I don't know if the CB's Fowler is playing has been discussed(how do you search a specific thread??) but it appears his "new" irons are the 2017 King Forged CB with a MPF of 398, which is close to some straight solid blades I've seen. This isn't at all GI but would be somewhat easier to hit that his other blades and is a lot less than many other forged CB's I've seen.

Yes, earlier in this thread I speculated that Rickie grew tired of Cobra employees, other players, caddies etc... looking at his bag of muscle back blades and shaking their heads or rolling their eyes.

You better not ever play blades....... or feel the wrath of all them head shakers, eye rollers and toe tappers the shire has to offer

Now, come on.  I only tap my toes and roll my eyes after you blade your blade over the green and spend 15 minutes looking for your ball.  🙂

I was on the course the other day and a younger kid joined me on the first tee. I have seen him around the club and know he is a solid golfer.

On the 8th hole after he blows up with a few doubles he starts taking jabs as I am playing pretty good that day. I push my drive into the left rough and its not sitting very well, ball well above my feet and he then throws in the " playing blades huh? that is pretty brave" as I grab my 6 iron and proceed to absolutely stripe it to a back left pin leaving me a 5 foot putt on one of the hardest approach shots on the course.

Nothing was said after but good shot lol.

Never realized there was a debate over removing the band of a cigar before smoking it.

But don't smoke it with the cellophane wrapper still on...

...I won't make that mistake--twice.

I was at a wedding back in '19 and saw a dude smoking a cigar with not only the band still on it, but the cedar sleeve!! Damn thing would flame up every now and then and he'd shake it out. LMAO!!

I have seen more than my fair share of "  WTF MOMENTS ", of golf shots from guys playing all sorts of irons  other than blades.

Not exclusive, to style of irons,

Maybe , " Game Shaming ", or "Hack Shaming" ,  should be the next big thing on  golf courses.

I don't think this is a thing. I certainly don't see it having anything to do with Fowler's change specifically.

You must be a lefty.  That's a great and brave shot to hit a draw with a 6 iron (and a blade 6 iron, at that) out of the heavy rough to a back left pin.  Very little margin of error on that type of shot.  Congrats!

I can very much confirm that blade shaming exists.

I just don't care. I'm a mid-handicapper that uses blades. I'm solid with my irons - that's the best part of my game. I switched at a relatively high handicap (probably 25 or so) and I went from an ultra cavity back game improvement iron (Cobra F-Max Draw Weighted Irons) into blades with no cavity whatsoever. Within 3 rounds, I'd shot my best round of my life (93 at the time). I switch up my irons every so often but I always go back to my blades because that's what I play best with.

People who have never played golf with me usually are the ones who "blade-shame" me. But give me one day out on the course and I promise you, you'll see that they're the right irons for me.

“Blade Shaming” is definitely a thing. But I also think there are a lot of golfers out there playing clubs that might be a little unforgiving for their skill level. Now if you are on Tour, play what works best for you with no shame. If you are an amateur who thinks you are scratch but never breaks 78 from 6400 yards and you are playing blades.... good for you but you definitely aren’t helping yourself. Golf is a game of misses. Why make your misses bigger if you don’t have to?

Very true theory, though I do think even though they are frustration playing blades for a while can be somewhat of a training aid. I mean it’s not gonna totally change your swing, but if you have to try to find the center than blades could be good for helping your strike become more consistent. But you can also play something in between, like me I play the mizuno mp-18 SC irons (split cavity) they offer a decent amount of forgiveness, but your not gonna completely get away with a bad strike, it will still slightly punish you. But I love them because they force me to be, well, a half decent ball striker.

In recent years my observation is that golf equipment company employees are the most ardent at shaming anybody who plays (or wants to play) a set of muscle back blade irons. Specifically, employees learn about the product lines from the company's design engineers, and the design engineers hang their hats on computer generated MOI numbers. So, at Callaway, Ping, Titleist, Mizuno etc... employees have the opinion that their company's single muscle back blade offering is little more than a nostalgic nod to yesteryear.

Consequently, scratch index players who work for these companies are made to feel ashamed if they dare bag a set of muscle back irons. Even Tour pros on staff, if they miss a few cuts in a row, are encouraged to try the company's larger head "more forgiving" models.

How fragile are you if you let some random person's opinion dictate what type of clubs you play with?

I play them because I like the way they look, and most of all how they feel. I'm fully aware that they may cost me a stroke or two every once in a while.. but I play to enjoy myself, and that type of club is more enjoyable to me than shooting two strokes lower. Simple as that.

For people like Brooks and Fowler, those one or two strokes could be the difference between making a cut or not.. or even lifting a major trophy, so it's a different situation for them. For hacks like us - realistically nothing changes if we shoot a 76 or a 77

What hack shoots a 76? Damn your definition is pretty strict!

Same goes for playing from the tips, it's always awkward to have not played in awhile and be rusty but have always played from the tips and you play with strangers and any bad shot off the tee they're thinking he has no business playing the tips or those blades irons... they assume you think you're a pro if you dont play giant cavity backs with graphite shafts from the white tees.

I play blades, average 290+ with my driver and only ever putt with my bullseye. It creates what I term an "aura of awesomeness" and am aware I'm the talk of the club.

I also play off a 26.8 'cap.

I play blades with a Wilson 8802 putter. All I need now is suspenders and an old fashioned mustache

Lol's, exactly.

Hah fine! I didn't mean to belittle anyone's accomplishments or trample on any toes with it, it was just an off the cuff comment.

Do note though that I said that in the same paragraph and context as I mentioned Brooks and Fowler.. I guess the juxtaposition in my mind brought me to "hack".

I manage a 76 here or there on occasion, but next to those fellas I'd certainly feel like a hack.

Yup - it's all a matter of perspective. While I also shoot rounds in the 70s at a decent clip, I'm not really all that close to being scratch. Certainly can't compete for the win in any meaningful gross score tournament (and have about zero interest in net/handicapped tournaments).  Sure, I can beat most of my buddies most of the time, but I think I'm still deep in the ranks of recreational golf. I just work at it a bit more than the average player does. I think of myself more of a hack than any sort of accomplished golfer. Maybe "somewhat better than average hack" is how I'd think of my game.
