Can't make a 18 inch putt?

Loki

Recommended Posts

What is wrong with Ryder Cup players? I just read about it but Westwood got all pissy because the Americans made him attempt an 18" putt? Boo hoo! Make the putt!!

When I play match play, I expect to HOLE OUT EVERY SINGLE ONE. Doesn't  matter if it is a cliff hanger or 10 foot.

Both sides, men and women, have complained about this "miscarriage of justice." Get off it. MAKE a MAKEABLE PUTT!!

One of my favorite things to say in match play is "I am going to have to have you putt that." When they hit it too far past the hole.

i think it is all relative.  On the greens those guys play, reading books, practice rounds etc. it is more gamesmanship than anything.  And all the guys that took offence used it to motivate them to winning.  Years ago CHIII gave Tiger a 3 footer in Tucson and the announcers went nuts.  After CHIII won they asked him about it and he said he didn't want to piss Tiger off.  He is right.  These are the top dogs of their sport putting on perfect surfaces.  The ring of friendship should be wider not smaller than our crappy outings with our buddies.

I agree. In match play, I think you always need to have it in your mind that you going to have to hole out everything. The gimme is always used as gamesmanship to needle a player. Then it won't bother a player if they didn't get a conceded gimme and won't take them off their game. However, I did think that Bryson's gesture of playing his putter on the ground because he was not given a short putt was super funny.

There are four people that you make putt every single thing that has daylight between the ball and the hole; Ernie Els, Adam Scott, Will Zalatoris, and Lee Westwood. Honorable mention for Rory given his occasional putting meltdowns.

The article quoted above is exactly the response the players should read. In my opinion, putting is what makes match play so much more interesting/fun/tactical and challenging. That and the playing in turn bit.

We play a lot of matchplay in my usual gang, and the gamesmanship we employ would make these pro's go crying to their agent and PR person. Our best matchplay guy in our group is an excellent putter - best in our group, and he doesn't give anything and doesn't ask for anything. A real mind**** playing against him as suddenly he'll give you a 3-5 footer if the match is tight (usually around the turn) which then breaks up your rhythm. No surprise he won the clubs matchplay tournament this year.

Poulter was making guys putt short ones a few times that i saw.

It happens--As others have said if you're worried about making it , it's not a gimme. And if it's an easy putt just make it and move on

I see far less "gimme" drama in the tournaments i play in than i do in Ryder and Presidents cups

I'll never forget Ernie Els at The Masters. That's what keeps playing through my mind when I see these guys complain about putts not being conceded.

Ernie at The Masters was brutal. What keeps playing in my mind on short missed putts was the 1 foot putt I.K. Kim missed at the Kraft Nabisco on the final hole, Scott Hoch missing a putt of similar length at The Masters and Will Zalatoris at the Open Championship this past summer.

Hochs missed putt is the first clip in this video.

With some of the putts he missed the other week when Cantlay won (among other times) I’d add Bryson for an honourable mention as well.

Phil M has missed a few shorties on his career as well.

I have a friend who seems to get mad about not getting a putt fairly often.  He will say that he is not giving any more putts today after not getting that one!  Then if he has a 6 inch putt and we tell him it is good he gives a very sarcastic 'gee thanks'!  Well he would be really mad if he did not get the putt!  What are you gonna do?  Just no pleasing some folks!

I lay awake at night thinking about that Zalatoris putt sometimes. This is a malfunctioning animatronic robot and you can't convince me otherwise.  😅

I agree that in a match you should expect to have to putt everything in to the hole. Expecting anything over a few inches to be given is unreasonable.

On the other hand, your comment I quoted above is pretty obnoxious. I’m very competitive and rarely give any putt over a foot in a tournament, but I definitely never would say that unless I was needling a very close friend in a friendly weekend match. Akin to watching someone hit it clearly OB and reminding them “you’ll need to re-tee that one.”

I understand why you would say that but actually, the comment can be sometimes and won't be at others. It all depends on the context and how and who I say it to.

To each their own...it really isn't that obnoxious.
