There are so many great , lightly used golf clubs out there why would anybody buy new

I spent about $400 total for my Taylormade M1 driver, M3 Hybrid and F8 one length irons (6-gap)

I don't fit into any OTR spec equipment 🤷‍♂️

 That would kinda suck ...

It does but because of that I don't plan on buying new irons so often. Just say I keep a set for 5-7 years then buy a new one that's not bad in my books. I could always buy heads cheap then shaft it up but that can be costly as well. There is a point where adjusting old irons costs as much as new irons.

One of the biggest rip offs in golf history goes back a few years. There was a time not too long ago you could get a set of Dynamic Golds for $100. New. Then magically the exact same shaft with tighter quality control and the tour issue shaft labels goes for $400. Sorry but never saw any Value in that.

Within the parameters of new OEM purchase and cost effectiveness 🤔

I think it’s very player dependent. I hit my driver exceptionally well and would hit my 3wood poorly, so I dropped the 3 wood.  So it’s not cost effective for me to own a 3 wood.

I like to play 3-4 hybrids in place of 3-4 irons, so it’s not cost effective for me to buy a full set. I opted to buy my new set (MP-20 HMB 5-PW) instead, knowing that I would score better with a 3-4 hybrid.

I tend to hit moon ball with most 5 woods and every 7 wood, so I opted to go Driver-4wood-3hybrid. A seven wood is better from real dodgy lies than my 3-4 hybrid, but worse off the tee and off the deck. So a 7 wood is not as cost effective for me to own, but it would definitely be more beneficial to most people who could use the help at the top of the bag.

I don’t lack speed (ok so I am middle of the road WRX’er with my 113mph Driver Swing Speed) and I don’t need help with launch. I choose to use specific hybrids that flight like an iron, that are not ball speed monsters, in order to hit yardage numbers. I could flight a 3 iron nice and high, I can shape it both ways, but I’m not hitting it as well consistently out of different dodgy lies as I would a hybrid.

So if I were to buy new OEM clubs, it would be hard to say what would be least cost effective. I’d probably split the difference on the two hybrids at the top of the bag and pick out a TEE EXS PRO at 22* which would leave me with an open slot. I know I would fill it with a U500 at 17*, and it would become the LEAST cost effective club in my bag, if not, then it would just about render a 4 Wood obsolete. Hypothetical, but one of them would be MY least cost effective club in my bag.

The TEE EXS PRO would not be a direct replacement to my Adams 9031’s being that they fly higher, and the face is hotter, so I’d get 1 to replace the two. I couldn’t flight the EXS Pro down as well, so I’d want something that would still put me out there a good ways when hitting into the wind. I can do this with my 20* Adams 9031, not with an EXS pro, so, in comes the Titleist U500.

You can make the argument for what suits you personally, but that would be my take.

In general terms on something that applies to everyone, if I were to go there, it would be what another poster mentioned Tour Issue” X100.

Im sorry, but if you fit into an X100, the “Tour Issue” X100 is a complete waste of money IMHO

Waiting for Obee to join and discuss hybrid value  🙂

I go with 3 wood. Mine is behind the study door and the cobwebs are covering it. Strong 5 wood for the win. I have sorted my bag in such a way that I will hit each club several times per round. The clubs that gets no use joins the 3 wood. (16* hybrid, 4 iron to name a few that are in the bad boy bin at this time).

I understand the 3 wood comments which i made in the OP

I also think @Redjeep83 touched on something i also mentioned briefly and that is that wedges have creeped up in price to the point that they are MORE expensive per club than irons are

So if you have a wedge you don't use for chipping (for me i rarely use my 56) it's actually a terrible value.

So yeah, I just got Adams Idea Tour Prototype Boxer 16* & 20* for less than a dozen "premium" balls and if I barely hit either one, it won't bother me enough to notice.

But I have a feeling I might be hitting both. Guess we will find out in a week.

I realize for a 69 year old WRXer my distances are terrible but I don't carry any fairway woods

I do use a 21 degree M3 hybrid that i can get about 190 out of

My drive is around 240 total and with a 6 iron I can reach the 400 yard par 4s easily

I use the hybrid on par 5s and long par 3s

So for me , fairway woods have no value

I took my 3 wood out and have been holding my 5 wood. But considering the hybrids I just bought, I might not need it for much. But we will see how these work out, first.

If the sole criteria is "uses per round" then sure fairways or hybrids. A mid cap is going to play 50 odd non-putts, so 50÷13 is a smidge under four. Treating a set of 4-P as a single entity, 50÷7 is now 7. So by this logic any club you use less than 7 times in a round is a "bad value"...

In my opinion the worst value is the $300-400 putter because it's a flat piece of metal on the end of a stick that golfers have convinced themselves needs to be milled to be worthy... when it's just a putter. How many more putts per round would you really have with a $34.99 Wilson Harmonized than a Scotty Cameron?

Compared with my likelihood for success with a hybrid (good) vs a 3 iron (bad), and a hybrid doesn't seem that bad. Same with the 60° wedge, yeah it's a one-trick pony, but sometimes you need that pony. The putter is not a tremendously special thing, and it does a rather specific job, but it gets this mystique applied to it that makes people pay through the nose for them.

Gotta love when someone singles out Cameron when it comes to putting down expensive putters.

$450 Toulan

$450 Sik

$350 TM Spider

$400 Bettinardi

If anything, out of these the Cameron is the best option as it will retain the most value if you choose to sell.

I doubt (m)any LPGA players would agree with the hybrid assessment 🙃

Depends on the course and what/how you hit. My F9 3H is kinda magic - fairway, divot, rough, just seems to work. I don’t hit the 3W much but I like it. So I keep it. Truth be told I could probably drop every other iron and be fine, just hit partial swings. But I am nuts so ymmv.

I agree with the high end courses and hybrid comments. Hybrids are £250 now in the UK and, unless you’re a shorter hitter or at a longer course, I don’t see many people use a hybrid often. Same with high end courses. I enjoy playing some of the nice courses in the UK as a one off, but there are plenty of nicer courses for reasonable money as my regular track. I know several, terrible golfers, who must play the most expensive and toughest courses all the time and then they complain about their game being rubbish. They are getting value per shot though!

I do disagree with putters. You use your putter 28 plus times a round, in most cases 36 plus. So if you want to treat yourself to an expensive putter go for it, as the cost per use will lower very quickly compared to that £3/400 three wood or driver. Putting is also dead easy to practice anywhere. I’m more likely to hesitate spending £400 on a driver I might use 9 times a round over a putter I’ll use every hole.
