New Mizuno irons coming - Tour Proto Pics

Recommended Posts

Look I get the frustration. I’m not saying I wouldn’t be frustrated if I were a lefty. But can we move on from all the hate. We get it, the lefties are upset. No matter how many angry posts show up, it’s not going to change what the release is. Let’s talk about what they did release and if it’s not what you wanted, start complaining directly to Mizuno (or the other OEMs that don’t do what you want).

I would kindly invite you to start a separate thread called "Why Mizuno why? Why don't you make all your lines in left hand?" This way, it prevents the the same points being recycled in this thread.

Sort of like a circular reference in Microsoft Excel. It would also be easier for Mizuno to tabulate all the reasons why they should now make more left handed clubs, based on your anecdotal evidence, as opposed to their years of historical manufacturing and sales data. They could then use the thread to underpin their argument when they present to the board on why they're changing their manufacturing philosophy on all new iron lines going forward. A win for the lefties, a win for Mizuno (sell more irons) and win for the people in this thread who are more interested in the clubs that are being made, rather the ones that won't be. Best wishes.

The other site quotes vosh saying that the hmb long irons aren’t more forgiving than mmc, just higher trajectory. They say that one should choose based on desired trajectory and not perceived forgiveness. Thats very interesting to me in choosing a long iron. I specifically want to hit stingers and punch shots when I pull a long iron. I may be better off with the mmc, which is counterintuitive.

In my experience 25-50K per mold for injection molding - multiply that by 8 or9 clubs. When you're talking about metal fabrication I'm sure those toolings are easily 5x or 10x.

You are not alone with the sentiments. I've been asking for this for years and Mizuno came through with flying colors. Better than to be expected. Thank You Mizuno!

Along side it they showed the MB model with the grain flow lines going through the hosel, but only the head had those lines in the HMBs with the hosel being separate. Was in Japanese so maybe they were making another point. Pleased to be wrong, wonder what that illustration was showing.

FYI - typo above.

Just for folks reading this later, the HMB is designed to be higher trajectory. I know you alluded to that in your next few sentences. Not trying to be a jerk, just pointing it out for clarification.

Probably. Do any of the Mizuno staffers play 3-PW in a blade anymore? Koepka Plays JPX. Chris Wood is playing 4-5 in MMC.

Let’s offer the smallest seller(blade) to the smallest segment(left hand). Sounds smart. It’s funny they have all this research, I would love to see sales of the mp18-sc in left hand compared to ap2/p790/i210/apex. Probably got crushed.

Why wouldn’t you offer Koepka’s set to LH? I mean, he’s won four majors. I’d imagine those would sell better than blades. Wonder if Brooks knows Mizuno makes blades. Why would I play a full set of blades if their pros don’t? Again, smallest seller/smallest segment. If I wanted to, I’d play the mp68 or mp32.

It all boils down to the blade being the cheapest to make cause it basically has zero technology and they threw the lefties a bone.

Thanks, fixed it.

Point being that the HMB doesn’t necessarily goes better, farther, straighter. It may not be easier to hit. It goes higher, which might or might not be helpful or desired

I’m thinking 3/4 HMB, 5/6 MMC and 7-pw MB. Just have to figure out shaft setup.

Driver: TaylorMade SIM MAX (10.5 degrees - set to 9.75 and 1.5 degrees open)

Shaft: Aldila Rogue 130 White 70 TX (at 45" and tipped 1")

3-wood: TaylorMade SIM (15 degrees)

Shaft: Aldila Rogue 130 Black 70 TX (at 43" and tipped 1")

UDI: *** Under Construction ***

Irons: TaylorMade P-7MC 4-PW (1 degree upright)

Shaft: Nippon Pro Modus3 Tour 120 X

Wedges: Cleveland RTX Zipcore Tour Rack (Raw) 52.10, 56.12 & 60.12

Shaft: Nippon Pro Modus3 Wedge 125

Putter: Scotty Cameron Newport 2 Mid-Slant (at 34")

Mizuno uses a 3-stage forging process. So, each head requires 3 tools. For an 8-piece set, that’s 24 tools. I’m in the automotive industry and launched many projects with forged components. Parts of similar size cost about $200,000 PER TOOL. So, an 8 piece set would cost minimally $4.8M for just tools. Add to that fixtures and gauges you are approaching $6M before you’ve produced your first part.

So, I can be sympathetic for the lefties, but it truly is economics.

The thing is that Mizuno will likely read this thread. I just want to reiterate the gap between pure blades and JPX919 forged, a club made for mid-handicap golfers. I am right on the edge of being able to play blades and am therefore excited about the SEL. HOWEVER, I understand that the gap between blades and mid handicap borderline game improvement irons is where most “golf nerds” aka people who frequent this site fall. This is why no MMC/jpx tour/hot metal pro (which all fall somewhere between blade and the jpx forged) is frustrating for those here.

In a perfect world, I’d be playing 919 tours. Now I’ll be playing mp20 blades (except the 4 iron). It’s not the end of the world for me but I get why 5-15 handicappers would be mad.

I think the solution is to go to another company. Buy Srixon Z785s or Titleist CB/T100s and support companies who support you.

I started playing these 25’s this spring and love them. But I’m not sure which new ones to try ... I’m super confused because the 919 tours look sick as wellozymb7ka3ece.jpeg

Tough to beat the 919T, surely more forgiving than new blade, and most likely better look at address than other 2 models, but we will know for sure soon.
