Morning vs Twilight golf

Dr.Zevia

Recommended Posts

For me, nothing beats twilight golf in the summer. My dad is a morning person and would play at 6am if he could - I took him out for a twilight round last summer and he finally understood  why I loved playing at night. To me, it’s just magical. Especially because our summers here in Buffalo don’t last long enough.

Used to be mornings for me. Once I moved back to my home town things have changed and twilight is now my go to. Could be because there is an incredible amount of retirees here and finding a tee time before noon is borderline impossible. I found I shoot way better scores playing twilight as well. Morning rounds for me I used to need 2-4 “warm up” holes even after hitting the range. The feeling of having to rush my warm up for those early tee times probably has something to do with it.

Been playing both for a while..

We have a group that have  first Tee on Saturday Morning (6:30 am -7) and I also Play in a league on Tuesdays after work..

Advantage for morning play..

Play fast, no delays, you have rest of days after golf (Usually done around 10-10:30).  Playing in cool morning to avoid summer heat.

Disadvantage

Make sure to wear waterproof shoes, because It's always wet  on first 9 (because of dew)

You have to get up super early to play (you have to be a morning person for this, which I am not)

Full day of waste:  Because you wake up so early, when you are done with golf, all you want to do is sleep or do nothing.

I do like golfing in the afternoon, even though it's slower and hotter in summer..

Going to cut down on morning golf..

Twilight, the course where I'm a member is mostly deserted after 6pm and in summer we can play till 2200. love the feeling in the air of the temperature coming down after a warm sunny day and the fact that theres no dew on greens or fairways :). If I was in a working situation I would much prefer to get in 9 holes at 6am or so in summer, just to have something accomplished already before the day starts.

Mornings, but not too early.  Usually go out around 8 or 830am on Saturdays, excellent way to get the day started.  Course is in ideal shape, greens roll true, not too hot, but starts warming up nicely after a couple holes.  I've gotta make sure to hit the range first though, I'm useless without about 25 warmup shots.

Plus, mornings you've usually got the better golfers, and/or retirees in carts, so the round just flies by.  Twilight brings out the casuals, and before you know it, it's taking 2h to finish 9

Definitely a both from me, but prefer twilight. I usually only play 9 holes so it doesn't matter much to me. When I do play 18 it is in the morning, it allows me to be available for the family. I do score better in twilight rounds, I'm not really a morning person.

My dad and I often try to get the last tee time of the day at our home course, it's just more fun for us. We play fast enough that we don't have to worry about the light, and having nobody behind us allows me to play without worrying about pace.

I actually like both, but most of my rounds are twilight rounds during the summer. My wife and I are both teachers so I have summers off, but with 4 kids I still have a lot of responsibilities. I am a morning person and would love to tee it up early in the morning, but I usually let my wife sleep in and then will take our 2 oldest out in the afternoon for as many holes as we can play before it's too dark to see. I catch some great sunsets this way.

I love morning golf, less grief... and it's a perfect way to start the day

Twilight rounds are nice too...

But IMO you can't beat an early morning

  • 2 months later...

We've worked our way up to 3rd off the box every Sunday morning....fresh cut greens, 3 to 3.5 hour rounds, and home before about 11am depending on the time of year.

Twilight is beautiful to play in, especially late...on occasion I'll go out in summer around 630pm, usually get super twilight rate, play 2 or 3 balls a hole until dark.

Other than occasional frost delays, I prefer mornings, especially in summer.

One added benefit of early morning golf, at least at our course, are the deer, turkeys, occasional coyotes and bobcats running around.

Always morning, before it get's way to hot

... In Phoenix most like to play early before it gets too hot especially in the summer. But I would rather play when it is getting cooler as I finish playing, not hotter. I finish with the sun is setting and it feels like the temps drop 20*, even though it is more like 5*. Thankfully not everyone agrees or I would never get a twilite tee time!

Twilight rounds in Florida during the summer after an afternoon storm. Nothing better.

I honestly can't even remember that last time I had a morning round before 11am other than when I played tournaments in high school...

Twilight for me. And it ain't even close.

The last three hours of daylight in the day is always the best time for golf for me. The first three hours of daylight are generally the worst. And pretty much on a sliding scale in between those extremes.

My brain is probably at its peak efficiency an two hour or two after I get up in the morning. So mornings are a great time to get thinking-type tasks done.

But my body doesn't even seem to wake up until mid-late morning and my physical peak efficiency is probably somewhere around Noon or a little after.

The only problem with twilight golf in summer is it ends so late I tend to have trouble falling asleep just a couple hours later. But twilight golf during shoulder seasons in April/May and again in September/October is just wonderful.

I'm retired, so I have more options.

Morning golf better in hot weather, play with a group that can get Senior rate for $25 a person (cart included).

I like twilight golf a couple of times a month if the tee sheets appear open. That way, I can practice that headache shot that can appear on most holes.

Aesthetically, I love to play when the sun is rising, and when the sun is setting. Both are drop dead beautiful (despite the long shadows that make it a b**** to putt). So far as golfing? It is all about temp. I live in the NE. Early spring, late fall, go out at noon - one. 7AM it is 40* - just not that fun to play with my fingers frozen. But today, went out at 1:30, was 92* (real feel 96* @ 4PM). Drenched in sweat. Also not fun.

Going out early tomorrow with some buds. Will be 70s, finish at noonish in the high 80s (will be 94* @ 3 PM - seriously want to be in my air conditioned house watching the finals of the PGA by then). Know my game well enough to know that I can play my best golf @ <50* and >90*. It is an outdoor sport. Have played in ridiculous, harsh conditions. Also know that my best golf is 60* - 85* weather.

So, to me, not really about what morning or afternoon is, more like what the environmental conditions are.

Yes.

And also because even on days with little dew, the course irrigation runs overnight and soaks everything thoroughly. Often the irrigation finishes just an hour or two before you tee off.

Aside from my body functioning better later in the day, for me playing in dry conditions trumps almost everything else. Walking is easier, not being wet from the ankles down fells better, contact with the ball on firm turf feels better, you get extra distance from roll on drives and having to judge the bounce and roll of the ball is a huge part of golf.

I thought I was a morning guy.  Get the round over with and still complete all the things I needed to.  Fact is I never did any of those things though because the round usually wipes me out.  I seem to play better in the afternoon after hanging out with my family all day or doing some chores.

My body takes a while to get loose.

Morning golf requires pre round hot shower, icy hot on the lower back, and a lot of stretching.

Afternoon golf requires showing up.

I hate wet greens and fairways too.
