Which SMALL Company Makes the Best Wedges?

I'd vote edel, but haven't tried their new ones yet.  I'm sure I'll like them.

Definitely sharp leading edge, but when you learn to use the bounce with them...should be fine.  Literally never hit out of any lie I couldn't get them through.  I've even gone under a ball on a tight lie...my mistake of course but once you find the right setup they are money.

Your own or a decent fitter's appraisal followed by the purchase of some Nike VR wedges from eBay would work as a markedly cheaper plan B.

I know you said Artisans are out.

When you are able, put them at the top of your list.  I stand by what every other Artisan poster has put in this thread.  The Artisan wedges in my bag are simply the best clubs I have ever hit/played/skulled/chunked/dunked in my 45 years of playing golf.  I get chills when I get to play any wedge shots during a round.  Sometimes on a really good GIR day, I think "I haven't played enough wedges today..."

It's not raining, so I will be playing after lunch today.

The 52 is my main wedge usually, the 48 is a gap wedge for the Takomo 101's.

That's a good tip that Artisan will blast the face for free.  I was trying to reconcile the idea that if you play/practice a lot, then shouldn't you be replacing wedges every year?  That can get pricey going the custom route every year with a boutique shop.  Not that I wouldn't do that ! 😉

If you like the classic shapes and a rounded leading edge, check out the 2022 New Levels. The video on their site with Champions Tour winner Steven Alker is great — he talks about how he prefers the rounded leading edges (the opposite of many wrxers!) for aiming versatility over the straight edges that have mostly taken over. I am definitely getting a 54.

The other two I am looking at are the Fourteen RM4 and the Edison wedges that are flying a little under the radar.

I kind of want to take a flyer on one of the sets of blanks to play around with.

https://ca.haywoodgolf.com/products/signature-wedges

Second would be if I order a set of the new Haywood CB/MB's, I would likely do a set of the wedges then.  I already have one of their putter heads that will get shafted if I can find a UST frequency filter shaft (always wanted to try one out).  Then I would have irons, wedges and a putter from them.

Corey Paul has 2 lines of wedges.  One with Japan forgings and the other China forgings.

A friend plays the Japan forging line and likes it but Corey's grind for his set at least has a shaper leading edge which took my friend some time to get used to.

I'd go with Artisan or JP. Artisan has a lot of different grind options.  JP's camber design is something else.

I have a set - the Artisans are best because they personally fit you for 2-2.5 hrs. and then you pick the finishes to your wedges. And you have a blueprint to what really fits you. I also have Ping Glide Forged Pro with custom grinds and Mizuno T22 Wedges and Grinds based on my Artisan fitting. Not an exact fit, Artisans are better but it is close. When the Artisans are worn, I'll get replacements. I need to ask them for a Bandon lob wedge but my normal wedge is already fairly low bounce - 7-8 degrees. I love the beveled leading edge.

What’s wrong with the wedges made by the big companies?

You don't know what really fits you. I was even fit by Titleist twice for Vokey and while they were okay, nothing beats the Artisan fitting. It's a short game lesson and fitting for a bargain price, but you do pay for the wedges. But they fit. You know they will work.

I ended up going with a combo of Edel SMS wedges (54T, 58C) and a New Level M Type (50). There is no sharp leading edge on the new Edel wedges. They are easy to self-fit with the moveable weights, and it makes a noticeable difference. The NL M Type is simply a highly versatile gap wedge.

Curious do they charge for the fitting or is that rolled into the price of the wedge?

Absolutely love my Miura wedges, but I got a great deal on a brand new older set.  Looking at Geom, Haywood or Sub70 as eventual replacements, but all of these Artisan comments have me thinking that may be a fun summer trip.

Edel is pretty good although they have a very sharp leading edge that I wish they would smooth out a good amount. Great for short game but a full wedge shot or even a flighted one is a bit tricky with them.

I have to highly disagree they have a straight leading edge but to say they have a sharp leading edge is misleading. I have been playing golf for 36 years and the Edel SMS wedges are the best I have played ever.
