New callaway driver “mavrik” (Pics added Page 8)

Recommended Posts

Possibly something to be careful with is that launch monitors can read different heads at different speeds and I have seen some experts post here that head speed is not always an accurate reading on some monitors. A lot of fitters only focus on ballspeed because of this. I wouldn’t put it past the major OEMs to figure out how to game this flaw in the monitors.

That said, I haven’t owned a Callaway driver in a while so am interested this year and it sounds like they addressed the two main issues I had with epic flash: the horrific weld line on the crown and the weird sound.

It really bothers me that Callaway is deceiving everyone with their tour players playing models we don't remotely have easy access to and acting like they’re playing the exact same club I can go to Golf Galaxy and get.

They seem to be the only company that does this anymore, Taylormade was famous for it awhile ago. It just feels dishonest to the consumer, especially when a member at my club walks into me and says "You see that driver Phil is playing?" I'd love to tell them its the Triple-diamond tour only model thats like what you can buy but better but they would all look at me like I had 4 heads.

I count TEN different versions on the USGA conforming list, goodness.

If you believe is Callaway is the only company providing their players with more options than the consumer, you are mistaking. You can walk on to any tour van and find heads of all different weights, CG locations, lofts, etc. While every company might not have as many on the conforming list like Callaway does, I can guarantee you they have options not available to us consumers. This just doesn’t apply to drivers either.

Pro got his Sub Zero head in and I got a round in with him this morning. The orange is a non issue in person, the crown is glossy, and at address we both thought the head looked slightly closed. The sound is an absolute winner, if you didn’t like the Epic Flash’s sound they solved it. Aside from that I wasn’t blown away by the club, the dispersion story I’m reading about wasn’t apparent. Our Pro is a fairway machine and he was struggling with the left side of the course today. Granted his first round and his Epic Flash shaft may not be the right pairing but his initial run wasn’t very positive. I only hit it on 2 holes, not really a sample size, I would have to spend some range time bu nothing in what I say today will have me rushing to the range to put it through the paces.

This is what Callaway’s AI affords them. They can design a face for a specific player and their typical miss. AI advances will be tested on Tour and filter down to retail in some fashion. I love my Triple Diamond. If Callaway’s new Mavrik Triple Diamond is designed for the same player (seeking a neutral to fade flight and is a toe striker miss) with a more efficient face design, I will be a happy camper! If it comes to retail or available as a Tour Issue head via eBay I will be on the hunt.

My Non SZ head I have at the moment looks very square. I also have a SZ on the way, so we will see.

But I agree the orange is a complete non issue at address. The look at address is stellar.

Hit the standard Mavrik today, club looks meh but sounds great. Sits closed at address with a strong resemblance to the standard Epic with a little bit of Rogue. GCQuad numbers were the exact same as the standard Flash, no ball speed increase, spin was fluctuating a little too much for my liking, no difference in dispersion (my miss is left fwiw) but did feel slightly more forgiving, especially towards the bottom, one other thing to note, I was swinging the Mavrik faster than the standard Flash on avg, other than that I regret to inform, I was not very impressed, me and the guys are honestly a little confused with this release from Callaway, seems that they’re just releasing a rebranded Epic Flash with some cotton balls on the inside to keep up with the other OEM’s

Point taken, I am well aware of that, Callaway is just the most obvious about it and they are extremely hard to find for anyone off tour. I get that hot melt, other custom specs for the tour guys is 'tour only' as well, however, at the end of the day it is still the same head we play.

In any case i'm excited to try the new stuff and some of the old stuff on sale because I was initially really liking my ST190 but it is just too fade biased, I cant ever turn it over and I thought it was me and my swing but I hit a TS3 and a couple others and that fade bias started to go away.

I hit the Mavrik for the first time at a Demo Day a couple days ago. Blew me away!! I had an Epic Flash in the bag for a while last season, but I fought the lefts with it and ended up switching back to my G400 Max. I also did not love the sound from the the Flash. From my brief opportunity to hit it the other day, I can tell you that the standard Mavrik fixed both of the problems that I had with the Flash. It sounds WAY better than the Flash and it sits very square at address. This will likely go into my bag as soon as it comes available.

Also, the best thing in the Mavrik line might be the Max fairway wood. I am a scratch player, and I was shocked with the all around performance of the Max fairway. It is a rocket launcher!! Easy to hit off the deck and the tee.

Everything I have read points to the Mavrik and Mavrik SZ to be more forgiving, sound better and a bit longer than EF/EF SZ.

I’m right there with you! Dying for address pics of the standard and SZ models! I guess Callaway only allows early access to their new clubs to people that will respect the NDA they would have to sign.

Sure I’ll just ruin my reputation and career so golfwrx can see a picture of a club that comes out in two week.

Interesting, pro's already sporting it. So how does that work? Is it written into their contracts (If Callaway is their sponsor) that they have to use new clubs (even before) they are released, to gain traction in the public mindset and positive vibes before retail release? Or are they paid a 'bonus' if they do so? I mean, the biggest impact would have to be to see it in the hands of tour pro's before it's even available to the public. Heck, you often see pro's not moving off of wedges for the longest time, where they are in their bag all scratched upt (they look like they've been through hell sometimes) yet, they are jumping onto the newest and greatest drivers as soon as it is available to them.... I'm a thinking it's either $$-inspired or contract-required.

Would we be able to customize the color for this and make it red instead of orange? If so, when does Callaway generally make it an option to customize the colors like you can for the Epic?

depends on the brand and player. Some keep older drivers in the bag for awhile like Phil because he couldn’t get the epic flash to work for him on several tries.

clubs always get in pros hands first and since the mavrik hit the conforming list before the presidents cup it allowed their staff to play it. Also not a bad time to put it in play since there’s no monetary risk of playin bad with it like in a normal tournament.

tiger still has an previous TM release fw in the bag
