in play, on the 14th. Imo its super generous off the tee, the roster of RSG winners is not very impressive..

The average rainfall in June for the area around the course is 46mm. In the past 30-days they have seen more than double with 94mm of rainfall.

The weather forecast for the start of next week is for hot and thundery showers. Perfect conditions for the rough to become even more of a penalty that even Bryson may not even be able to get out of.

certainly, but unless its changed radically in the last few years its a wide, wide golf course. Not many bunkers in play off the tee either compared to other venues

The rough will be up this year since they’ve had more rain into the build up of this years Championship. Fairways will still have a bit of zip to them but I’m not expecting to see a dust bowl.

my early pick is for Van De Velde
