In honour of the new "WITB Time Machine", what's your WITB from 5 and 10 years ago?

....and more importantly, has your handicap improved with your newest bag?

10 years ago:

Driver -- Cobra Speed Pro S with V2 66 OR Wilson Spine with V2 HMOI 66 (won the spine in a contest and it was actually pretty good!)

Fairways -- Cobra Speed Pro 15 & 18 with V2 76

Hybrid -- Nike Sumo2 20 and 23 with v2 86H

Irons -- depending on the time of year I went sort of rapid fire after stupidly selling my beloved MacGregor NVG2 Mids with DGSL s300, then went Adams A4 with the same shafts and hated them, and then went to Ping G15 with stock AWT stiff, and then reshafted the Pings with GAT 95 graphite and finally settled on that I think for a season or two in late 2009 or early 2010.

Wedges -- Likely Vokey Spin Milled Oil Cans, but it might have been a brief affair with the Sonartec T35 that I inevitably got rid of quite quickly.

Putter -- Ping i-Series 1/2 Craz-E Belly still probably the best putter I ever used.

5 years ago:

Driver -- Ping G30 LS Tec with stock Tour 65

Fairway -- Tour Edge Exotics XCG 16.5 with Stock Aldila DVS 75

Hybrid -- Callaway X-Hot 19* with Stock 75 stiff

Irons -- Nike Vapor Pro Combo 4-A with stock DG Pro 120

Wedges -- Nike VR Pro Forged Oil Can (the original) 56, 60, I might have just made the switch over to the Nike Engage's (which I loathed in comparison to the VR).

Putter -- Depending on the time of year it might have been the Odyssey Metal X Milled #7, the Ping Anser 0 Milled, or some forgotten thing.

No, my handicap hasn't changed at all. Still firmly in the high single, low double range --- floating between 8 and 11. Go figure, I should really stop wasting money on new clubs.

The Weirdo 2024 Bag

Ping G430 Max 9* --- Tensei 1K Pro Orange 50 --- set to 7.5* at 45.75"

Taylormade BRNR Mini Copper 11.5* --- Diamana Thump 70 --- 44"

Titleist TSR3 16.5* --- Diamana Thump 70 --- 42.75"

Callaway Apex UW 21* --- Diamana Thump 80 --- 41"

Mizuno ST-Max 5H & 6H --- Steelfiber i95 Private Reserve

PXG Gen 5 0311T 7-G Black --- KBS $-Taper 115

Titleist SM10 54.12D & 58.08M Jet Black --- KBS Hi-Rev 2.0 Black 125

Bettinardi Hive Custom --- Stability Black

Callaway Chrome Soft X LS Triple Track Yellow; Lamkin Sonar Midsize + grips

Well let’s see if we can give this a go. I had a 7 year hiatus from the game and just got back into it 5 years ago. Handicap back in the day was probably 20+ but I had a crazy slice that I couldn’t tame. Here’s what I had then.

driver- Callaway FTI (yes the ugly square one)

3 wood- ??

hybrids- taylormade rescue 3 and 4

irons- callaway x20

wedges- Vokey spin mill oil can

putter- ping anser redwood

5 years ago was when I was just getting back into so was still about a 20 or so cap but the slice was tamed and scores started dropping

driver- ping g30 sf tec

3 wood- ping g30

hybrids- cobra amp cell 3 and 4

irons- ping g20

wedges- vokey spin mill oil cans

putter- Nike ignite ?? (No idea of model name)

since then everything is fitted and I’ve been addicted to the game. Cap is floating around 7 and slowly dropping.

My handicap has improved over the last few years. Hover around scratch depending on the streak. But that's from playing smarter, not really any better.

10 years ago I was 13, and my clubs were Callaway X22 knockoffs from china complete with Hyper X 1-3-5 woods

5 years ago I had TM burner plus irons in 4-A, my Stan Thompson PW, a callaway x 60° wedge, a dunlop solution hybrid, a Razr 15° 3w and rotated a TM R580 with a Hibore.

Today I have 2 sets of regular playing irons, Hogan Apex '99 and '03. Each set has it's own bag and the woods and such are different;

99'- 2014 Big Bertha Alpha, same Razr 3w, same dunlop solution, and Macgregor VIP black forged wedges.

'03- TM R15, W/S fybrid 3/5w, TEE XCG5 19° hybrid, and mizuno wedges.

Putters before the one in sig were non-descript... maybe cougar?

I'm a 6.9 cap now. When I was playing 10 years ago I didn't keep a cap, but if I did I would have been closer to a 20.

