I too was rooting for Watson and Nicklaus. Still cant believe Watson only won 2 masters. Guy was right there so many times!! my heart broke for him in 91. he was on 12 within 1 then dunks one in the water makes double then eagles 13 & 15 to tie for the lead and then doubles 18 to miss the playoff with woosnam!! his ups and downs were of a phil caliber

I was 6, so probable doing what 6 year olds do. Unless I was at my dads watching it, I don’t know. I have very little in the way of memories from that time in my life unfortunately. I did not start playing or watching golf until 2004, except for the random Sunday afternoons at my dads house when he watched it instead of us being out fishing or hunting

Sophomore year at the University of Kentucky.

Spent the weekend watching it from my apartment at Greg Page. Shared the apartment with 3 other guys. One was really into golf, and we couldn't believe what was happening. Brings back good memories. Bought my first and only set of decent brand new irons that year, Wilson Staff Fluid Feels (3i to PW), for $200...when that was really, really, really, a lot of money. As a point of reference, tuition back then was $512 per semester, and student tickets to the basketball and football games were free! The irons are now in the attic, and I haven't bought a new set of irons for myself since then.

I had not started to play golf at the time of the 1986 Masters tournament so I was not watching. I do remember watching a few moments of the final round. I remember Tom Kite's missed putt on 18, Greg Norman's approach to the 18th hole and desperate chip, and Jack coming back out after Norman's collapse and everyone cheering like crazy. I had not quite caught the bug but that moment sparked an interest. I did have a subscription to Sports Illustrated and still have the copy of the Masters recap issue that featured Jack on the cover. Reading that article pretty much started to get me interest to play. I went out and purchased my first set of clubs, bag and shoes.

The first golf tournament I distinctly remember watching was at a the bar and grill at a public course in Colorado Springs. I remember an older lady rooting hard for Freddie Couple and I just sat there watching the tournament unfold.

That said, I have watched the video of the final round of the 1986 Masters many times and it's pretty riveting.

I was 10 years old and just getting into golf. I remember a group of my neighbors, my dad and myself were at our golf course in the morning and they were all talking about who was going to win and our neighbor Kirk blurts out...'watch out for Nicklaus' and it was more or less scoffed at.

We played golf and then I got home and caught Nicklaus on TV at either hole #10 or #11 and he won. Even at that age and just getting into the game I knew that this was special. What I always tell people that weren't there for it was just how FUN the experience was when it happened. And that's what got me hooked on golf and that's why Jack Nicklaus is my favorite golfer of all time.

I was on a Navy destroyer in the Mediterranean. We'd wrapped up an action in the Gulf of Sidra off the coast of Libya, and were laid up a few days at Rota, Spain. An engineering assessment determined that one of the propellor shaft strut bearings was damaged. I tagged along for a round of golf with some of the guys, even though I'd not played before. A fellow named Randy shared his bag with me. Being new to all this, I would ask Randy which club I should use for the next shot, but being p*ssed as a pot and that the beer flowed freely, he'd just say, "just pick a club, any f*ing club". Of course, I was horrible, but the course was so beautiful, I felt compelled to get my own bag on returning to the 'States, and learn the game. So, I did.

Thats very cool. Reminds me of another “how I started golf” story. Not mine but shows how golf can be quickly addictive....

My father in law had been playing for years and he was on vacation with another couple somewhere warm. His friend was an ex cop, total character, never touched a club in his life.

My father in law was going to the range at the resort and his friend tagged along and they started hitting balls. After and hour or so, my father in law was ready to leave but his friend was so entranced hitting balls he said he would stay for “a little longer”

Like 3 hours later they were ready for dinner but he didn’t see his friend around, the ladies hadn’t seen him either, and was like, “he can’t still be hitting balls, can he?”

Sure enough, he went to the range and the guy was still hitting balls! Lol

I was also 19! (born in August, 1967). I was playing college baseball at the time and had just picked up golf the previous summer. I watched that entire final round and was riveted to the set.
