PING G430 - Are They Finally Going Back to a Carbon Fiber Crown?

BubbaBallesteros

I really like the muted matte black look of my G410 but the sound is.... leaving some to be desired. With a normal tour golf ball it's not too horrible but man at the range with those rocks they use, oof it can hurt my ears. I haven't felt like hot melting this head nor do I think it would help that much.

If Ping has made the same easy to hit, nice to look at but "muted" sounding head, I would be game.

Ping drivers seem to work just fine without any carbon. Finau and Champ nuke it off the tee and I cannot see how a head made of mixed materials would benefit them in any way? As for the noise I never take much notice as if the club works then it would be in the bag. And I wholeheartedly agree with GG194...those heads were loud but effective.

This is exactly how I feel.  PING and Titleist both keep up on ball speed.  Both sound fine in my opinion.  And both are two of the most forgiving drivers on the market.  So why should they go to carbon fiber crown?  There is no benefit.  PING just needs to keep doing what they are doing.

You are describing a Callaway Rogue ST Max.

I guess one example is that the G400 and G410 line of drivers were almost universally well reviewed, with the major complaint being sound/feel.

So what did Ping do…they made an even louder driver in G425! It would have been so easy for them to put a couple grams of hot melt in each head (like the tour guys undoubtably get) and adjust the back weight accordingly.

Maybe they are finally listening to customers / reviewers since they are putting hot melt (“EVA polymer”, lol) in each i525 head. I’m saying all this as someone with 11 Ping clubs in the bag. They just sometimes make it feel like taking foul tasting medicine that you know is good for you.

I still don't see how it's arrogant, as it might be if you had only one practical choice on what club to buy.   Obviously that's not the case.

I can see it a little more as a situation where they say that they can make 425 have better <some metric or metrics> but the tradeoff will be slightly worse acoustics.   And that's been consistent for them as they almost always prioritize the objective improvement over the subjective one.

I get what you'd like some subjective improvements.   I'd love it if their next driver kept its performance but felt like a TSi3, or the 525s felt like a Miz 221.  I'm sure they know how to do it, but also know the cost involved.  I don't always agree with certain design choices they made even if I understand why they made them.   Having dabbled in engineering for a few years, it's always about making tradeoffs.

Tweak some of the tradeoff levers and you get something like PXG.

My hope is Ping can reduce some weight in the head. Switched from the G425 LST to the TSi3 and have been happy with the change. That being said, I'm very much a Ping homer. The G410 and G400 were two of the best drivers I've ever hit. I was disappointed in the G425 driver line.

In regards to a carbon crown, I prefer titanium to carbon so I am not surprised there are big brands that are not transitioning to Carbon.

The bottom line for me is the G400/G410 are the best drivers Ping has put out. The G425 for some was ok, but a big miss for me. I prefer a muted sound, but the performance of the previous G’s was exceptional.  I feel both TM and Callaway have been able to increase the forgiveness and maintain the performance advantage over Ping drivers. Hoping for a carbon crown with Ping’s forgiveness in their next release.

I agree with the weight thing... to me thats the one downfall to the Ping drivers. Sound, turbulators etc I don't mind but that weight, for me, made any shaft (I play ventus 6x tipped 1.25") feel less stable than lighter head like Sim2 or PXG.

I just want to add some opinion, not facts to this conversation. You know... like most social media/online sites, Haha!

I love the turbulators solely based on how they frame the ball at address. Performance benefit or not, I just like how it frames the ball. Didn't like the sound or feel of either the 410 or the 425. I had hot melt put into my 410 and I hit it so well, there was no point going to the 425.

My wishes for the 430 (if that's even what they're going to call it): Keep turbulators, improve sound & feel and if they want to go Carbon Fiber Crown (which will probably improve on the sound & feel) I'm all for it.

Most importantly though... DO NOT CHANGE THE ADAPTER!!! I don't want to go through what I had to from the 400 to the 410...

Agree 100% on the adapter.  Ping is in its third version of the adapter.  Callaway is still on their second only (they get it right).  I love Ping but the adapter thing is a pain.  I have a couple G30/G/G400 (had a G30 and G400) shafts I would love to try in the G425 but can't until I get the adapters switched.

So many questions... if they're finally moving to carbon material in some area of the club head, what will the acoustics be like (arguably everyone's #1 con w/ Ping clubs)?

Interesting to see the TSR line move some model's weight from the center of the sole to the very back where the crown and sole meet, I'd assume to provide highest MOI and height. Here, Ping seems to approach it differently by having their largest weight plate at the bottom, granted, that's their LST line. Curious to see what their Max line will look like.

Although I'd love to test out the G430 line, I can't imagine that it'll be that drastically different from the G425 line, similarly between TSR and TSi.

The sole designs on the fairway and driver is somewhat similar so that 430 pic is a little telling. My last Ping driver that stayed in the bag for at least a season was the Anser and before that the Rapture v2 and G10 both with the stock diamana blue. TM has been so good with the 1st gen sim and stealth for me but always like to try a Ping driver.

True that, man. I can always distinguish a G425 driver without looking just by the sound. That thing sounds like Thor's hammer lol. I have the wood and hybrid and those are much better... well, I'm more of a shallow design and back weight fan which is why I like it. I, too, hope that Ping is indirectly addressing their acoustics with the carbon crown. But I know I'll be tempted to test it against a TSR driver lol
