It’s a pretty good event so far. I was watching some of the highlights and was surprised at the ball speeds Rory was getting. Seemed much slower than normal.

Damp cold air will do that to distance. He’s losing 6-10 yards because of that compared to a summer day. Maybe Rory is going full bore either because the rough is so penal.

im starting to think the hard swings on driver are affecting his tempo on his irons. If he plays a little smarter he'll get momentum going. his putting has been terrible the last 2 weeks though. Phil always had reserve power and his long swing still provides smooth power. Id like to see what it looks like the next 2 weeks. i feel he'll adjust and do way better

100% with you on that, but I don't think Phil wants to do that for whatever reason. It took Tiger some time to humble himself and back off the driver. Even if Phil did back off it, he'd still have plenty of distance. Last week Phil was what, second in driving distance? He can pound it. The last 5 years Phil's driving distance compared to the rest of the Tour has got better and better, but his strokes gained: off the tee is the worst of his career.

Phil needs to follow Tiger's lead. Play "old man" golf and outsmart the younger guys. Try to drive it straight, use precision iron game, and good putting/chipping to score better than the young bombers.

I don't know if Phil can drive it straight since he's been one of the Tour's most inaccurate drivers for a long time, but he could do a little to drive it straighter. Torrey Pines is not a good course for him, but it's his hometown event. Phil has said he has no chance on courses like this with deep rough.

I agree, which is why I said distance is great. But I wonder if the obsessive pursuit of distance, especially at the amateur level, actually hurts one's game in the long run.

Listen to those in golf media who talk about distance. Hank Haney said distance determines your potential. Hank and Brandel take a crap on most any amateur who thinks they can be good at golf if they aren't long off the tee. We hear the stats from strokes gained fans who say that more distance will bring lower scores overall. But what if amateurs aren't as good out of the rough as pros are? Somebody has to have done a study showing where the distance curve breaks down and you start losing strokes based on your handicap from the rough because it is really hard to be long and straight off the tee.

The SD crowd is showing up in golf form. No one has yelled during a tiger putt thus far. Great tournament though. Everyone should play Torrey. My home course is a gem

As another poster has said, maybe Phil thinks the only way he can win is by trying to hammer drives. He’s not trying to consistently contend, but to win.
