What makes the Spider X so popular?

I actually just picked up one today to add to the stable. Picked up the newer Hydro Blast version. Puts a great roll on the ball, and feels pretty good. I’m not a fan of overly soft putters, this one is softer than I’d normally like but it still feels dense. I’m going to experiment with claw grip for a little while, so I have a SuperStroke Claw grip on the way for it. Should have it in play by the weekend.

Hey guys,

Just looking at opinions of what makes the TM Spider X such a popular putter?

Seems a ton of amateurs and tour players just keep picking it up. I feel like I see somebody new on tour every single week playing one.

What are your thoughts on what makes it so popular?

Same here. I only use mine on slow greens when I need that hot face, but my regular gamer is an ER2.

I was actually looking into the ER2 but they didnt have a lefty demo to roll. I hit a few right handed but obviously didnt help me much. Hows the feel?

Hah, that’s pretty funny because I had to demo a left handed model because there weren’t any righties left.

It makes a nice “ting” sound when you hit it pure that some people apparently don’t like. Personally, I like the feedback. For a milled face, it still feels pretty soft while providing good feedback on mishits. The Gravity Grip is my favorite feature, though. It really helps keep the hands square through impact and makes the putter face balanced.

You can't make this stuff up!!

I will say I was thrown off my the sound and feel, but a couple felt great so I assumed the bad ones were just severe mishits. I'm still pretty intrigued, so will have to hunt down a lefty

The Spider EX is my first real go with a mallet putter, coming from milled blades. For some reason I click with the Spider and not really sure why. It fits my eye well and I do solid on distance since I'm not so focused on putting a good stroke on it. I think it's just that it works for me and I feel good about it. I roll a BB8 Wide at home all the time and still love a great blade style putter though.

Their marketing is definitely strong, but these things are the real deal. The putter isn't something a tour player is easily convinced to throw in their bag.

For a couple mill in sponsorship dollars I’m sure many can be persuaded.   Guaranteed every single pro has a room full of old putters... you think one of those wouldn’t hole putts like their shiny spider?  They can shoot in the 60’s putting with a 3 wood.

You made a lot of assumptions there 😆 Of course they have a lot of putters, and yes they are incredible players. They also have a wide selection they can choose from any given day. Look at Rory who has gone away from the spider and returns. Winning is more important to a lot of their staff than playing what might bring a bonus.

Obviously TM has strong marketing, but they have even stronger R&D. The putter won't work for everyone, but it's a great putter that I think people should consider.

I have a Spider X. And I assure you that I still suck at putting. There’s nothing magical about it.

However, it does give me validation because so many pros were playing it. Rory, Rahm, Jin Young Ko … etc.

I was watching a college tournament a few months ago. It looks like half of the field were using Spider X.

For me, I like the feel of a blade (blades to me feel light) and its better distance control.  However, I am more accurate with a mallet, but less better at distance control with one (because they feel heavy).  To me, the spider X feels like the right combination of the two.  I have good distance control with it, because while it is a mallet, it isn't too malletey (i.e., heavy).  While it is not a blade, it is kind of bladey.  Also off the rack, it aimed exactly to my target, which is rare for me.  I almost always have to do some bending or other tricking around to have a putter aim correctly for me.  The closest competitor to it for me was a ping arna with heavy modification to get it right or a ping heppler tomcat 14 with only a small modification to get it right.

I don't get it. I just bought my first "mallet" putter, but it's still half the size of the Spider.

I'm back and forth on mine. Its so good from in tight, but I really struggle with it from distance.

I had the same issue and then I started doing a lot of speed training with my putting.

It made a WORLD of difference.

Right now, I can’t see anything getting my Spider SR Single Bend out of my bag. (I will be giving my Evnroll Midlock a fighting chance however.

These are the stats in my rounds from DECADE relative to other peer groups.