My bag from when I was around 15 stayed the same right thru till the last couple years when I've gotten serious about the game. It was as follows..

TM R580 10.5 with a 35g reg flex grafalloy shaft

Goliath 3 wood 15* stock shaft

TNT Gold irons 3-PW

60* Powerbilt walmart model wedge

Bullseye flange putter

And yes my play is greatly improved but much more a result of practice and playing often!

TM SIM Max 9*  Tensei blue AV 65-S

Mizuno ST180 3w 15* Tensei blue-S

Cobra BioCell 5w 19* Matrix RedTie-S

Ping G30 4h 22* TFC 419-R

Taylormade R-11 5-PW KBS Tour 90-S

I actually had the same bag 5 and 10 years ago with exception of the driver. I started really getting into equipment at the start of 2018 and probably gone through about 50 clubs since, ha.

Driver: Taylormade R540 then replaced by the Nike Machspeed Black (Round)

3 wood: TaylorMade Burner TI

4/5 wood: Some older one that said "Spoon" on it that was given to me by my uncle. Loved hitting that thing.

Irons: Mizuno MX-19 Hemi Cogs 4-PW

Wedges: Cleveland CG-14

Putter: Odyssey White Hot #1

I no longer own any of these clubs except the Mizuno MX-19 4 iron. Man those things were clunksters. I am currently gaming baby blades and its funny setting the 4 irons next to each other. Safe to say my ball striking has improved over the years.

Well this will have to be an approximation since every year i'll flip a few things.....But here we go. My handicap has fluctuated from +1 to 2.5 for the past 10 years at no real consistent intervals. Some years have just been better than others

This took a lot of thought. Ten years was a long time ago, and I had to think where I was working to figure out what I was playing. So, 10 years ago, my bag had the following: Titleist 907 D2 with Fujikura Z Com 6, stiff. Sonartec SS-03 14* with stock shaft, stiff. Ben Hogan CFT hybrid 2 and 3 with Apex 4 steel shafts. Ben Hogan 2003 Apex 4-E with Apex 4 shafts. Cleveland 900 54* (std bounce) and 60* (low bounce), both raw finish. Scotty Cameron Circa 62 #3, charcoal mist finish (carbon steel with a finish that still is intact!).

Moving up to 5 years ago, I had a very similar set: Titleist 910 F3 9.5, Ilima stiff shaft. Titleist Fd 13.5* with Ilima stiff shaft. Same hybrids and same irons. Cleveland CG12 54* with black pearl finish and Cleveland 588 PF 60* tour chrome, both mid bounce but special (personal, c-shape) grind on 60*. Same putter.

Been through a lot of clubs since then, though. 917 D3 9.5* with BB-5, stiff; 917 F2 16.5* with Matrix Ozik white tie, stiff; Hogan CFT19* from before and 818 H1 21* with Tensei Blue, stiff; short 'affair' with Mizuno split set MP 54 4 and 5 and MP 15 6-P with KBS C-Taper Lite, stiff, then Titleist 716 AP2 5-P, W with NS Pro 105T, stiff (occasionally a 716 T-MB 5 with NS Pro 105T, stiff). Vokey SM7 54.08 M grind, 60.12 D grind (ground closer to the M grind),all with NS Pro 105T, stiff; all with brushed steel finish and custom stamping.

Now TS3 9.5* with Tensei Blue, stiff; TS2 16.5 with Tensei Blue, stiff; same 818 H1 21* (set at 20*) and TS2 23* with Tensei Blue, stiff; T100 5-P with DG 105, stiff. Added a Vokey 50.08 F grind to the other SM7 wedges.

Putters have been from PING Karsten, Anser 5; Scotty Cameron Studio Select 2.7 (rescued from used club bin), and now Scotty Cameron Phantom 6STR.

Handicap has gone upward from maybe 6.8 to 10.0. Age, injuries/illness, lack of play/practice time are all factors here. It's not due to the equipment (I hope)

Actually honestly I think golf carts have gotten narrower in the bag area. And now days unless you have a SUV or pick up the trunk areas on vehicles have gotten smaller especially on import cars. No more trunks big enough to put Jimmy Hoffa and 6 of his closest associates in. Yep I still have 4 or 5 10.5 staff bags

As per @BIG STU on golf carts and trunks of cars: GolfWRX Warning... Do not buy a sedan unless you do the bag test. The mouth of the trunk should be big enough to accept a golf bag. Golfer should not have to spin it around in the air and half turn it upside down to load it up. The 46" driver shafts are among culprits; also I had to trim 3" off my alignment sticks!
How difficult it is to live in the first world!
