Saw some new Callaway Woods last night (The Epic Thread)

I've had major concerns with Callaway's "fit and finish" so to speak ever since the Apex irons, and that goes for their woods too. Knowing that this driver is going to be $650 Canadian, from that picture it looks like it's going to look like crap after a few rounds, IMO.

I know it's not the only important thing, but as someone who obsesses about cleaning my gear, my M1 still looks "premium" after a season.

Golf season is what only 3 months up there? I kid I kid.

Everyone has said they are glossy so that should hold up a lot better than the matte finish that scratched easily in my opinion.

If you are talking about the crown it is pretty much the same as the carbon fiber parts on the bottom and yes kind of glossy vs matte.

Agreed. My last Cally driver was the RFE, you could basically chip the paint off with your finger nail where the top of the face met the crown. I had 2 heads crack and the old adapters used to crack. Hoping the fit and finish is has improved, but I'm with you on this and the SZ's I've been eyeing on the BST you can tell have been minimally hit and the faces show marks down to the silver already.

Hoping to see some address pics of this thing soon!

Hearing the Epic SZ with the heavy weight in the rear will be higher MOI then GBB Epic. Interesting.

If that's from the same source that told you Day was leaving TaylorMade I wouldn't bet my mortgage on it.

Trolling me? Not a good look. Your really not good at this posting thing :o

I never had a problem with the paint work on my old RFE. I did encounter chips on my R11 and some of the paintwork I have seen has put me off the M1/2. In fact it is the main reason I have resisted buying an M2 as everyone I know that hits one seems to love it. I try it and try it and then think about what might happen to the paint....I really hope that the new EPIC and the new Taylormades have good paint quality and then I might be tempted.

I had the RFE, 815, and 816 and never had an issue with paint cracking, chipping, or scratching. When I sold them the crowns still looked mint. I did dent the face on the 815, Callaway replaced it quickly with no questions asked.

On the other hand my M1 has a very visible ridge where the titanium and carbon fiber meet. Performs great, I played today and hit some bombs. My point is, given the number of clubs these companies churn out there are going to be some that are less than perfect.

Also, had anyone ever seen an M1 or M2 without some scratches or scuffs in the clear coat over the carbon fiber? I have had 2 of each (different lofts and shaft combos) and all 4 arrived with scuffs. A buddy of mine has an M2 and it arrived scratched as well.

At my lesson on Wednesday, I mentioned the EPIC to my instructor, who has a Trackman on a range. He said (not exact words): "Oh, yes, we had it in here the other day. About 5 guys put it through the paces, and they all showed 3-4 more mph of ballspeed." My instructor is big on data. There's something there.

Hey Swingman, who do you take lessons from and where? I definitely can't wait to try this driver. I'll take all the free mph i can generate!

How does the 917 stack up against the club?

Personally I couldn't even get the 917 to outperform my old FlyZ+ so I'm betting it won't even hold the Epic'a jockstrap from what my cally guys tell me

Seems Titleist has been behind in the driver market since the 910. That was the last great Titleist driver, IMO.

You mean since 975d.

With a steel shaft.

Mine was only an S300, way back before any of this tour issue nonsense existed.

Everything in this thread seems to be about additional ball speed. That just means further into the bushes for most of us, or can jailbreak defy the laws of physics too?

I would recommend the Fusion for you, sir

You're probably right. The best driver I ever had, in terms of accuracy, was the original steel headed warbird, with the stock firm. This is probably the equivalent of a ladies shaft to most on here, but I regularly hit 10-12 fairways in regulation with that. I was a particular poor wedge player from 80-120 yds, so that was always my achilles heel. Every titanium club I've ever used since just hasn't been as consistent. I think over the years my swing has no doubt degraded due to bigger heads. I probably hit my old persimmon better than some of the current gear, probably due to the shorter shaft.

I actually used the term 'most of us' as a general comment about how most of those on this forum who are constantly striving for more distance should probably focus on accuracy, and improving their swing, otherwise this club will just get you further into trouble, based on the distance claims. A few lessons instead of always getting the latest new thing with 10 different back up shafts might be the better option. A few replies to this comment didn't get that, and one was just rude and completely unnecessary (pot and kettle), so I apologise for not being clearer. To clarify, I'm certainly looking forward to trying this out, but will also try the fusion at some point if it gets me back in the fairway more often.

For what it's worth I thought your original comment was OK.

How does it feel way up there to look down at us mere mortals? Nothing worst than someone who looks down their nose at people.

It is a internet thread -- a place for people to give their opinions and others to agree or disagree.

If you can't take it don't dish it.

Make the Epic thread great again!

First Callaway driver to make it into my bag. Beat my beloved Ping G LS in both distance and accuracy. Fusion is the real deal. I even loved the stock recoil. Play it at 44.25 and tipped .75 inch.

I'll probably be switching to Epic when rep sends me the head, but for now I'm extremely impressed with the Fuzion.

Lol. No worries. Thanks for sharing it too as it answered a few questions I had from the first few pictures surfacing online. Like the two dots on the bottom of the sole near the club face. :o

For the record, my most credible source (tour pro) who tested this club a while back said it's right there with the M1/M2.. both of which were 2-3mph faster than the 917 in average ball speed. All the other reviews posted on here I am taking with less than a grain of salt till I can hit this club myself :)

I agree with you. The reviews are generally excellent, but I think they rarely are of much use for longer hitters (170+ bs). Even fitting carts are tough because they aren't outfitted with the necessary shafts. I haven't bagged a Callaway driver since the Great Big Bertha, although I experimented with an 815 DBD for about a month, and I'm really curious about Callaway's offerings, but, unfortunately, it'll be hard to properly test one.
