The G.O.A.T Putter by theputtingengineer

I’m not saying it is magical, do you agree that stainless steel is made up of a mixture of other materials ?

If so then depending on how much of each material will depend on the hardness of the steel. So all I’m saying is that before we had EN numbers on things every country had their own standard for materials, this is the old German standard for stainless steel. > @cforselius said:

Just plain, regular Stainless steel. Not something magical worth markering except for people who dont understand what I just stated. Kudos for Scotty keeping the hype and making it legendary in this business, but for these guys saying how tough it was finding GSS is pure bullsh*t.

The thing is I’ve really wanted a Scotty Cameron Newport Two in material like this for years, but at $8000 it’s a rip off, so others are now making the same putter made from the same material for a reasonable price.

SU303 is SU303 whatever standardization it falls under.

There is a percentage of tolerance to the various materials in the makeup that some marketeers like to play with in their advertising to make people think something is better than something else.

The history of fine German cutlery and surgical tools lends perception that German stainless steel standards lead to steel that is somehow better. It isn’t. All 303 is going to be the same to anyone using it or machining it. The differences are so small as to only be found in laboratory level deconstruction and metallurgical analysis of a sample, and even then, those tests will all come up with the same result. It’s all 303.

Marketing works for as many people as it works on.

Also 303 is utilized because it is the easiest of the stainless alloys to machine and work. There are better feeling steels out there and better corrosion resistant steels out there but they’re harder to work with. It shocks me people will pay $8,000 for a block of 303 some dude worked when the other half of that same block of steel could very well be used to make a $25 putter head and as a consumer you’d never know it.

I think we can all agree on one thing here:

400$ GSS putter = WIN

$8000 GSS putter = FAIL

I ordered one too. Comes soon. With 3D CAD tech those machines used to be 90k... now you can get one for I believe under 2k... which makes it possible to make a good quality putter when milled. I’m excited to get it and will send it off for some handwork and rebuilding with YSC shaft.

> @D_iGital_pUnk said:

> The reason I've pre-ordered one is outside of the marketing bull****, patents, and debate over the legitimacy of GSS, its a nice looking putter made by a person who is clearly passionate about golf - end of.

Beauty, the softened version with a vapor mist finish definitely checks all the boxes design-wise, no matter what anybody says.

Putter looks nice finished. You could also find a Studio Stainless NP2 as pictured earlier, I’ve owned a 33’ 350 for years and she still looks new! This hubbub about GSS is pure snake oil. My Cousin has owned a tool & die for 40yrs and he gets a good chuckle. BB

As a lefty, I snagged one of these for a couple reasons. 1. I'm a huge Cameron fan, but the likelihood of me ever finding an actual tri-sole Cameron, this clean, no interchangeable weights, and just a sight dot.... it'd be about a .01% chance and cost about $10,000. As a life long massive Tiger fan, to snag something like this, was a no brainier for me. I received mine the middle of last week and it sets up / feels as good as any milled SS putter could. I don't change putters often, so this will be in the bag for a longgggg time.

Unfortunately, SC won't release a NP2 solid head without one....

Rob,

Mate, GSS is indeed an Acushnet trademark. Years ago I found it in the US register and posted the records in GolfWRX forums plus here it goes again directly from USPTO. The acronym only is the trademark, not the meaning. It could be German St. St. or God’s St. St. or Guangzhou St. St. lol, only SC may know the formula or exact type. So that’s why it is marketed as GSS because German St. St. is a generic name not trademarked.

The putter world understands GSS as German St. St., and undoubtedly is more valuable than using American St.St. or even Australian St.St. Could you imagine those bumpers with such acronyms? ?

^ That's why I love on the swag putters when they put "feelsgood 303". Your 303, my 303, their 303, its still 303 meeting the same requirements and quality assurances.

Thanks, about as close to real as I'll ever want to get. I did have a Byron 612 made in it's likeness for about a year, but the shape/offset was wrong and I couldn't pass up this perfect design. The sale of that putter and pickup of this one netted profit on my end too!

Feel is great if you like lighter putters, but I think he's releasing a 350g version now or very soon. You might be out of luck if you want an OG 326g head, so you'd be best to email him.

This thing is the real deal, feel is phenomenal and the fit & finish is as good as anything I've ever seen. There's an undefinable feel of center impact, very soft feeling, almost like a muted white hot insert. I guess that might be considered buttery. The only observation I can make about its functionality is that like TW's, the face height is less than avg, so if you contact the ball with the sole on the ground, the ball hits high on the putter face and makes a harsher thud, that is definitely undesirable feeling. I have a slight hunch it may also be partially why RF hovers his at address.

This putter is worth every single penny I paid for it, I have nothing bad to say whatsoever. Bravo, well done sir. This a completely unbiased, unsolicited review.

Last little bit, I finally thought of a good feel comparison. Center contact has a very similar feeling in one's hands to a nutted drive, where you can seemingly feel the compression and nothing else.

If the concept is to "duplicate Tiger's putter" then 350 grams is way too heavy of a head. My understanding is that Tiger's famous putter specs are 318 gram head, 35.25" length, 52 gram grip, D2 swing weight.
