Saw some new Callaway Woods last night (The Epic Thread)

Believe I saw it mentioned somewhere that there would be multiple color options similar to u-design. Does anyone know if this is the case and if so would it be an up-charge?

I think it'll just be Udesign.

Typically, UDesign is $100 upcharge (from memory).

That's correct. It's always been $100.

Everything in this thread seems to be about additional ball speed. That just means further into the bushes for most of us, or can jailbreak defy the laws of physics too?

Maybe one of the most sensible posts of this thread. Congrats.

Agreed. But in fairness, ball velocity is VITAL. Much more important than SS. The ball coming off the face is a massive determinant in distance because many will not be swinging any faster than they normally do.

This is all good for straight hitters, but my original comment was just that a bad swing is potentially going to get you into more trouble if you go further off line. I play on quite a tight course where it's more important to be accurate.

Agreed. Take some lessons and a positive thinking class, dude.

You're absolutely right I do need some lessons, but I'm a 4 hcp who's been playing for 30 years, so I've seen all these miracle clubs come and go for a long time. If ball speed and spin is controlled for off centre hits I'll be interested, I'm just saying this thing isn't going to cut everyone's handicap by 5 overnight.

No, it won't. But for the people you are talking about, it could put them in areas that they may have 1-2 less clubs into greens when they put a good swing on it (assuming the ball speed is what they say it is). It's also going to not punish them as much when they don't hit the sweet spot, so on swings where they have a good face angle and path, they won't lose as much on off center hits.

If it allows people to swing at 80%, make more consistent contact, and still get out there further than their current driver...it should make them better. This does however require them to subscribe to this logic (along with your comment about shorter shaft).

In most cases the main issue is the space in between golfers ears that causes the most problems. Smooth easy swings will net the best results for most of us. Most people don't realize that they hit it further in a more consistent manner like that.

If you are worried about a club correcting sidespin issues, an FTiq or FTiz could probably help a bit with that. However, the Epic is supposed to have a pretty decent moi from what they were able to do with the carbon and slider. I am excited to hit it, even if it doesn't live up to the hype. It's fun to look forward to something like this.

I play off 4 so have a pretty good idea what I'm talking about. Most agree that a shorter shaft is better for control. This club isn't going to magically hit it straight for those who struggle to keep it in the fairway. Longer just means more trouble for most.

Yes, we really don't want a driver that hits it farther. My 12 yard drives are always in the fairway.

I believe they will offer 2 stock lengths like the Fusion - 44.5 and 45.5. Choose wisely. I find that I don't lose anything good with 44.5, and gain accuracy, more fairways, and center contact, but everyone is different. Not too worried about the Epic at 44.5.

I can possibly see that. With the sliding weight being heavier in the Epic that would be possible.

The epic SZ sounds like it has the 816 weight technology, so another way of getting the weight back to the head after cutting an inch.

Can't wait for the official photos to come out...

I hope this is true, I definitely want 44.5" with a proper swingweight.

Forgive me for jumping in without going through all of these pages. But, you guys are referencing a sub zero version? I'm assuming that is taking the place of the DBD? And, has the been any pictures of this variation? If they're in the thread just let me know and I'll go through all the pages.

I like my M2 just fine. But, I loved the sound and feel of my 815 DBD. I think I'm jumping on the 816 DBD through Cally-preowned. So I'm a little apprehensive about falling in love with a new model. I tell myself no new drivers every winter, it never pans out though.

I also loved the 815, I had the 816 as well but still prefer the 815. I did like the 816 better than my current M1 though.

If I'm wanting a shaft to play in the Epic SZ the way it does when it comes from Titleist or TaylorMade stock, do I need to order it tipped 1" or 0.5"? I believe Callaway is untipped, because everytime I order a Callaway club it feels way too loose.

That rear track will be almost useless

I think it will depend on how heavy that weight is.

Splitting hairs here, but I think the driver would look even better if they left the silver in the middle black like the rest of the head.

Hearing the Epic SZ with the heavy weight in the rear will be higher MOI then GBB Epic. Interesting.

I've had major concerns with Callaway's "fit and finish" so to speak ever since the Apex irons, and that goes for their woods too. Knowing that this driver is going to be $650 Canadian, from that picture it looks like it's going to look like crap after a few rounds, IMO.

I know it's not the only important thing, but as someone who obsesses about cleaning my gear, my M1 still looks "premium" after a season.

Golf season is what only 3 months up there? I kid I kid.

Everyone has said they are glossy so that should hold up a lot better than the matte finish that scratched easily in my opinion.
