Can a 4-handicap man beat an LPGA pro?

Recommended Posts

Wow. This thread still? Unreal...

IT'S HIGHLY IMPROBABLE, but yes if a 4 capper played from the ladies tees he could beat an LPGA pro.

However, over several rounds, the LPGA pro will have the lower over-all score. There's no possible way that a 4 capper will consistently beat one of those gals. Keep in mind, a 4 capper doesn't even break par. I'm a 6 and have never broke par.

I'm a 7 and have broken it many times on different courses.........................once was even when I was awake!

I would think that to be fairly unusual. Been playing with mid, single digit cappers for years and have never seen any of them ever even come close. One guy in our group is a 1 or 2 cap and I've never seen him do it.

Aside from a 72 at The Badlands about 12 years ago, the closest I came was in August last year. At TPC Las Vegas I shot +4 on the front and -1 on the back. That -1 on the back was also the first time ever that I've gone below par for 9 holes and it barely happened. Sunk a miracle put on 18 from off the green.

That was also the last time I golfed. I pinched a nerve on the course that day and it took me right out of the game. I'm still dealing with it. Not to mention that I now need surgery (again) on my right shoulder. Not sure if I'll ever actually golf again.

Whatever driver happens to be working at the time
Some random 3 wood
My same, old irons
A few wedges...

can an admin sink the mutha!

Who is forcing you to click on this thread? Perhaps you should complain to that person.......

oh dear the sensible police and his pals are here :superman2:

Sounded like a sensible question.

Why do you and others (Guia)want to end it. If it bothers you so much why open it? And then post in it. Some of us are still enjoying it.

maybe you guys are secretly enjoying it too, but don't want to admit it. So you post to close it so you still get notifications of new posts. That way you don't miss anything!

Whilst I agree, I do however disagree with your earlier statement about being unable to cope with the pressure of playing against a plus who plays for their living

Some who turn to golf may have done this at other sports: that is they have that particular hardened competitive toughness; so if Suzanne petterson is say a plus 3 , a hardened 4hcp with 7 shots may well beat her ( I know couple people i would back to beat her, with 7 shots of course)

Im speaking scratch, no strokes-

That's what I thought this whole thread was about-

Planting the tee and playing-

Head up, let the best Player win~

I haven't Played in a Tourney or money game where strokes were given or taken since I was a teenager, nor would I ever and sometimes it hurt me cuz even as a +2.8 I was giving up 2.5 to 3.5 strokes on paper.

My apologies if you guys are speaking of giving strokes-

Regarding taking 7 from Suzann, as I mentioned above, she went 7080yds+ in 71 strokes(Par 72) and I've never meat a 4~ that has remotely the mental game to Play a Plus or Pro, male or female, under pressure, unless they are a former Pro athlete, ie., Ben Rothlisberger or Mario, both former +.3 and Scratch(Mario), though both are presently around 3.7~ or 3.8~ and capable of going a few under if they get hot, however the biggest advantage that they have over they typical 4~ is their mental games.

Apologies if I misunderstood and you guys are speaking of giving strokes

Have a nice evening??

^^ You were correct, the whole thread has been referring to straight up.

PS the post referring a 4 being competitive if given 7 pops kinda proves the point of many of us.

No apology required, I just didn't explain myself very well. the thread did assume off scratch, but I thought that argument was settled long ago

I estimated the difference between a 4 hcp and say Suzanne Peterson as 7 shots; but even with 7 shots a typical 4 hcp would still struggle because of the competitive edge someone like Suzanne would have, but there are some 4hcps (like ex pro sportsman) who would not fold mentally and be competitive with 7 shots

I'll put money on the LPGA pro against ANY purported 0 handicap on this site over 5 rounds. Don't care about where you play and how far you hit the ball.

Your index comes from your best rounds...and that's only your best 50%.

So now the standard is "over 5 rounds"? You seem to be confused. The topic is "Can a 4-handicap beat an LPGA pro?" NOT "Is a 4-handicap a better golfer?"

At what male amateur handicap would you be indifferent between them and a low-end LPGA player?

You just don't get it. "Birdie" is a name for one less stroke than par, ok, and it isn't the only way to save a shot, so quit talking about it that way. If I move up, I can turn doubles into bogeys, and bogeys into pars. If I move back, I can turn pars into bogeys, and bogeys into doubles. It's a couple of shots either way, and the idea that a better player doesn't gain from moving up because they don't make a lot more birdies is silly math. A stroke is a stroke. That has nothing to do with handicaps; it has to do with what you shoot.

I don't think you understand math. It's not 'a couple of shots either way'! There is a hard cap of either a birdie or the rare eagle, you can't go lower than a 2, or the very rare 1 on a hole. However, if you take the short hitter and move them back on a long par 4, you can definitely lose MORE THAN one or two shots. There is NO UPPER CAP in stroke play.

Geek, what you don't seem to understand is that long courses eat 4 handicaps alive. They make them curl up into the fetal position, wishing they were never born. There's a better chance a 4 handicap will break all his clubs and throw them in a sink hole than break 80 on a long course.

Where your argument is weak is, well, the entire thing. 4 handicaps are horrible golfers in the world of professional golf.
