Playing Music While Golfing

Should music be banned on the golf course?

To me its a courtesy thing.  If you're the type that must listen to music while playing be considerate of others with the volume.  No different than talking while someone is hitting.  I remember as a kid when I took lessons the one thing the pro instilled into me was "be invisible on the course to other golfers".

I wonder if this trend continues what the etiquette is if two (or more) golfers are paired and they all have music of different genres.  😋

I'd be interested to see the age demographics for who voted that music should or should not be allowed on the course.

I voted "No Music" and I am in the over 45 crowd. I'm guessing most of the "No Music" folks  are over 40 and most of "Yes Music" folks are under 40.

61, and my vote's a soft 'no'.

Played in a member/guest at a high end club here last weekend and 75% of the groups had a speaker in their cart, including the old farts.  Everyone in the top flight, including half a dozen + hcps, had one too.  Of all the doctors and lawyers and businessmen I played with, or spoke to, there were ZERO complaints about music.

Times are changing gents.  Deal with it.

I'm not a fan but some of the guys I play with listen to music every round.  They do ask if it's cool and offer to turn it down if it's too loud so

I roll with it.....unless it's during a tournament.

There ya go…..that is typical response of music on the course guys as was your next post.  Who cares what others want as long as you get yours….

Yes, the individualism at all costs seems to have overpowered all sense of community. It’s sad to see in so many ways how people don’t understand the simple concept that “my right to swing my fists ends at your nose.”
Playing a game where you call penalties on yourself should instill a basic sense of civility. @cristphotosaid it best on the thread that they were taught to be “invisible to the other golfers.” What a great lesson to take out into a world that can’t be bothered to wear masks for the benefit others.

C'mon man, playing music on the golf course is NOT "basic uncivility."  Some people like it.  Some people don't.

If you like music, ask your playing partners if it's OK to play it. And don't play it so loud to annoy golfers in other groups.

It's like one group always wants to be offended and put out. Another wants there to be no limits (Like to color TV and "gramps" guys in this thread). So then we get these stupid debates on whether there need to be "rules" and that there's one way to play golf, one wardrobe to wear, one blah blah blah. Live and let live. Let others enjoy the game, too.

Music doesn't bother me. I wear earbuds at the range when I practice and if I am walking I have a JBL clip on my bag and will play music lightly. I try to keep others in mind with the volume and always ask if bothers people and they say they barely notice it. I rarely do music in the cart unless I am with buddies and we are drinking and it's more of a social thing

I used to practice a lot with headphones in and I noticed it crept into my solo early am rounds; super low volume, no one else to even bother basically on the whole course and it seemed to help a little with relaxation and my tempo.

I then had a buddy (duffer) who I played league with, he cranked classic rock so you could easily hear it on the tee box or adjacent fairway, and no one said a thing... the real eye-opener for me was a 3-day private resort trip with my 72 year old boss - who was listening to Merle Haggard Pandora (at a reasonable volume) the whole trip.

I think it's a sign of the times... back in the day we used to have pick up basketball games and and all you could hear was sneakers squeaking, the ball bouncing and some trash talk.. now music is a given. Bluetooth has made it more accessible and "better quality", and you have a much broader demographic playing the game these days, both public and private.

As long as it's a respectable volume and it's not in a tournament setting I see nothing wrong with it, but I will judge you for your taste in music.

If you want to listen to music buy earphones. It’s really not difficult to find even a pair of reasonably priced earphones that will stay in place whilst you play. I do it sometimes, other times, I like to just head for the walk and listen to everything around me. Never felt the need to blast music for everyone else to hear.

You’re right- I’m probably taking the general breakdown in our civic society too far by applying it to music on the golf course.
But the people who blast music or don’t ask if it’s ok to play music are malignant narcissists…

I play music when I play in my usual group in the mornings

I make sure the music is not loud enough to travel further than the cart I am in

I also listen to podcast when I am walking during the week, but I am by myself when that is happening

Music doesn't bother me as long as it is not too loud and is not country music

Country music is the scourge of the Earth

I use a small Bose all weather speaker on the course for 2 years now. I keep it low while I'm walking or riding. I turn it on after we tee off the first hole. No I never ask if its ok, I'm respectful of the other people I'm with. I was at Streamsong Resort a few months ago and this group was playing music so loud you could hear it across the fairway on the next hole.

I do two things that might affect others, I enjoy cigars and I enjoy listening to music during a round (usually mellow 70's for a nice easy rhythm); on the 1st tee I ask those I have not played with before (if any) if either bothers them.  99.9% they (1) enjoy smell of cigar and (2) don't mind music.  If they state a preference, I don't do it.  Its not that hard.  BTW, I don't play music so loud that those outside of my foursome can hear it.

Nice. Nothing like Disco Duck, Muskrat Love, Feelings and Billy Don’t Be A Hero to get my swing in sync.

I don't listen to the radio when I drive in my car.

I hardly listen to music on my phone.  When I do, it's with earbuds.

I just don't see why I have to hear YOUR noise during MY round of golf.

Jeez, show some manners.

Yes!!!

If you need to listen to music while playing golf, wear earbuds and keep the melodies to yourself. It’s called BEING COURTEOUS TO OTHERS.

If I'm playing with friends, I usually do cause I know they don't mind.  If I get paired up or something, I won't unless they are already playing music.

I actually think I play better with music on.  It's almost like the white noise machine I use at bedtime.  It kinda calms me.
