AT&T Pebble Beach

I have played many great matches at Pebble, Spy, and MPCC...all great courses. People who think Pebble is ordinary or some holes boring have either only played it on Playstation or shot 100 their first time out. Same goes for Spy. You can always tell when a critic of Spy knows nothing on golf; always the same comment - "after the first 4 holes..." It's like, oh, no ocean view, these holes suck! Ridiculous.

Even on a great weather day, the greens make Pebble a tough and tricky course to get the right approach and make putts. Whip up some wind and/or cold air to mess with your yardages and you are in for a pretty tough day. The pros sometimes make the course look easy when the weather is good because the tour shaves down the fairways and keeps the rough low, so it is a lot of wedges. No such luck for the US Open.

Since everyone loves the first 4 holes of Spy, let's make sure others know there are other holes. #5 is a tough par 3, #6 a long par 4 that makes your approach shot quite difficult. You get a break on #7 if you can keep it straight and should have a good birdie look. #8 is a target tee shot which rewards a short iron in. #9 will drive you to the halfway house for a drink if you miss that green. #10 a great risk/reward hole, same for #11. #12 a nice par 3. Ok, I will give you #13 is a bit boring. #14 another risk/reward par 5. #15 you think you get a break on a very short par 3, until you club yourself wrong. #16 one if the toughest par 4's you will find anywhere. #17 you get a break before you need to gut it out for your last birdie chance on #18. It's a tough track, I see why most people pooh-pooh it, shooting 95 is no fun.

^I don't poo-poo Spy because it's 'tough', I poo-poo it because it's just a typical RTJ course that happens to be cut out of a nice forrest, with a bunch of repetitive holes. Are there really three different holes at 9/13/18 or do they just move it from one location to the next once you're done playing it? ;)

It's a pretty much must hit fairway for your always aerial approach, that's it.

And I don't know what's "risk/reward" about 10? Miss bunker/find fairway, aerial approach. Same with 11. Hit long, go for it in two, hit short play it as a 3 shotter, there is no "risk/reward" there.

I'd much rather play Bayo/Blackhorse if I want a tougher test and also enjoy Poppy.

That's great you enjoy it, we should all enjoy where we play, but trotting out the "too tough" excuse for not liking a course is just as specious an argument as - but the ocean.

The fantasy league that I'm in allows us to only pick a golfer once during the year, which puts me in tough spot. I like DJ to win, but I feel like I should keep him for an event later in the year and go with more of an "off" name. Grace seems like a solid pick, but I was leaning Finau, even with his missed cut last week. Kind of at a loss of who to pick. Ugh

Jason Day unless you want to save him like DJ. Should be a perfect week to use him though. He always finishes top 10 here and with the wet conditions short game is going to be huge and he is great around the greens.

I thought the same there too. I went Lowry. Probably a miss, but hopefully he'll give me a top 15 finish for a decent $ prize and a bump in my rankings. We'll see. I'm trying to save the bigger names for the events where I can pick two golfers or the bigger prize pools.

My fantasy runs the same format. I already used DJ at Sentry. going with Phil. Let's get lotta FEEL for Phil.

Love the course, the format is absolutely terrible.

It, on a small scale, represents the celebrity obsessed culture we live in today. I've never understood the fascination with watching famous people do what the "common folk" do, but the shtick is old. I'm sure it used to be fun before instagram, facebook, twitter, TMZ, etc., but now there is 24/7 access to celebrities if you want it, so I don't see how it's appealing.

I'd much much much rather watch stories like Woodland with Amy at the Waste Management than people who make more money in a half year than most people in their lifetimes showing everyone what the good life is like.

Every year, you can expect the following: Bill Murray trying way too hard and not coming close to being funny; Larry the Cable Guy wearing a cutoff shirt; Chris Berman hitting horrific shots and then being interviewed for 10 minutes; Clint Eastwood in the booth staring off into space without anything to say while Nantz and Faldo attempt to interview him; Alfonso Ribeiro doing the Carlton dance; Joe CEO with the swing of a 30 handicap but Nantz telling us he's a "5"; Ray Romano doing nothing particularly funny or interesting; Bill Belichick off another Superbowl win hacking it out of the bunker while we're told he's a 15 handicap even though he hasn't played in 9 months; endless clips of the "human chain" from the tournament 30 years or whatever ago; Nantz laying it on thick about the beauty of Pebble the entire weekend while McCord ribs Nantz about how great Nantz's house is; Kenny G, etc etc etc.

I really wish that this were just a regular Tour stop; thankfully Sunday they show far less of the celebrities and more of the actual golf. I'll always tune in a little Friday/Saturday to see the course, but it's only watchable for about an hour.

Yes, and TiVo is your friend.

Not that I'm by any means an expert, but judging by how absurdly closed to the target his stance is, I'd think he almost HAS to twirl on the follow through to prevent snapping his left leg in half, especially with longer clubs and faster swings. Then once that has happened and he's entirely off balance the whole body English thing may be exaggerated, though maybe not entirely overly so compared to some other players (I once saw Keegan Bradley lean so far over I couldn't beleive he didn't fall over). Guess only he knows for sure.

Excuse me, I don't mean to correct you but I believe that would be... body Korean.

A bag of left-handed junk.

I have seen him body-Koreaning upon putting.

Damn... there is a lot of negativity on this thread.

Well, truth be told, while I love the course I can no longer tolerate:

1) Bill Murray, Chris Berman, George Lopez, Ray Romano et al.

2) Gary McCord

3) A bunch of corporate gasbags smoozing and congratulating each other, and TV coverage of same

4) Endless shots of golden retrievers fetching driftwood

5) Amateurs who think they are good and we are tuning in to watch them.

I'll see the course again in June, so I may not watch this event.

Hey Hey Hey, leave the Golden’s out of this. They’re just doing their thing on the beach and them and the whales are the best part of the broadcast.

Came here to be negative but everyone else has taken care of it more be. It's an obnoxious event and really the worst of the year for me. I might tune in if it looks interesting on the back 9 on Sunday but otherwise typically give this one a miss.

Welcome to the club! I'm thinking my viewing will be exactly the same, if there is something decent Wednesday, I'll give it a watch but aside from that, my usual Friday night watching golf will be a movie night instead.

Patrick Cantlay WD (illness)

Brian Davis draws into the field and will play with Kelly Slater.

With such a great winter for surf everywhere, I bet Slater's game is rusty..... But He'll still play faster than Cantlay

What's the point of telling random people on the internet you're not watching?

Nothing good to watch golf wise so we need to fill out time doing something.

I'm going for Branden Grace this week. Plays well in burst, low ball flight and the new caddie bump with Wee Man on the bag means he is your winner.

your pick is doin' good ya tartan wearin Scotsman. Does this mean your gonna hang with us this weekend ?
