Tom Brady's 8 handicap

Is there anyone that thinks that Brady's 8 handicap is in any possibly way legitimate? In the entire match he hit a total of two shots solidly and towards the target. Three if you count the eagle putt. In my opinion there's no chance an 8 handicap this that many fat or that many off the planet never to be seen again.

I was really surprised he didn't have a driver though. That's unusual for single digit.

I think we're so used to seeing pro swings that anytime we see something else we assume the person sucks. 8 isn't THAT good

I'd give him the benefit. His normal rounds probably aren't a) in the rain, b) on TV, c) with 2 of the best players in the world, & d) 100% in accordance with the rules of golf.

He might be a casual 8, but under pressure (as with anybody) he played more like a 15-20.

I believe Peyton and Tom were playing on a course touted to be the preferred training grounds for many PGA Tour pros from just north of 6700 yards (~72.6, 138) in the pouring rain on national TV. He has probably had better days on much easier courses. I think our handicap system is flawed in that people can establish decent handicaps on their home course, especially if it's an easier course, and get absolutely crushed at a more difficult course. In other words, the handicap system doesn't properly account for course difficulty.

Tom Brady probably is very well an 8. Remember, you're only going play to your cap 20% of the time. Tough to play in a situation like that if you're not a pro. Pouring rain with two all time greats. It's a hard game, even for the greatest QB of all time.

Handicap system is better than you think. Course rating and slope rating take into account course difficulty.

Agree with this. An 8 isn’t perfect by any means. You will see some ugly stuff from an 8 handicap. I’m close to an eight right now and I have course moments where I look like a twenty. My friends dad is a 7 and his game isn’t pretty by any means.

I see 8 handicaps blow up like that all the time in tournaments or high-pressure situations. Got to keep in mind that someone like Brady is probably an 8 largely due to his athleticsm and can compensate for a lot of swing flaws when his timing is on. We just got to see what happens to that type of golfer when their timing is off and they get nervous.

Remember if his index is an 8 he’s probably getting 12 at the course they played yesterday. That’s believable, and then throw in the conditions and circumstances...I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Found this image in an old article. It's outdated but I imagine his scores look about the same today.

So yeah, I could see him shooting in the low to mid 80's if he's playing an easier course that he plays repeatedly. Under pressure and at an unfamiliar venue, that means he is likely to shoot in the 90's (as he probably would have yesterday if he completed every hole on his own).

Im not willing to give him a pass for nerves due to being on national TV because he's Tom Brady. If at this point in his life he gets nervous when the cameras are on him, thats kind of a joke. Heck, Im a 15 handicap and after what I saw yesterday, if I played a round against him for a million dollars, by the 7th hole Id be calling the nearest Bentley dealership to tell them what color I wanted my new Continental GT in.

My friend is an 11 and shot 97 his first round back from COVID quarantine. I shot 83 on Saturday and didn't make a par until the 7th hole.

What planet is this where an 8 can't have a terrible round in the pouring rain?

I played in a baseball celebrity tournament with Greg Minton (SF Giant - aka “Moon Man”). He said he could easily pitch in front of thousands but if he had three people watching him putt he was a wreck.

They said he played 18 in the morning and then was running wind sprints in the parking lot. He had the same nervous exhaustion that most people get in big moments.

I'm currently a 5 and will shoot an 87 just as quickly as a 77 on my home course on any given day.

I'll give the guy a pass on the conditions alone. That was no drizzle yesterday; that was a full on Florida downpour. It wasn't always easy to see on TV but some shots, you really saw it. Anyone who's been in one of those knows what I'm talking about. Pretty damn challenging conditions for an AM IMHO.

Troll thread? He hit two solid shots all day. There were multiple holes where he had to hit three off the tee. He chunked the majority of his approaches 30 yards short of the green. You're telling me that if you play in an ABCD and a guy shows up with an 8 and does that you aren't wondering?

Lol you need to watch it again. Holed shot, couple 2 irons off tee and you have three just there. Had couple good three woods off tee including Am. long drive hole. There that's five for you to start with.

At the beginning of the show I think they said Brady/Manning where playing at 6800 yards. There are lots of 8 handicaps who can't effectively play a 6800 yard course.

Between the end of the playoffs last year and signing with tampa bay this year I'm sure practicing golf isn't exactly high on his list of priorities right now. An 8 that hasn't played in a few months isn't going to look great under any circumstances.

Again, yes this is a troll thread. That was a tour sauce shot. Anyone that can hit that can convince me of high single digitS pretty easily. The amount of pros I have heard say they had to play the ball back in stance blah blah when they got nervous. He is no pro, has not practiced that one would assume. playing in those conditions is not easy. I’d expect less of an 8 in some of the tourneys I’ve played in. I’ve seen scratch shoot 92 with a rapid onset of the chunks. And Not in front of Tiger and national television, in the rain, with Phil whispering weird stuff like “tasty morsel” After their shots and Charles Barkley screaming “HEY TOM” in their ear.

Oh. And was not a busy Super Bowl winning quarterback as their day job. I would give that eight handicap a little bit of benefit of the doubt if they said they had an off day

Hard to judge handicap with the weather. I’m sure It would probably add 5 or more to my handicap in the rain. The greens and fairways looked perfect. That’s what I noticed more than anything.
