Martin Trainer from 2019-2022, played 79 events, made the cut in 13 (1 win). About $840,000 in winnings over that time, ($540,000 came from the win; $300,000 in all others). 

 

Might be one of the few tour winners who lost money playing the tour.

He made one out of the last eighteen cuts yet he continues to grind. (don't quote me)..... Matt Wolff should have a conversation with this player just to get some perspective. Wolff and Trainer are my favorite players for the coming year.....

Michael Kim may be another. He won the 2018 John Deere Classic out of nowhere by 8 shots. Check his career results from the 2016 season to date. Absolutely brutal outside of his win. Calendar 2019 to current is his most brutal stretch. 66 events played. 49 missed cuts with no top 10's, 6 W/D and a DQ with a best finish of T32. All per OWGR.

I remember that win from Kim.

 

I thought he could have had a decent career with that swing.

 

Amazing how someone's form can completely disappear after a win.

 

Darren Clarke after his 2011 Open win had no significant results, but that is slightly different from a young first time winner.

TBH Kim didn't have much form even before his win. At this point it's one of the most fluke wins, same as Trainers, on the PGA Tour for some time. Especially given the margin Kim won by.

Very true.

 

It just shows that all these guys are good and if they are fortunate enough to have a hot week, they can win.

 

It is like Steven Bowditch from Australia, 2 PGA Tour wins but most of the his other results are MCs.

Not sure Bowditch really fits the mold of Trainer/Kim as we know. Bowditch had some personal demons (clinical depression/drinking) and back fusion surgery that might have been the cause of his indifferent/poor play at various points during his career.

One of the par 4s - second shot is just under 100 yards, yet none of them are getting close.

Is that an uncomfortable distance for a pro with x shafts who can't swing slow?

Definitely on the back. Driver set up a sand wedge into green. Pin in front. I think there was a trap just left of the flag looking at it from the fairway. Maybe not a lot of room to land and maybe a slope behind flag. Don't know. Most of them were landing just deeper than pin high on either side and spilling out left or right. Maybe the flag was on a hill?

Don't know how close to expect a pro to get from 100 out, but feel like it's usually much closer.

Not sure which hole then, possibly 12 I guess. But this stat should given some context on expectations. With a field lacking most of the top players, I’d expect the act to be even worse.

Scheffler buckling under pressure. I don't know Trainer but it seems like he struggles to make a living on Tour and I am rooting for him to win.

Not really, which is the real genius of the course. There are no superfluous hazards and it’s pretty generous off the tee, so it’s actually not too hard to keep the ball in play and get around without crazy trouble. The green complexes are tricky enough that shooting a really good score is immensely challenging though. I hover around scratch and even on a day with tough conditions or where I’m not feeling it, I don’t go north of 80 from the tips. On the other hand, the best round I’ve had out of maybe 40-50 there is a 71.

 

The idea was to creat a course with a low maintenance budget, was playable for the local weekend warriors, but could offer a challenge for the pros. I think Doak really knocked it out of the park with that goal in mind. It’s not a top 100 course, but it is exactly what the city needed it to be and is a great model for muni golf nationwide.

At the end of every Professional Tournament they ask every winner what got them over the finish line and to a man or women they say..." I made some putts".....never once have I heard "My driving got me here".....The only stats that count is the ones coming down the stretch and the back nine on Sundays. Making key puts on Sunday is the most important thing no matter what strokes gained say. When they show highlights after the tournament it's always putts, never drives......there's a reason that there's no plaques on the tee boxes......JMO

Trainer is gonna go home and give his wife the second place business like she's never had before. Hopefully it's a good confidence booster for next time he gets close.

Was out there this afternoon, Kokrak hit sixth gear on the back while others gave up ground  , his driving was very impressive 

 

routing for List but the wheels came off his wagon

 

Course got some teeth after Thursdays  rain

 

normally Memorial plays 2 additional  par fives they converted to a 4s

 

#1 , 522 card number ,  tees up today bc of wind , prob playing 500 - 480 ish , couple groups had 200+ in 

 

#14 514 - moved up some , 500 ish 

 

beast holes esp into the breeze in Houston today 

 

10 under was a great Score
