Saw this article and immediately said “ hmm.  That explains a lot “.

I don’t have time to comment more at the moment. But will later.

Saw that there are 2 players on the pga tour on the spectrum but won’t come out. My guess bubba Watson, the other one I’m not sure.

If we're loosening what is considered autism...gotta be cantlay.

I need to understand more of why mayfair is considered autistic. I've seen extreme autism cases and mayfair is nowhere near those folks who can't function. Is autism being expanded to be any sort of abnormal brain/stimuli processing?

Apparently, autism is the most severe of conditions known as autism spectrum disorders.  The article says he has autism but I suspect the reporter got it wrong and Mayfair has Asperger's.  I went to college with a guy who I am convinced has Asperger syndrome.  He ended up becoming a successful neurologist.

Is his condition tied to his horrific rep for blatant cheating ?

I just finished reading for an hour on his double penalty DQ , and I can’t honestly see why he’d be called a cheater.  But. I’m not saying  he isn’t.

what I read is that he took 4

min 50 seconds to find his ball.   Rule had changed to 3 min before that event.  They didn’t catch it at the time. A volunteer callled in later.  Officials found the footage and timed it.

the. the ball in the rough by the green. He puts his wedge into the grass and  it moves.  And he’s now  saying that  he didn’t communicate what he did or didn’t do properly when asked.  Looks to me like an unfortunate comedy of errors vs cheating.  But , be maybe deserving of the label from the past.  I haven’t been around long enough to know.

But it’s a very curious deal to me.  I find communication the absolute hardest thing at times.  And his comments in this article about the rushing flood of thought is something I know about all too well.

In the original SI article, Mayfair said he was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, not "autism." The author, Stephanie Apstein then stated that the diagnosis resembles Asperger's. I would assume she was basing that on knowledge from experts.

Point being, Mayfair shared the diagnosis correctly and either Editors are putting in headlines or different authors are incorrectly representing it.

Autism comes in many forms.  If players don't feel comfortable discussing their health issues that's their right and I respect that.

Absolutely.  But I do applaud those that do. But I don’t expect it.  And am not sure if I would either.

I’ve read a lot on the subject. And yet to see how what when where adults can be tested.  It caught my eye most because his new wife pushed him to be tested.  So it is doable .

Lol. That ^. Prime example of me saying something and it being taken for opposite.

***not an attack***

I meant that it explained a lot to me.  Why he is so maligned by other players and not liked etc.  I’m identifying with it. Not judging it.

While certainly your use of the phrase prompted my reply -- I didn't think you were attacking him at all.  Sorry if I gave that impression. I didn't take your comment as opposite, I don't think.

Ok. No worries.  I just wanted to be clear. I don’t start threads often.  And I didn’t start this one to bash the guy.  I started it because it’s a topic I’m very interested in.

Autism had one basic diagnosis for the longest time, in children.  And as you use the word, it showed itself as extreme.  Degrees of Autism or identifying characteristics in adults (ASD) were not considered.  Many clinical professionals still think that way.

But today I think many clinical professionals are taking a more open approach to conditions.  ASD is still measured much the same with adults as with children only some are seeing degrees of behavior.  Developmental monitoring, lifestyle review and screening leads to identification in adults.  I am quite close to this topic but won't go into it.

It seems like anyone who acts a bit “off” is diagnosed as “on the spectrum” now. I’ve met and played golf with Billy Mayfair. This surprises me to say the least.

I understand there are degrees but my nephew has autism and there’s no way he could golf but he is a very extreme case as well

No, the reputation goes way back.  His nickname was Will He Play Fair way back when.  Goes way beyond the incident you refer.  I'm pretty sure he had the label long before he won in LA in 98.

What I do find interesting, and this is amateur psychologist who stayed at a holiday inn express last night, but my understanding of autism(which may or may not apply on the spectrum), is things are very black and white in the minds of one with autism.  Which makes me wonder if  his reputation came from the fact with so many decisions, exceptions, etc., he wasn't able to process things quickly enough for a competitive golfer,  and it wasn't as premeditated as some might say of some others.  The "explains a lot" may be applicable here if that is true?

Hopefully he gets whatever treatment needed for a normal life.

No one cares in this day and age.  There's bigger problems to deal with in these pandemic times.

10.5 deg Titleist 905R with stock UST Proforce V2 Shaft (Stiff flex)
