I forgot how good .. older club appreciation

Every year when I purchase what is supposed to be the latest and greatest I do my best to forget how good the old ones were.

I still play a set of 1999 Ben Hogan Apex blades (3-E). I have upgraded the shafts to Nippon Modus Tour 120 stiff and bent the blades 2 degrees stronger, standard lie. In the past couple of years I have tried a couple of current day sets and I still haven't found anything to replace them with. Pretty much everything else are clubs made within the past 5-6 years.

I still have the 99 Hogan blades also. Great sticks. Also, I know they get alot of love on here, but the j40 dpcs are the best I've ever hit. Just got them 3 weeks ago and I don't foresee me changing any time soon. 2 people in my group has hit them and 1 of them already bought a set and the other is looking.

This thread may make me bring back out a set of Ping Rapture J Spec irons I have sitting in my closet. I also almost picked up a set of Ping i5 irons that were super cheap at a local Play it Again sports.

Still play with a r7 TP fw regularly. It's my gold standard. The TS2 I use as my gamer is the only fw in the last 10 years I didn't want to trade for something new. It's really really good and easily a long term gamer.

my holy grail of Irons?I played them through the 90‘s and never found anything near feelwise so i searched almost night and day and found a used set Last year. Player my best round of the year a one under ? Grabbed a set of 710 AP2s here and got to hit them today and they gave me this exact feeling, "I forgot how good these are"... Interesting timing. Keeping them in the bag for now as well as a Cobra LTD black I got here as well. It has beaten out the G410, which I love. Amazing how easy it is to get caught up in the hype of NEWER IS BETTER sometimes.

I still have my Hogan Apex Plus iron set. One of the best at the time. Wish I still had my 1965 Wilson Staff Dynapower iron set.

Great thread, my first set of clubs was the Ping i3 OS and I upgraded to the G25 a few years back. Lately been playing Maltbys bc I wanted to learn how to build my own, but still keep the G25s as back ups.

For me, it’s the LTD Pro. I know it’s not that old, but man it hangs and bests every other driver I throw at it. It just throws out mid-low cuts all day. I find it pretty darn forgiving as well.

I've had a few sets of irons in my adult life but a few winters ago I found these in my dad's basement. I took them out to the range and loved the feel and weight of them. Now they're in my bag full time. Something about these older clubs I just love. My dad bought them in 1986 or 87. They've been regripped since then obviously. I don't see myself taking them out of the bag any time soon.

Seeing those i3’s brought back memories of the first set I ever bought for myself... custom fit knock offs lol. Currently gaming Callaway X-forged from 2006. Haven’t swung anything that knocks them out of he bag.

I still love and often game my retro irons. Tommy Armour 845 Silver Scots, Ping Eye 2 BeCu, Titleist 660mb, Titleist 975J .....no better feeling than beating your buddies with their new jacked (modern) loft irons.

Hate to disagree.. But I still use my original 2003 Taylor RAC LT's... Greatest irons ever made.. IMHO.. And have a brand new backup that I'm breaking out this year ?.. I've you've never used them.. Man.. Sweetest feel ever

Taylor V-Steel. Pic in my profile next to the SIM. It's probably not as long as the SIM but the technology still works the same. Mine is 16.5* and even has the original graphite shaft that I trimmed 1/2". For me it is the best fairway wood ever designed.

This thread makes me wax nostalgic about my old v-steel. Paired with a YS6+ shaft, it was a weapon that took my driver out of the bag in favor of an extra wedge. A friend borrowed (and ruined) it. Grrr....

I still have full Callaway bag that I bring out once in a while:
