Moving from Blades to P970's. Lazy?

After trying a buddies P790's I'm thinking of moving from Mizuno blades to P790's. I have plenty of distance and still play decent (4ish hcp) just figure I why not make golf easier. Am I just being lazy or are others doing this?

I ditched mizuno mp 5s and went back to the 63s, and now I’m waiting for my Taylor made p770s to get here.  No reason to punish myself with playing blades when these clubs are out there.

The 790’s come with dg105’s. Has anyone put something heavier in them? X100/px6.5 or modus 125x?

my son has the new 790's and i agree they are awesome.  however, i decided last fall my ping blueprints were just not forgiving enough and that i needed some extra forgiveness so went out and got me a set of new t100's 5-w and t200's 3-4 iron.  well after playing this over 100 holes ive decided good shots are good with either and bad are the same.  i actually hit the pings better with better dispersion.  thinking of getting mizuno mp-221 and trading in the titleist combo set.

I bet his scores do go down.  You barely miss the sweet spot with a blade your short of the green.  With a more forgiving club your on and putting for birdie.  As soon as I went back to my 63s my scores went down a few strokes.  Easier to make birdies when your putting instead of chipping.

It depends on the type of course you play IMO. As a 4 you are probably a decent striker, if you're hitting a lot of 4 and 5 irons i could see new irons making a difference. If you're mostly hitting 7-PW it likely won't change much

 

I don't think it's lazy, 3-4-5 irons are easier to hit with GI clubs...

doubt scores would move without knowing all the details, what would definitely happen is you will create gaps on either side of the bag specifically the lower end. But hey if you are a true golfwrx'er that's exactly what you want. Then the journey to fill them up will start. 2 wedges or 3 or 4 , is 20 yards gap ok etc etc etc etc :-)

Mp5s are soo forgiving in the first place as a blade. I love them.

Yep.  They are nice.  If they are lighter than what you normally play, could be a 'getting to know you' phase.

I have Titleist 620 MB, Mizuno 919 Forged and just got Titleist T300. As MTL alluded to, 7-PW give me the 620s or 919s all day every day. Only place I prefer the 300s is when I need 4 or 5 iron. 6 I can go either way. Feel wise there is no comparison. If I had to have only one set, it would be the 919s. Nice compromise of forgiveness and looks/feel/playability. Mizuno MB blades to 790s is a big jump. Perhaps the 770s would be something to consider.

Agree with score not changing much. It’s a regular talking point here. As someone that has MB blades and SGI I know. As they say, bad shots are bad shots. Do the SGI give me more on a mistake, yes. Does that mean the ball ends up where I wanted it? No. The SGI maybe save me 1, 2 strokes max. This idea of SGI irons being like a cheat code is IMO not accurate 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m betting a return to the blades vs the 790. 770 is whet I’d lean to if “wanting” to move away from the blades. Our son uses a 790 4/5 iron with his 730s and loves them.

... I just never understand this WRX logic. First, 2 shots per round is HUGE. It can be the difference between a 71 and a sub seventy 69. But more importantly I have always felt your irons should compliment your swing and while a really bad shot is a really bad shot, missing one a little toward the toe can mean the difference between being in the water or on the fringe. Need more height, more or less spin, miss on the toe or heel or are just erratic in your ball striking there is an iron that will fit your swing. Playing my Z Forged I know I lose a good 1 to 2 strokes per round because of slight mishits not really bad contact, swings or shots. My Cobra MIM's are just much more forgiving when I miss slightly yet give me all the control of my Z Forged. I play my Z Forged about once every 2 months to remind me why I don't play MB's and because they are also just fun to play. 

... I am also 69 and have shot my age too many times to count but would like to get back those 5-10 yds I have lost to Father Time. I have a set of the '22 Cobra Forged Tecs coming in April and really enjoyed my P790's when I played them in Chicago's soft conditions but found the hard fast desert greens needed more spin to hold them so I went to the MIM's. Ymmv ...

Of course you're not crazy.  Play what makes the game fun.  Heck, before I got old I was a +2 and now I'm playing hybrids in the 2-5 slot.  Life's too short, do what makes it more enjoyable.

I play for fun, not money. I’ll take the feel and appeal (for me) of the more traditional head over the 1-2 strokes. But that’s just me. And again, a true MB blade like a Z forged is an extreme example. I’m an advocate for an in between option like my 919 Forged. In closing. Play what ya want! 😊

Currently have Modus 105 so I am familiar with the weight, just wondering how they perform compared to those

My gamers are Miura MB-001s with Modus 125 S and I'm waiting on some P790s with MMT 105 S.  I have too many iron sets already (blades, players CBs, but no real GIs) and not enough delusions of grandeur so, simply put, just WRXing for more forgiveness and distance 😉 .  I'm not a tournament player and just enjoy the game and equipment in general so we'll see!

I play for fun too, and shooting my lowest score is the most fun I can have. 🤪  I was not advocating either extreme like SGI or MB and think most players can find something in-between that fits their game and their eye. But the coolest thing about this game is a myriad of reasons why anyone plays. From just socializing with friends and moving the ball out of divots or giving yourself perfect lies or even moving the ball away from obstacles to the other extreme of playing in competition and/or playing every shot as it lies ... there are a plethora of different clubs for everyone.

One and only one question. Do these clubs make you play better golf? If yes put them in the bag….. Anything else doesn’t matter!

Absolutely. On a par 3 for instance. I’d rather pure my 919 and be just off the green, than slightly mishit my T300 hear and feel the “ting” and be on the green. Like you said, we all have our reasons for playing this great game.

I disagree.  Would have been better off with a traditional blade like the MP 4 instead.  Worst set of irons I have bought.  The difference between my MP 63s and the MP 5 isn’t even close.  They feel the same and the 63 is longer, more forgiving, and straighter for me.

I would wager it makes the game harder for you. Less spin, lower launch. You will have them sold on the BST before you ever figure out your actual yardages

I also think scores won’t improve.  People who say mis hits will end up way short, maybe but that may be short of the deep bunker green side, where the forgiving club is plugged under the lip.  I’m thinking of going the opposite way.  I’m a +1 and got a set off Mizuno Pro 225s, thinking I can use the help.  I’ve played a couple times with them now and  I miss the thin sole of blades.  Stay tuned, they may be on the BST forum soon.

You're not alone, lots of lazy people, many don't have practice time, so they switch to more forgiving clubs.  More forgiving clubs don't necessary mean better scores though, or even scores like you're used to.  Difference might come down to how you deal with strong lofts messing with your ability to control trajectory, even gaping.   P970's look nice

 

Nowadays, I only play for fun and $$$.  That means using 620MBs to manipulate the ball in all direction's.  Damn I love this game.

I went opposite route.  I'm a 9-10 hcp and went from Zx7s to Ping Blueprints.  My good shots are much better with the BPs.  Only difference is the Zx7s are a club longer.  I shot my lowest round ever with the BPs.  I wouldn't say blades were the reason, but I do not see them hurting my game.  A bad shot is a bad shot regardless.  I personally just like the look of a smaller clubhead at address.

Wow lol its amazing different stuff fits different people better or not. Mine play very forgiving and accurate.
