Looking for older or cheaper 3 Wood that is great off the deck/turf

I got back into playing recently. A neighbor gets clubs from older rich guys as he is military. He said help yourself so I got a set of Callaway Apex Forged Irons probably circa 2016. A bit better than my older Wilson Di7s.

I bought a new Cobra F9 driver which is nice. One of the old clubs I also got was a Callaway X 8 wood with a senior flex shaft - this is a circa 2006 club. I can hit that club great off the turf with lots of consistency. I have a nice older (small head) Yonex fairway 3 wood with a stiff shaft. When I connect it works well but I seem to chunk it. Also have trouble getting it in the air.

I usually play Callaway Super Softs golf balls or Wilson 50 Elites.

I am looking at a old Cally X 3 wood with senior shaft. $100 is about the most I want to spend. Thanks for any suggestions.

I was checking and my 10+ year old Yonex 3 wood is stiff flex. I am sure my swing speed is 100 or less. I usually go for regular flex. I got the Callyway 8 fairway wood with senior flex and it is super consistent off the turf.

I am in late 50's with still good swing range of motion. If I work on my fitness I can get my speed back up. I wonder if senior flex is the way to go. One of the UK Youtube golfers (so many) tested stiff versus regular versus senior and his distance was pretty much the same. He had to make some slight adjustments.

I went through this recently myself. I've been playing a TM R11s 3 wood for many years, which I'm pretty good off the tee with but no confidence hitting off the deck.

Was recently playing with some family members who were playing with rental Callaway clubs, which had I believe was the epic or epic flash 3 woods in the bags. I borrowed the 3 wood at the driving range to check it out, and I nailed every shot I hit with that club, tee or deck. Long straight bombers.

From that point forward I knew my next 3 wood was going to be a Cally. Not a brand I would normally look to, but I was impressed. Went on the Callaway pre-owned site and picked up an excellent condition epic flash sub zero for just a bit over $100. Should show up today or tomorrow, excited to take it to the course.

I'd suggest getting an adjustable 3 wood that you can loft up to 16 degree. I can hit a 15 degree 3 wood off the tee no problem, but always had a hard time off the deck. Got a Mizuno jpx-850, adjusted it to 16 degrees and now have no problem hitting it off the deck. The 1 degree of loft made a huge difference for me.

100% this. Easiest 3 wood to use off the deck that I've ever hit. Can probably be had for $25-50 bucks online.

Any of the recent Cobras with the rails. I play the standard F9 3 wood and it’s very easy off any lie. It’s a tremendous fairway wood. Sounds great too.

For older I agree on Adams Tight Lies 2 or the Callaway XHot2 Pro (smaller head.)

Some great recommendations posted, I’ll add a TaylorMade M4 3HL...basically a 4 metal at 16.5 degrees. It’s not as long as the Ping G it replaced but a better feel/sound and consistency. It’s bonded though with zero adjustability so better make sure you’ve got the right shaft in it.

I'm sure you can find a very good 3 wood for 100$, try M1 or M2 those are very good, or look at Callaway or Ping older models.

Anything in the Ping K15 series. The most under rated clubs ever. The 16* 3 wood and 19* 5 wood are super easy to launch off the deck.

Callaway XR (2014/15) is an excellent club and certainly within your budget.

if you don’t mind good tech regardless of the release date. I would suggest the diablo octane woods or any of the callaway offerings 2012-15

cobra woods are good as well.( I take divots with my woods and I don’t mind the bafflers rails as I do get steep time to time (get too eager to execute the best shot! ? )

The Titleist 913F2 or 915 F2 versions fit that niche pretty well and can easily be had used in the price range your looking for.

Will start with go with a 4/5 wood if you want a smaller head and easier to elevate. With that said, as others have mentioned, Titleist 915/917 are easy (tho I played in 16.5*), Adams TL/TL Tour/Titanium can all be had for peanuts. Was a huge fan of the XHP/XHP2 heads.

This is the answer. My girlfriend has one and hits it off the deck easily every time.

Try Callaway Epic 3 wood and loft it from 15* into 16*. You can find great deals on Callaway Preowned website.

Any M1/M3/M5 model. Cobra Fly-Z+ was awesome too

As we get slower in our swing speeds, we need more loft. OP, go with a 5W! G25s are very easy to hit off the deck.

Easiest cheap 3 wood off the deck is the Callaway XR16 (non pro). Low profile and hot face. I still have mine and would have no problem gaming it today if I had to.

I have an old Cleveland Launcher Steel 3W that I refuse to get rid of just in case I lose my ability to hit my current 3w. Such a great club.

M4 HL is veey easy to hit off any lie, launches super high, is long and can be had for about 50 bucks

The basic premise of this threat keeps popping up every couple of months, I would wager hitting a 3 wood off the deck is one of the most difficult ball striking skills for an amateur golfer to master.

Anyone who struggles hitting fairway woods off the deck consistently owes it to themselves to try a Cobra model with baffler rails.

Just also buy a roll of lead tape and you can fiddle to your heart's content.

I did this over the winter and found both a barely used Ping G 3w and a Callaway Steelhead XR 3w for around 100$ each....hit the Ping G okay but can't say enough good things about the Steelhead XR - off deck or turf...trimmed 3/4 inch off the butt and it's an in the bag keeper.
