Saw some new Callaway Woods last night (The Epic Thread)

Recommended Posts

Just found today out a buddy of mine is going on the epic journey. Lucky B@stard!

He is one guy I know will give everyone an impartial view. Dude has had every oem in one of his bag slots before.

Can't wait to hear all about it.

I concur with some of the MOI comments and raised something similar very early in the thread. Clearly the jailbreak does something for ball speeds off the face but I hope that the overall CG is still low and back.

As the primary stress on the jailbreak bars would be tension, some very light materials could be used.

I'm guessing the tech story will be that the carbon fiber on the sole freed up enough discretionary weight to keep the sliding weight in the rear, while also placing the bars behind the face without causing a forward shift of CG. Thus adding the benefit of jailbreak technology while keeping MOI similar to (insert previous model Callaway driver here, probably GBB). Look ma, no tradeoffs!

Rumor mill says the sliding weight on the track on the normal Epic is going to be heavier than the previous GBB.

Help get the ball in the air more if the jailbreak brings down the spin?

Do any of the folks who are trying to figure out why this driver is so good have any thoughts at all that this might just be another driver and will not be special at all.....Not bashing it or any of the posters....... I have never seen it and am sure i will try it, but even here on WRX, I have never seen a club hyped so much, by so many, after being tried by so few.

Edit.....I do respect the opinions of those who have hit the epic and provided info.......I hope i find the same to be true.

I don't know. My pro has said he's never seen a driver perform like this. His words is that it's the most "Badass driver he's ever hit." He played on the old Buy.com and teaches now. He's a Titleist guy and was VERY impressed.

Of course. Until I have actually tested it myself and seen the ball flight and positions I drive it to on my home course then I am assuming that it is just the same as every driver.

I also think it is highly likely that when I am finished testing I will find it is no different to my current driver.

That is my starting point with all clubs which means I am rarely disappointed.

Not surprised if he's a Titleist guy. They've fallen behind the other major OEMs in driver tech.

So, I did hit the EPIC drivers/fairway woods, the new forged wedge and the O-Works putters while the Callaway rep was at our club last week. I'm def. intrigued by the tech. behind "jailbreak", but do I think the result was jaw dropping?? Without L.M. numbers and taking it on course, absolutely not. I can only say it felt great off the face and I love the sound as well.

and FWIW, I didn't care for the new forged wedge, look awkward at address, putter is great but I don't think I'll change my one-off OVEN putter anytime soon.

I think we all know to take the reviews on the latest and greatest with a grain of salt, but this club thus far seems to have more momentum, and consistently for multiple sources saying similar things. Could they all be wrong? Sure, but it's November and there's nothing else golf to talk about, except speculation of whether Tiger will actually show up next weekend, what clubs and shoes he's got, or some golf ball at CostCo. My guess is when it comes out some will love it and claim it's legit, some will say it's nice but nothing special, some will despise it and many will be on the BST, same with every other club.

I concur with some of the MOI comments and raised something similar very early in the thread. Clearly the jailbreak does something for ball speeds off the face but I hope that the overall CG is still low and back.

What do you mean "still"? Callaway has never made a low/back driver. All of their clubs are high/front or high/back. Exception being the subzero which is low/front, but they don't have anything low/back

I don't think you can really say Callaway has had high CG clubs in the past either. There's a pretty informative chart on another site that actually measured the CG's of most OEM's recent drivers, and while Callaway didn't have the lowest, they were definitely on the lower end of the spectrum.

this thread has kind of snowballed and become a self fullfilling perpetual motion machine.

A couple of points:

1) Most of the posts are really adding nothing, either they are jokes about the hype and how long the thread is, fairly benign "i'm interested to see this" type stuff, or those jerks going on the upcoming trip flapping their gums

2) Callaway hasn't said anything, and actually only posted to say they were going to punish the guy for leaking pictures....so the hype is mostly from a small handful of people who've hit it and might be meaningless. That's pretty much been established

Basically, this thread is just a bunch of dudes hanging out. It's like Seinfeld. I'm not really sure it's "about" anything right now

Some of us drew pictures. Horrible ones, but still pictures.

I keep thinking about the trampoline effect in the face.

The closest thing I can come up with is hitting a baseball off of a tee with an aluminum bat and with a wiffle ball bat. A stationary object being struck with a moving object. While ball speed is lost over impact and spring of the aluminum bat, much more is lost from the wiffle ball bat.

That's kind of what I'm thinking by minimizing the spring of the face but still having some recoil which is what I think the bars behind the face will provide.

I had a beer tonight, so I'm in deep thought mode.

I mean, "despite" the jail bars at the front.

I'm not comparing it to anything they have previously done though given you've mentioned it, I thought the Fusion was fairly low and back as I imagine some of their ugly triangle drivers were low and back.

In any case, they've never called a driver 'EPIC' before so what they have done in the past isn't necessarily the most reliable indicator of what to expect.

The bars only weigh 6 grams so shouldn't be that big deal as far as MOI.

The whole reason for using carbon fiber is to allow more weight to be moved low and to the rear. Clearly with this club Callaway is attempting to move cog low and to the rear.

The jailbreak technology is not intended to increase COR or CT.

The jailbreak technology works for center and mishits (to suggest it is only for mishits is simply wrong).

The crude sketches showing the clubface deflecting differently with jailbreak are misleading. This is not the intended purpose of the 2 supports.

As mentioned numerous times in this thread, the jailbreak technology is designed to reduce the energy loss that occurs when the crown and bottom of the club distort when a ball is struck.

This is probably the Callaway patent application that applies:
